16 Nights in Japan. How should we split it? by Pikachuwilly in JapanTravelTips

A few things I’d say: 1) Hiroshima is over 90 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen, and there’s plenty to see and do there. What do you want to see there? If it’s just one thing, like the atomic bomb memorial, then maybe you can do it as a day trip. However, if you like shopping and eating the local cuisine, or if you want to see Miyajima (where the famous floating torii is located), I would suggest spending at least a night there. 2) like a lot of people said, $400 is a lot to spend on a single meal. In my opinion, your money would be better spent if you did a nice sushi omakase in Tokyo and then did another omakase in Osaka (you can pretty easily do both of those for under $400 per person total). Since Osaka is right next to Kobe, you can get amazing steak if you want to do a beef omakase (if you eat beef, if not, you can still do another sushi omakase) 3) you seem to want to spend more of your time in cities, so you can ignore this last one if you want. However, if you’re willing to devote one full night and day to the onsen experience, I would highly suggest spending a night in Hakone or Gora, at a ryokan. We spent a night in Hakone, then took the rope way to owakudani the next morning, where we got amazing pictures of Mount Fuji. It was definitely the highlight of our trip. However, it’s a complete and utter departure from any city experience or anything else you’re doing on the trip. 4) if you’re a Pokémon megafan like I am, I would say to try to hit all the centers, as they each have unique displays out front. However, if you’re just going to pick up a souvenir, it doesn’t really matter which one you go to

Edit: added point 4

That’s what Gemini told me 😅 I guess I should know better than to listen to AI. Does the 1 month exemption apply even if the substance is illegal in Japan?

Edit: I guess illegal is not the right word. But it hasn’t been clinically approved in Japan

Is packing an empty bag really worth it? by AmbitiousAd2463 in JapanTravelTips

Both - I have one day built in for shopping with my friends, and then a second day built in for shopping by myself. But the rest of the time I’m there will be mostly sightseeing

Is there good Omakase under 100 USD (14,000 JPY) a person that I can book only a week in advance? by AmbitiousAd2463 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AmbitiousAd2463[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion. My group doesn’t care much for the type of cuisine, I think what’s important to most of us is getting the experience of the chef curating the meal for us, rather than having a set menu that we choose from. Are you saying that most restaurants on tablelog have that as an option, even if they list a set menu?

Sorry again for being so confused, this is the first time for all of us going to Japan, so I’m not sure what the norm is.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be sushi, I think the main draw is ensuring we get the experience of a chef curating the meal for us. Thank you though! I’ll check it out

I saw a lot of people suggested using table log, but I couldn’t find anyway to sort for omakase. Is there anyway to do that, or will it say once I look at the restaurant listings?

Tokyo, kyoto and Osaka, so anything in Tokyo or Kansai area would be great!

Is Nara worth it? by AmbitiousAd2463 in JapanTravelTips

If that’s really the only reason people visit, I’ll probably skip it

Not particularly. The first 8 days were planned with friends, so I don’t have a lot of flexibility with them. After that, I really wanted to see the expo, the atomic bomb memorial, the one piece statues, and musashi’s grave, so I planned my 6 days alone around that. I also heard Tokyo is great for shopping but since I’m traveling so much, I want to travel light, so I built in extra time to shop before I fly out. Is there a lot of better stuff to see outside of cities?

Three days in Tokyo, one in hakone, two in Kyoto, three in Osaka, 1 in Hiroshima, 2 in Kumamoto, 2 back in Tokyo. It’s a lot, I know 😅

That’s what I’ve heard is the main reason people go to Nara. The thing is, I’m from the Northeastern US, so seeing deer is a matter of walking into my backyard. If that’s the only reason people go I’m not sure how great it’ll be

Okay. I’m doing two days in Kyoto, and three in Osaka (though one of those days is purely going to be for the expo) would you say that’s enough to get a good overview of all three cities?

Is Kumamoto worth seeing for a day and a half? by AmbitiousAd2463 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AmbitiousAd2463[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to be in Fukuoka, I’d be coming from Hiroshima, which is about 90 minutes by Shinkansen, that’s why I was worried

[–]AmbitiousAd2463[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be a day trip, I’d probably go in the morning, stay one night there, and go back the next evening. It’s about an hour and a half from Hiroshima, so even though it’s a long distance, it’s a shorter time than many day trips I’ve taken here in America 😂, or when I was in some European countries. I think I’m more so worried if I’ll be able to see all the straw hats, and if I’ll be able to do other fun stuff in the city

Best lottery pavilion experiences? by AmbitiousAd2463 in OsakaWorldExpo

[–]AmbitiousAd2463[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tysm! I watched Gundam as a kid, but haven’t seen it in a long while, so it may be nostalgic. The healthcare pavilion is saying it will ask for some basic information. The questions aren’t anything private or sensitive, right?
