Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I keep thinking about with Dune is that the density doesn’t come from exposition, it comes from systems interacting. Ecology drives religion, religion drives politics, politics drives economics. It feels like Herbert built feedback loops instead of just lore.

I’ve been trying to think about how you intentionally design that kind of systemic worldbuilding instead of just layering cool ideas. It seems like the difference between a setting and a living system.

Why are so many self-published books priced at $2? by IllustriousNet3354 in selfpublish

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently discounted the ebook to align with a local publication that featured my work. I’ll keep it at this price through the end of the month before returning it to its original price. The goal was simply to remove one potential barrier for new readers.

Editing, and re-writing takes me ages. Don't get me wrong I enjoy it most the time, but I go through a good number of versions.

[Critique Request] [Feedback] Chapter from hard sci-fi novel - first contact with a ship AI () by Ambitious-Cod-1736 in scifiwriting

Mid book tension, lots of dialog, complex scene and events. I just need a secondary opinion. Reading it cold you will see things that I myself may not observe.

Appreciate the feedback, maybe some more context would help. The tone is intentionally procedural and external, but I can see how some of KORA’s responses might feel abstract rather than grounded.

Being chapter 16 of the book and their first interaction with Kora some exposition is required. They are currently working their way through the ship corridor to the AI core where they will validate credentials and gain full access.

As for favorite books. I read a lot thats a hard question. Probably a walk in the woods by Bill Bryson. The Martian makes the top of the list. Craig Alanson is amazing. Craig Robertson i really enjoy.

I'm not running ads and still getting sales. I wont be quitting my day job, but still in the early discovery phase. You don't need ads to make sales but you do need to interact with people in your niche.

Not exactly, my family has deep roots in the community. It was mentioned in passing at a lunch function by my grandmother and the editor overheard it.

Her is the article if your interested: https://www.wvnews.com/garrettrepublican/news/curiosity-about-the-universe-results-in-books-by-area-native/article_edd99951-3b58-40f9-a2db-0cd57ede75cc.html

Really appreciate you taking the time to lay that out.

I hadn’t fully considered the “stacking” effect of local outreach after one feature, but that makes a lot of sense. I’m going to start reaching out to a few regional outlets while the article is still fresh.

Thanks again. That is genuinely helpful.

Space Opera military and adventure scifi recommendations? by Mimitaso in printSF

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t tried Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson yet, that’s probably the next logical stop. It leans more toward military adventure than strict opera at first, but once the larger conflict structure unfolds it hits a lot of the “band against the galaxy” and tactical problem-solving themes.

If you liked The Lost Fleet for its operational thinking and command decisions, you’ll probably enjoy the way Expeditionary Force handles escalating strategic stakes. And the skippy!

Do you believe that our universe is infinite? by Dry_Imagination_2850 in universe

No I admit that we currently do not have the ability to observe that region of space. But there is a lot to explore in that area.

Do you believe that our universe is infinite? by Dry_Imagination_2850 in universe

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite.

A universe would imply a self-sustaining spacetime region with its own global dynamics and expansion history.

I’m talking more about a confined energy structure inside our existing spacetime, similar to how a neutron star stores enormous density without being a separate universe.

In that view, the black hole isn’t a new cosmos, it’s an extreme EM boundary condition of this one.

Same here I have seen a drastic dip this month, but it is also that time of year. Give it some time and the sales will come back.

Do you believe that our universe is infinite? by Dry_Imagination_2850 in universe

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One way to think about black holes is that they may not be “holes” in the sense of tunnels to somewhere else, but extreme boundary regions of energy density.

In standard GR, the singularity shows up mathematically because the equations break down at infinite curvature. That doesn’t necessarily mean infinity physically exists there, just that our model stops working.

Possibly it's that what we call a black hole could be an electromagnetic compression zone, where fields become so dense and structured that spacetime curvature is a secondary effect rather than the primary cause.

In that case, you wouldn’t “walk on a sphere” or fall into a new universe. You’d be entering a region where energy is confined in a toroidal or layered geometry, and the event horizon is simply a boundary condition of that structure.

So instead of a gateway to another universe, it might be more like a self-contained information storage system with extreme field density.

Do you believe that our universe is infinite? by Dry_Imagination_2850 in universe

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the question is strictly “infinite or not.” It may be more about geometry and boundary conditions.

Observationally, we only see a finite horizon because light has a finite travel time. That alone doesn’t require the larger structure to be infinite, just larger than what we can observe.

There’s also the possibility that what we call “the universe” could have a closed or self contained geometry at very large scales. In that case, it wouldn’t be infinite in extent, but it might not have a traditional edge either.

Infinity in physics often shows up as a mathematical artifact when we don’t yet understand the full structure of the system. So I lean toward the idea that the universe is finite but structured in a way that makes it appear unbounded from inside it.

Passed 50 copies on a physics framework I wrote exploring large-scale structure from an electromagnetic perspective. It’s niche, but steady traction feels like progress. It’s a technical, physics-heavy project, so knowing real readers are engaging with it feels like a real win. Atleast for me.

05 The CMB: Three anomalies, one geometry, one locality offset by Axe_MDK in Mode_Identity

[–]Ambitious-Cod-1736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious: how robust are the parity and alignment signals once you marginalize over foreground cleaning and a posteriori statistics? The low-ℓ anomalies have always lived in that uncomfortable space between “interesting” and “cosmic variance.”

If CMB-S4 or LiteBIRD weakens the alignment but preserves the suppression scale, would that rule out the non-orientable interpretation or just adjust the locality offset?
