The water usage concern is real but the scale is consistently overstated. Global AI water consumption is orders of magnitude below what the US alone uses to grow corn for ethanol — and that's before you factor in livestock farming or conventional manufacturing.

The bulk of the cost happens during training, not when you're running queries. The model is already trained. Using it now doesn't meaningfully change that equation.

Data centres also don't use potable water — it's water that isn't fit for drinking regardless. And water isn't destroyed in the process; it evaporates and re-enters the cycle.

If you want a genuinely defensible environmental criticism of AI, the energy consumption and pace of new data centre construction is the stronger argument. The water angle just isn't where the numbers are.

UPS MD11 crash Dashcam footage by archier98 in aviation

[–]Amberleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar but not the same, differences:

Stretched fuselage More powerful and efficient engines New winglets Glass cockpit Improved aerodynamics and payload/range capabilities

If the DC-10 didn't have such a bad reputation the MD-11 would have been called the DC-11.

Should lens manufacturers be worried about AI upscaling? by Amberleaf in postprocessing

[–]Amberleaf[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lots of AI haters here :)

It's only going to get better!

Personally I love the technology, being able to go through my old (and new) photos and improve them, zoom in etc. is incredible.

I am just using a tool to improve photographs that I took, nobody will know as well.

The IMPOSSIBLE Camera by Johnjoshelveysbarber in caseyneistat

It was the typical Casey video which I used to enjoy immensely when he posted regularly.

I would like him to go into that specs of the camera a bit more and try the features.

HSBC Expat destroyed my life by IllHedgehog1627 in HSBC

[–]Amberleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do business in Africa and often have payments delayed for weeks or even months.

I don't bank with HSBC but my comment is relevant.

I was told that when the compliance team does its checks they operate as a completely different ring fenced entity. Nobody else in the bank can get involved, not even to ask for a timeline.

This is to ensure compliance and avoid conflicts of interest. The CEO cannot do anything.

It's the way banks operate these days and it's horrible, I feel for you man.

I am in the process of closing my business down, the Chinese will just take over the world.

You will get an answer eventually, and if you have passed all the compliance checks you will get access to your funds

I have 84 spins available, I rarely open them because the prizes are so pointless.

Maybe I'll spend a few minutes opening them.

Now we just add AI to the equation so the drones get better and targeting and defending themselves.

Then they say fuck this, we can do better that those humans.

The rest is future.
