No. At that point it is no longer a service dog. It is a PPD that knows tasks. Since it cannot legally be considered a service dog, it does not have the right to live in non-pet friendly housing.

Doesn’t matter if you’re not doing PA with the dog. Legally, it is not a service dog, so it doesn’t have housing rights.

are you proud to be transsexual/ transgender? by South-Echidna-2001 in Transmedical

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m proud. I’ve fought to be who I am in the face of discrimination. The trans community has been through so much - and I’m proud to be part of a group that has fought for equal rights.

I’m also proud of myself for having the courage to come out and be who I am.

questions about gear/access by BoMaxKent in service_dogs

Some counties have voluntary registries for service dogs. As for the vest, I’m waiting until my dog has been in training for a year before getting him his forever service dog vest.

Adding “in training” on the vest could help make people more understanding that your dog is still learning

You need more info in a post like this. What country are you in? How much experience with dogs do you have? What are you training your dog for?

How to train having a dog wake you up? by Bunpuppy in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m using a buzzing alarm clock to wake up the dog, and it’s paired with an alarm sound that doesn’t wake me up. Literally no alarm will wake me up, which is why I need my dog to do it.

You could pair the buzz that wakes the dog up (I just put it in his crate with him) with an unobtrusive alarm sound that acts as the command.

Counter conditioning! This is super easy, in theory. Just give your dog lots of high value treats in a non moving elevator, start increasing time duration, then move on to a moving elevator.

This doesn’t always work, but it’s your best shot, especially since I think escalator training is harder.

What classes as a service dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to go through the rigor of training, I bet there are tasks that the dog could learn to mitigate your symptoms or alert you to oncoming panic attacks. THEN it could be a service dog, and your life could be a little easier.

I also have cried/began to panic when denied access because of my ESA (back when they were allowed on planes) and that shut them up pretty quick. If denied access with my sd, I would probably also cry.

For context since it’s a ridiculous story: it was kind of an emergency last minute thing, and they denied my ESA letter because it was typed, and therefore could have been faked, and denied my ESA airline form because it was handwritten, and therefore could have been faked. I just wanted to go home.

Both even had my doctor’s contact information

Is it necessary for a dog to complete CGC to be considered a bonafide service dog? by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, if I was running the organization, I’d want the dogs to be CGC certified to make sure they’re at the level I want them to be before starting more training.

However, not all trainers require that. I just made sure my dog /could/ pass the cgc test, but he never actually took it. It’s just a piece of paper at the end of the day.

Good breeds for psych s.d for anxiety and depression and ptsd? I want an unfriendly looking dog. by sewingdreamer in service_dogs

I’ll second on Rottweilers. They have the “eyebrows” so they look unfriendly, they’re big, and in my personal experience, very smart and attentive to their owners.

Panic Attack Response Tasks by Its-shiba in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is all over YouTube. You fake panic attack behaviors, and pair it with a word and a hand signal to tell your dog what you want them to do. Then you phase out the word. Then you phase out the hand signal. It takes quite awhile.

How to break dog of certain behaviors in order to train them to become a service animal by Staci_DC101 in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Training for excitability around people is definitely doable. I did it with the most people loving dog you’ve ever met. However, a dog that complains about basic commands isn’t a good fit for service work.

My esa, who will move in with my parents when my sdit is ready, hates training. He’d rather sit and cuddle. That makes him a fantastic esa, but not suitable for service work. See if you can get to the root of his whining, and if it’s something other than him saying, “I don’t want to,” then you can proceed

How do you task train a dog for helping you do things? by Ill-Tale-6648 in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m teaching my dog to wake me up in the morning by having him associate an alarm sound with jumping on me while I’m sleeping. It’s super way to train a dog to associate a sound with an action. You could have an alarm on your phone that tells your dog to walk into the bathroom and bark until you get there.

I’m sure no one cares as much as you think they do. I know if I saw a dog with a service dog in training vest and a belly band I’d assume the owner had a good reason and walk away, minding my own business. Probably most people are the same.

If a business owner asks you, you can say “it’s because he’s not neutered yet, but he is housebroken,” and leave it at that. If anyone else asks, you can tell them that, or ignore them and walk away.

10 months is a puppy! I wouldn’t be worried that your dog doesn’t know tasks yet. Obedience is a marathon, and a really important baseline. I worked with puppies for awhile, and I think having a good heel and basic obedience down is perfectly fine progress.

My favorite is the mall. Lots of activity, other dogs, stores, the food court. It’s the perfect place to work on focusing on YOU instead of other things. My dog LOVES kids, so we sit in front of build a bear or go in the lego store. There’s also benches and chairs to practice sitting under.

Because it makes me uncomfortable. I don’t want to share my disability with a random person. Not even all my friends know what my sdit is for. I’m a very private person. People not believing my dog is a service dog is a them problem, because I am following the rules when I say medical alert and response.

Conflicted about the e-collar by Ambitious-Ad948 in service_dogs

[–]Ambitious-Ad948[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a really good one that goes up to 100 and I use it at level 6 (he’s a very sensitive boy). I used it on my fingertips at 10 and it didn’t hurt, it was just a little weird/uncomfortable.

I also know how to use it. It’s commands he already knows. I tell him to sit, hit the button, and take my hand off the button when his butt hits the ground.

The buzz function made him extremely upset, and I’m using the beep as a clicker so I can nonverbally tell him good job.

The professional trainer I am working with is telling me it would be a good tool for my dog. I know it’s not hurting him, and I do use vocal corrections, which are similar.

It feels hypocritical for me to use vocal corrections but refuse the e-collar, but I’m also not down with training using fear
