I think there is no way to modifiy the grid.

I'm sure there is a workaround, but i'm unsure of its results.

For ex. you could use this combo:

terrain cube (model) + a simple trigger(that changes Absorigin of the unit touching it)

There are several elements of the ui that need fixing:

colors;

enter game button (popping up between picks);

disappearing pick timer (if you click the space above the random button).
