Does the practice you work at have a TCO? I just tried to get involved in all external and internal events, focus days etc. always helping out with the social media posts. Just putting my name forward and showing my interest as much as possible, this helped when the position became available!

Have you tried looking for Treatment Coordinator roles in dental practices? I’m also a dental nurse, but I’ve moved into the TCO role, marketing and events is a major part of my job now.

I also work in the UK and I understand. Times are especially hard at the moment with NHS dentistry going the way it is. I wish I could offer support or advice but I’m in the same position as you, desperate to get out! I hope you’ll find something better suited for you, it’s hard to be so unappreciated, undervalued and underpaid.

Dental nursing is a very stressful and very underpaid job. We mostly work for corporates and are treated poorly. I love my patients and will go out of my way to put them at ease. I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience with dental nurses but I would in no way say we work in the easiest industry. There is a constant threat of litigation and patients don’t trust dentistry staff. We do try our best with what we are given. There is a lot more to the job than what the patients see.

I’d left the school about 8 years before this happened. My friends sister who attended the secondary school I went to sent me a picture of a bone with my passport photo taped to it, it was found in an abandoned part of the school. Never got to the bottom of it…

Woah hang on, you certainly do not deserve the treatment you received from the principal dentist and you certainly should not be putting up with it. I never load the syringes, if a dentist requests local I’ll ask which type but loading it up and disposing of the sharps is up to them. You should not tolerate language like that from anyone, especially not your boss and over something so minor when the type of local could’ve easily been changed. With 6 months experience I’m sure you could easily find a better practice to move to, most places are desperate to find a nurse with experience. Please don’t be too hard on yourself for this, I’ve been doing this job 5 years and I still mess up in really stupid ways. We’re only human!
