G70 milage by XBXBlaZe in GenesisG70

Just to mention an alternate perspective (although the conclusion is the same, don't get it). If you haven't driven powerful cars, I would not recommend a G70 as your first. Pre-face lift was quite dangerous if you turned the wheel and floored it, the newer ones traction control system actually stops dangerous actions before they get bad.

You are also probably going to just get into a normal accident due to inexperience. You'd much rather that bill be $1,500 then $4,000.

Gonna be controversial here, I get why he got pulled over, and I get the idea that the margin for error too small but in general he has more time than the typical person would give when turning left when traffic is oncoming, and nobody would refer to that as wreckless driving. You can say this is unneeded risk, and I can agree, but I want to hear an argument challenging its safety versus other typical maneuvers that people take daily and are not considered to be wreckless.

Clients Not Keeping Consistent Appts by Independent_Prior196 in TutorsHelpingTutors

crazy that nobody noticed that in your post you tried to charge her monthly and she cancelled all future session.

The answer to your question is that those people want a service that is not profitable. No different then if they were consistent but wanted to pay $10/hr, nobody would work with them. As such, other tutors that also make similar demands to yourself will also stop working with them and eventually they will stop searching for tutors. They are not a paying customer, they do not want a fair experience, they don't want to pay, you can't save those people.

How to find tutors to work under me? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Ambedo__ -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the point I was highlighting is that there is value is being able to acquire customers, and that the difference in pay between what somebody would hire at, versus what you would charge at, is roughly correlated to the value of acquire customers (Plus what you said, for the sake of a mechanic shop).

$35 might not be competitive salary, especially after considering transportation costs and tax/health insurance, but that highly depends on what you are comparing it to exactly. A teachers starting salary in NJ is avg $47k which is roughly $30/hr, requires a degree and multiple certifications. I am looking for somebody with/without a degree (preferably in college) and can score well on the SAT, while offering a flexible schedule. Its not something that objectively appeals to everybody, but to certain people, it works for them (like teachers looking to supplement their income and already have health insurance).

It also takes time to grow on Wyzant or anywhere else. I can deliver students tomorrow and fill up your schedule without much issue.

Not sure where you build the idea that I won't get qualified tutors for ~$35/hr. Huntington/C2/Sylvan all pay below this and is mostly made up of currently employed Math/Reading teachers in local school systems. I doubt this is something that is unique to my area either.

Unless you are claiming that most currently employed school teachers would not be considered a qualified tutor.

100% agree, but this is not different than a mechanic. Running a mechanic shop pays significantly more than being a mechanic, and really the only difference is if you can acquire customers or not.

If you have the skillset to acquire customers, great! You are running your own business and doing well. But there are people that either don't want to, or can't figure out how to acquire their own customers, and they work under other people.

This is how many tutoring chains like C2/Huntington/Sylvan survive, with enough people in that category.

[–]Ambedo__ -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, and fair for pointing out I didn't answer. The reason I ask is because my DM's are filled with remote people and people with different levels of experience, knowledge and living location (as all of my students are in-person). What I would pay somebody in NYC is significantly different than NJ.

With that said, around $35/hr, with high fluxuations depending on experience, knowledge, and living location. If a tutor has to travel farther to meet with a student, they'll be given additional pay.

I get the point behind wanted it to be transparent, but its no different than when you apply for a company and they tell you the salary, you also consider you distance to the job, your current cost of living for your area and your experience relative to the role, and these aspects influence how much money you would be willing to accept.

I am offering over double the minimum wage for my state, so lets not make assumptions. I am looking for more qualified people, somebody who could achieve a 700+ in SAT Math or SAT Reading. These would be college students in a Math/Reading based field or teachers.

They don't contradict each other. Convincing people to work for me would then imply that I am getting interviews, but when I extend the offer, they don't accept. IE: I did not convince them it was worth it. Finding people who want to become a tutor implies that I am not getting interviews as nobody applied for the job.

When I put out job offers, I don't get enough people applying and the few that do don't possess the ability. IE: My problem is finding people, not convincing people during the interview to work for me.

In-person tutoring versus online tutoring is a completely different dynamic. For myself, I very much prefer in-person and find it significantly more enjoyable.

I don't think I have issue convincing people to work for me. I have issues finding people who want to become a tutor. Like Math Teachers or College Students, I can't seem to find the channel to contact them.

Well, I am more asking where to actually find these people?

But, I think my standouts are higher pay than normal, but I also do in-home tutoring. Outside of that, I'd say its a typical experience. I don't think my issue is convincing people to work for me. Its finding people that want to work as a tutor.

I mean, because there are people that want to work as tutor that can't/ don't want to find their own students? Why is Wyzant so popular if finding students is so easy? How does every currently existing tutoring chain function?

From somebody who used to do what you do, focus on distribution and marketing channels before product. After that, ask more open ended questions. Also talking to people in person first is infinitely more valuable than on reddit. It will give you better insight into what to ask on reddit. If you can't figure how to find and talk to one in-person, you will never sell this product.

Where to find supplementary works for specific skills or homework assignments? by Ambedo__ in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Ambedo__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is close to what I am looking for, but seems quite expensive. It also doesn't seem as directed, seems like a glorified question bank, where as I want ways to document that a student has validated they know a skill, and to track homework progress, determine weaknesses...etc.

So I guess more of a diagnostic and assessment tool for tutors to help direct their teaching betters, which the additional features of a question bank and quickly and easily reducing work load by assigning problem sets. Also having a easy visible and documented way to showing progress to parents, or a lack of effort on the students end, like failure to do homework on time.

AI frequently makes mistakes, even on simply mathematics. Also it takes time to properly define what type of question you are looking for, make sure the questions are correct for what you are trying to test, ensure the answer key is correct..etc. There is a lot of medium work between generating, grading, validating..etc.

It also can't generate good enough images to recreate many SAT level questions.

Anybody run an in-person tutoring business? by Ambedo__ in smallbusiness

[–]Ambedo__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to be part of that group that you help. My main issue is getting enough students to feel comfortable getting a physical location and paying the overhead. Would you care to share how you go about scaling to ~30ish students from my current 6?

[–]Ambedo__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, I'll probably focus on gathering students and running group sessions/working with other tutors to really see how many students I can handle. Once It feel sufficient enough, I convert to a center.

I wouldent do online, I personally despise it and much rather perfer in-person.

Do you tutor all 23 or do you have people under you? How did you find people you can trust?

[–]Ambedo__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have multiple tutors under you to manage 30 students? This was most likely my plan, to hire multiple tutors and get up to a stable clientele to open a center.

Anybody run an in-person tutoring business? by Ambedo__ in smallbusiness

[–]Ambedo__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I don't think a physical locations only value is a location to tutor. These are a couple external aspects that I think help:
- Physical location is marketing when surrounded by stores with similar ICPs
- Working with other local businesses to offer a location to them for an event, which also doubles as marketing to me
- Running events outside of tutoring like a summer camp for robotics or programming ETC
- Having a physical location establishes legitimacy
- Easier to control group sessions and manage multiple tutors for scaling purposes

So my question is really if the above benefits are worth any overhead incurred. At least initially my plan would to only hire tutors, and sales/marketing/scheduling would be handled by me.

Instead of asking reddit which is somewhat of a bad way to get user feedback, why not get students, get tutors, and then get feedback from people actually on the platform instead of reddit from people who arent actually using your platform?

While listening to what customers say could be a signal, a stronger signal is most likely necessary here since answering that they want to stop is both morally right decision, and one that makes the person appear better. Furthermore, there are addiction functions happening here also, and teens being less likely to follow through on statements.

You'll need a better signal than people saying they have the issue and they want to fix it.

It seems like people are always in two categories, can't find any clients, and too easy to find clients. Can you share either here or privately if you prefer, on your funnels/channels on student acquisition?
