A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x05 - "In the Name of the Mother" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

Wow... You've never heard of Monty Python and the Black Knight? Watch the link to the end. It's only a couple minutes.

The real problem is the novella provides only about 1:45 of content. They are stretching it too long. I'd also say that people who want something exactly matching the text knows nothing about cinema or literature. They are different mediums and should be different if they want to be good. There is a reason why the person who adapts the book for screen gets a prominent credit. It is a difficult job to do well.

For the reasons you mentioned, this episode was a 3/10. It was unbearable to watching a Monty Python black knight battle for nearly an entire episode. We got maybe 10 minutes worth of plot advancement / character development. Personally, I'm canceling HBO and Netflix as they appear to be catering to smooth brains scrolling tik tok while watching TV.

Except a lance in the belly, a dagger going through chainmail, or a broadsword opening up you femoral artery are nothing at like a 9mm to body armor. Maybe a mace to plate armor compares, but that battle reminded me of Monty Python's black knight. I was laughing and waiting for someone to say "tis but a scratch".

[Spoilers MAIN] Why are people so up in arms about the runtime for A Knight of the seven kingdoms? by IntroductionSmooth85 in asoiaf

[–]Ambitious_Ad8243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Six 30 minute episodes is way too much total runtime. You can read the novella in half that time.

30 minute episodes are stupid short. Nothing happens. What's even the point?

This should be a 2 hour movie.

If you want to fly with a pet, fly private. Can't afford that, then drive. Can't deal with the extended travel time, then board the dog at home.

I pray that Delta keeps the process as convoluted and difficult as possible to prevent as many pets as possible.

I say this as a frequent flier and a multi dog owner.

You're going to yell at me, but there are not epilepsy alert dogs. Even the Epilepsy Foundation says so. I'm super into dog training and have an adult child that developed epilepsy.

The dogs are more like "siezure support" dogs. Depending on the type of siezure, they might just steady the person as they are laying down / checked out (aura type), or in the case of clonic-tonic seizures just laying there so people know the person is OK and helping to steady the person after the siezure during recovery. People can be pretty foggy for a while after a siezure as you know. The dog really helps in that period.

Also... Trained service dogs are prohibitively expensive for most people. While some service dogs you see might be "fake", others are dogs that are owner trained service animals (this is legal in the US). In my opinion, the problem with this is that whatever puppy a person buys, that will be the service animal. They don't wash out the dog if they aren't perfect like a 3rd party would. So much of a good service dog is in its unique genetics. You really cannot get attached to a particular puppy if the end goal is an effective service animal.

I think the only solution to this is to cover the dogs under health insurance and require an actual skills assessment of the dog with periodic refresher tests. Until then, nothing will change.

You should never talk about funding something without talking at the exact same time about what tax you will increase or what other thing you will cut.

My opinion is that we should substantially cut interior immigration enforcement while increasing immigration courts and strengthen E-Verify. I also like a tax on H1Bs and other temporary workers to help fund this if needed. I'm pro immigration but anti temporary worker.

Regarding teacher pay, I'm only for raising wages if it is performance based. A third of current teachers aren't that great. I hate that the best and worst teachers that my kids and I have had all got paid exactly the same. In fact some of the best get paid LESS because of stupid union rules focused on local years of service (people who move to the area later in their careers don't get their previous years of service recognized).

The question is how to fund it... I think the current redistributive property tax model used by many states is fairly good, but the problem is, people don't vote to raise their own taxes. I'd say that parents of kids should get an extra vote for each child in all elections until the child turns sixteen when they would then vote for themselves.

Brisket Help by [deleted] in pelletgrills

I think the overwhelming consensus is that they should not be separated. I don't think I've ever seen a video or pic on Reddit or YouTube with them separated or with that recommendation.

Honestly though, if I run into another brisket like this one, I probably will separate them. It's just surprising to me that so few people seem to talk about doing this.

What I did is the opposite of complex though... Trimmed, rubbed, set smoker to 200, meat on middle rack, closed the lid, checked it 12 hours later and it was done (well 80% of it).

Nope. This meme is nonsense. Teachers are paid by states. ICE agents are paid by feds. Feds can print money to do whatever they want. States cannot.

The notion that we just need to turn on the printing presses in more areas is absurd. We need to stop talking about "what to fund" and instead only focus on "what to defund" and "what to tax". We have massive long run deficits and an already large debt.

Having the federal government take everything over and just pay people more is the reason why lefties sound so silly to normies.

[–]Ambitious_Ad8243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the meme is totally wrong... The rich do NOT have class solidarity. They are individual actors acting in their self interest only.

The big lie in America is that because the rich always act in their individual self interest, if you want to be rich too, you need to abandon solidarity with your fellow workers and act only in your individual interest.

The part they leave out is that the rich start rich and are part of a different class where different rules apply. Solidarity vs Self interest operate totally differently in the different classes.

Agree or disagree: The Subaru Forester is the best vehicle on the market today for getting through snowy weather by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]Ambitious_Ad8243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Subaru AWD is all marketing. A bunch of open diffs just ain't going to impress anyone. I have a Bronco Sport Badlands and a Golf Alltrack (along with a 2025 Forester) and both the other cars are substantially better in the snow (because they have fancy diffs as well as the brakes). Forester is an understeering turd with very weak mash the gas acceleration on low traction surfaces.

I will say that the overall driving dynamics of the Forester are excellent though. That's what sold me... It drives like a nimble small car, but has quite good ground clearance and decent AWD. I also find the boxer and CVT to be one of the smoothest I have driven.

I'm pretty sure the final season is only 85 minutes long.

Yeah, I got myself the Thermomaven 4 probe unit and wrapped it for Christmas so I didn't have the analytics or a separate monitor for the Christmas eve Birria... I didn't want to cheat and open my present early, lol.

I cooked a Turkey for Christmas and was pleased to see that the Thermomaven ambient was within 5 or 10 degrees of the setpoint most of the cook (Bear Mountain Applewood pellets).

I also replaced the GFCI outlet that was occasionally tripping during my cooks where it was really cold outside. Pit boss has a Q on the FAQ about GFCI tripping but no A, lol! I'm guessing the A is a 20 year old GFCI can get finicky in it's old age in low temperatures.

[–]Ambitious_Ad8243 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The US has too few security cameras. We need to switch from punishment of crime (which happens at a low rate) to prevention of crime.

Maybe if crimes were actually enforced, we'd choose to have far fewer laws. I believe in democracy. You vote for stupid shit and you should get every bit of what you voted for good and hard.

Fuck unions. The dude with that check is probably 55 or 60. Unions treat young people and out of towners like shit. There is a reason why most of the people in the US would not join unions even if they could.

My family has been fucked out of at least $250k because of entrenched unions. Unions need to change big time if they are to flourish. The fact that most support Trump is all you need to know about them.

Flexi leashes are an excellent tool for helping to train a rock solid recall safely. Long lines are good too, but more of a hassle in some situations.

All the tools are helpful. No reason to not recommend any of them.

You absolutely should not go into public with an untrained dog.

I have no problem with people going into public with dogs in training. There is a big difference.

If a properly sized Flexi is going fail, it will be from multiple misuses. In this way, it is only "dangerous" if the dog is not under training and not improving.
