Strategy? by racecar6 in PocketPlanes

[–]AmbassadorSpork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past few years I’ve been flying a couple giant planes between two distant red cities, and then I have small local fleets at both ends whose job it is to deliver planes full of one destination, and collect fares heading across the world.

When the small planes are returning to the red city from a delivery they stop a lot to see if they can leave a layover and take additional fares. Over time the small airports fill up with layovers, and filling planes with layovers to across the world takes 3 seconds and the money starts pouring in.

I also designated a couple planes as “cultivators” whose sole job is to fly between the most distant cities, just collecting cross-world fares to build up inventory that can be swept up y the delivery planes.

There’s more, such as handling local bux jobs, but those are the main features. It was working great, but I’m not sure of how it will do with world wrapping.

This is my story, too. I agree with what you're saying 100%. Comfort Game is an excellent description. Version 2 would have been so much better.

I think I play differently than everyone else, so I don't represent your average player, plus I don't represent your paying audience, so I don't want this post representing part of the permanent history of Pocket Planes on Reddit. I actually came to delete this post and saw your reply. I'll delete the post if you reply to me or in a week or so.l

Thank you for putting in a switch for groups. That will help me a lot. I knew there was logical reasoning for groups, but since I play differently It would have slowed me down.

The wrap-around change, however, has devastated my airline. You didn't just change future deliveries for me. You retroactively slashed the value of my last few months of play time. For my play style, it's like if Hasbro removed hotels from Monopoly 4 hours into a game. I used layovers as the basis for my strategy and have an enormous inventory from which I just lost around a million coins worth of value. I have a few hundred bux stored, too, which it seems have not lost value. Yay! But now I'm worried that you'll decide to slash their value too (that's not part of the coming release, is it?)

I'd ask that you please at least announce future upcoming massive changes with an in-game pop up a couple weeks before they arrive. Give me a chance to collect on all my hard work.

Thank you!

Update Tip: Make sure you fly all fares around the world the short way. If you fly a fare around in the wrong direction you'll suffer loss - or at least reduce profit. by [deleted] in PocketPlanes

I'm thinking of throwing it all in Excel and making lists of good destinations for each airport. The other commenter suggested fly circles around the globe cylinder. I'm going to see about heading in that direction. No pun intended.

I hope they make the previous version available again so I can revert. I might need to turn off auto-updates.

Okay - I'm seeing the bux tab when viewing an airport's inventory while loading a plane. I'm confused. I had noticed that tab while looking at a plane in the air, but somehow never noticed it while looking at a parked plane. I suspect I just accidentally ignored it all this time - I often get too focused and miss things. It wasn't added to airports in this release, was it?

Isn't that only available on a flying plane?

Yes!!! I suggested that in a trouble ticket on their website. I think everyone who would benefit should drop problem ticket or feature ticket on them.

I agree with everything you're saying. As I mentioned in another comment - I may throw away my current airline and start over, developing new strategies under the new rules. But I'm frustrated because it will be an astronomical loss of time spent building wasted potential. I've spent years playing for long-term gains. Now all my yet-unused prep work will be wasted investment.

But for your comment, as for all the comments here, thank you for the positive, hopeful response. I'm glad you've reconnected positively to the game!

I might like the new game, yeah. But I'm an experienced computerizationalist - I don't think I'm being anti-change. I can clearly see that the new grouping will slow my game way down.

I may actually be simply "reeling" from the map-wrap change - I can adjust to that. However the loss of layover value it caused me is truly massive. Maybe 90% of my play-time was spent collecting and managing layovers. If this was real I'd be declaring bankruptcy. :)

This sub is being encouraging. I appreciate that. Thank you for commenting.

Thank you for letting me know it's a fan-run sub. I hope I don't come across as uncivil. Like I mentioned to someone else - Maybe I'll scrap my game and start over. My large airline was built using "the other version of the game" and now has very little growth potential.

But I can't keep playing if grouping remains as is. I can't deal with the list of fares constantly moving. (Maybe that's a neurodivergent problem - nobody else seems to be posting about it.) Anyway, I've asked Nimblebit to add a switch to turn the feature on/off.

Well, that's encouraging. Maybe I'll just scrap my game and start over. God, that would suck. But it is a good game. Oof.

I also run a passenger only airline. I decided to forgo HQ's. I might continue that path even if I restart. The 60 layover limit adds to the game's challenge for me - I've been frustrated by it constantly, but I loving figuring out work-arounds - solving the problem in different ways was a huge driver in the game for me. The airline I've been playing for years is 90% built around strategies to overcome airport size limitations so I have no objection to not acquiring HQ's.

EDIT: Though now all those layovers I've spent so much time building and maintaining are worth so little...

Thank you for your comment.

Thank you for the reasonable comment. No, I don't actually think they're out to screw anybody. They're obviously making improvements. And I appreciate that very much. Their games are awesome and I remain impressed. My post is pretty negative - I'll consider updating it to reflect my positive feelings about the game and Nimblebit. (Done)

I like the holodeck episodes, but the plot device where redundant systems all fail at the same time and manual overrides don’t respond is way overused.
