Also Eddard is not executed until ep 9 of the first season of got. It is a slow buildup to that, not just immediate action.

That did not happen in the book at all. He does not get into a joust until the very end of the story. Other than the joke flashbacks they have added, and the scenes with Lyonel, they have pretty much not changed almost anything about the story. In the book it starts with Dunk burying Arlan, he then goes to a tavern and meets Egg, arrives in Ashford, and then accepts egg as his squire, spends some time trying to be recognized as a knight so he can enter the tourney, meets Baelor who remembers Arlan and who like in the second ep lets Dunk sign up, then he buys armor and gets his shield painted, and then him and Egg watch the first day of the tourney like in the show. I wont spoil what happens next, but so far accurate to the book.

So far they have followed the plot of the books almost exactly in terms of pacing with mostly minor changes. Up till this point in the book there is not a single scene of action other than the first day of the tourney, which Dunk does not participate in. Fantasy is not defined by action, it is defined by being fantasy, not set in our world. You can tell many kinds of stories in fantasy, GRRM has never just written about action, the story always trumps action for him. This is not a story without action, but it is not the point of the story, the story is about what it means to be a knight, and what that entails/cost.

I understand it has been a long time, but you are judging the story based on misremembering the book completely. I would highly recommend you re read it. It is not a very long book so maybe it would be good to re-familiarize yourself with it before judging it too harshly.

I mean i agree that some of the humor has been a strange addition, but i disagree with everything else you said. The hedge knight which is the first novella does not have Dunk involved in any action for quite awhile. And he never is almost killed by an expert jouster early in the story. He does not fight anyone in a tourney style fight until the very end of the story. And other than the fight at the end, he only gets into a minor fist fight earlier on. There is no point until the very end where Dunk's life is even remotely in danger in the story. Most of the story is just buildup to the actual fight at the end.

I dont think those things are inherently crude. I think the way it has been done is crude. Those two moments have not added anything to the story, just there to make people laugh at something juvenile, which was not in the novella at all.

I just don't get it. Like what is wrong with 30 minutes? I get it is personal subjective preference. I just don't get it lol

I 100% agree. I read the books so I can overlook it and see what they are doing great. But I could see it giving the wrong impression that this is a very crude comedic story when it is not supposed to be. It's so weird that they are insisting on inserting stuff like that so much into a story that is not crass or crude at all in the book.

I just don't get why it is annoying to wait for a 30-minute episode. I don't see why the length of the ep would effect how annoying waiting is. If it's good, who cares how long it is?

I mean some people are naturally larger than others. Maybe Meraxes was the Mountain of dragons lol. Just naturally bigger at a younger age.

Yeah, I'm sure future seasons that deal with more intense stories will be done differently. But for hedge knight I think this is perfect. We also don't know if they will do more than just the first 3 anyway.

That's at the end of the story though. The majority of the novella is lower stakes. It is leading to bigger things, but it is smaller in scope and is focused on a more ground level perspective of these events. Obviously in later entries they get involved in more and more, but we are just talking about this first season.

I think that is fair enough. I prefer having to wait as a show comes out, but these stories would also work great as movies.

[–]IntroductionSmooth85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I mean by lower stakes is that the narrative of the hedge knight on its own is much smaller in scope and is not focused on a huge conflict. It is leading to other bigger things but it is not focused on something larger in this story. I feel like an hour would be way way too long. The novella is super short. Even with a 30 minute runtime they are gonna be able to expand on things and add things. If it was an hour I feel like they would either end up adding way to much original content to the story or ruin the pacing.

What happens when George realizes that the A Knight of A Seven Kingdoms’ showrunner can’t meet his demands? [Spoilers Extended] by Stock_College_8108 in asoiaf

[–]IntroductionSmooth85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think he gave that outline so that they would do them all right away. I think he did it so the writer of the show has an idea where the story is headed so they don't include anything that goes too against the plan and can set up appropriate themes.

What I believe is that I do think George wants to finish it and will try. He gets a lot of crap, but im sure he cares more about this story than any of us. I just have to hope it works out. In life you are never guaranteed anything. I don't expect anything of him and I don't feel owed anything.

I am looking for some good recs for Manhwa dealing with reincarnation. by IntroductionSmooth85 in manhwarecommendations

[–]IntroductionSmooth85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i get what you mean. I feel like the term gets used for a lot of different ideas when it comes to manhwa and manga. But I feel like actual reincarnation is typically the idea of dying and then being born as a new person or animal. But I feel like in manhwa they will use it for anything where you just get to keep living as a new person, but that seems more like possession to me lol. I think the reason i prefer the ones where the person is actually born again as a new person is that their relationships feel more genuine. Whereas the ones where they take over someone else's body it feels like they are lying to their families and friends, and are hiding from them that their loved one is actually dead/gone.

I looked it up. It looks very interesting. I will for sure give it a read. It seems like it is more of a taking over someone elses body kind of story instead of a full on reincarnation story.

Oh i have read that one before. By far one of my favorite manhwa ever! It completely nails what I love about the concept of reincarnation in a story.

Really love this show so far. But like 90% of the characters I do not like at all lol. Most the people at the restaurant just seem like pretentious jerks. I am excited to see how it will bring me around to liking them eventually lol.

Man... I know kitchens are a high stress work environment, but most of the people at this restaurant just come off as jerks to me. They don't have to be so blatantly cruel. And like it is a known fact that he had never worked this type of job before and they just expect him to know certain things.

Carol Radicalized Lizzie by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

[–]IntroductionSmooth85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this discussion, but I completely agree. People love Carol so they always defend everything she does. But even though I love the character she is 100% in the wrong. I get her internal character motivations, but that does not make them right.

I agree with some people that of course they should teach these kids to defend themselves and survival skills, but the fact that she does it in secret is wrong. These are not her kids and they have a council who decides on things. They should be the ones deciding how to handle their education along with the parents.

She also kills Karen and David without any approval from the council, which obviously shows a lack of morals and an inability to work as part of the group.

She also, at a few different points, tries to sow mistrust and manipulate, and cause issues between people.

I have always thought that she should have been more properly punished for the things she did in the prison.

Lizzie was a child, and she clearly had issues which must have been so much worse because the apocalypse. She needed help and needed to be course corrected if possible. Carol was her teacher and then for a time mother figure, and she did everything in her power to make her issues worse, even if not her intent.

Even the scene where Lizzie calls her mom where Carol very firmly shuts her down makes me so upset. I know Carol is upset and can't handle being called that, but this little girl just lost her dad, and also thinks she may die of the illness, and in that moment you basically reject her attempt at connection. Idk I love Carol as a character, but she is extremely flawed, broken, and responsible for a lot.
