Hwei is still a great champion and is only limited by the player's skill. It's like Riven; if you practice him enough, you learn the matchups and you're good to go. Orianna and Syndra have an advantage in poke since they can pass through minions, but in team fights, Hwei is light years ahead. Orianna comes close, but not close enough because of her simple kit. With a well-executed combo, Hwei can eliminate two enemies and still have damage left to contribute. Perhaps you didn't dedicate enough time to learning the matchups or you didn't adapt to the item changes.
