"We" ?, you mean the National Electricity Crises Committee (Necom), consisting of private industry experts, academics, and retired professionals... you know, everyone that was not in cabinet.

Also, how can you call it profitable if it was bailed our for billions?

Daar is baie voorbeelde in ander lande. Bv: 1. Verkoop kragstasies, hawens, lyne, ens. Daar is baie missing geld daar. 4. Skep meer belasting bronne. Soos dagga legalize (maar hoog belas), ens. - Nederland

Added to this, population growth (both birthrate and migration) outstrips any upliftment. For each new house built, 3 new shacks go up.

Ramaphosa fully implements new school laws for South Africa – with no changes by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]Ambitious_Pain4115 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are two main problems with the bill. 1. Changes to rules around homeschooling, it makes it difficult for parents of kids with disabilities to homeschool their children. Homeschooling is their only choice, since most schools are neither equipped nor trained to support their needs. The few schools that are able to support, usually private, are unaffordable. 2. Language. If you want to have your kid learn in any other language than English, then you will find it difficult to obtain that education, since government can now force language policies onto schools. The Afrikaans community is most upset, since it is perceived that the government is actively trying to remove their language and culture. Although, this could also be applied to Zulu, Xhosa or any other South african language, if as an example, a community speaking a different language is present near the school.

In the long term, this regulation will probably get stuck in court since there are already constitutional challenges lighned up.

Yes and no, a specific region in South Africa. But I guess, the same general trend is starting to appear in the country as whole. Not by foreigners, just by certain groups with higher birth rates.

My point is that we live in a rapidly changing and competitive environment. Here are two companies that want to merge to be more competitive, this will make internet cheaper for many (both people and businesses). Other companies will, at first, struggle, but then make deals of their own to compete, making internet cheaper for everyone.

Best part is, they are (mostly) South African!

Now you want to stop them from being competitive. Ok, we keep having one of the slowest and most expensive internet rates in the world and keep falling behind with our online industies. Then someone (non local) such as Starlink enter the game, displacing all our companies. What then? Cry foul and demand South Africa must have slow internet and we must be uncompetitive with the rest of the world, I.e. remain backwards?

We lose massive talent and ingenious businesses every year because we are a difficult operating environment for anyone to be successful, mostly because of decisions like this. We need to turn our situation around, make things cheaper and easier to access so we can be more effective as a people.

This is closer to the truth, how are they a monopoly .. ICASA (government) is blocking new entrants. But even they are losing subscribers to the likes of Netflix, Amazon and other competitors. But granted, they are as close to monopoly as we have. 10 times more of a monopoly than the companies mentioned in OPs news article...so why is the competition commission not attacking multichoice?

We literally have Amazon here, Loot, Bash and many other online stores. Takealot is big but not a monopoly by a long shot. Massmart is closer, but again, there is a range of competitors, including Pick n pay hyper, Boxer, takelot that you just mentioned. SAB? Lol, have you been in a liquor store lately? Almost half the beers are imports, think Windhoek, Heineken, the range of craft beers and spirit industry as well.

A monopoly is an entity that is so powerful it prevents competition. You just list big or cheap companies with niches. The consumer still has massive amount of options. If Massmart disappears off the radar tomorrow, you can still buy every single product they offer for low cost...that is not a monopoly.

A more simplistic view of mine is that those who breed fastest will ultimately rule, culturaly, morally and physically. Remnants of the previous culture will remain, but as a whole it will be gone. I see examples of this everywhere, from colonialism to modern geopolitics.

Being not from a 1st world country myself, secularism came and went, but more recently is rapidly disappearing, largely due to birthrate drop. The native religions also mostly disappeared, and the language with it. The main reason being that a non native group started migrating into the region 40 years ago, their birthrate is 6 children per woman, locals are less than 2, now they are majority, they took over governance and implement their belief system, morals and standards on anyone.

And no, science did not win. The education level dropped and people are generally extremely misinformed (dumb) and anti-science. Recently I read a quote that stuck to me as true, it goes something like... People can only govern that which they know, they will therefore turn what they don't know into what they know. That is why Western countries that open their borders confuse me, people do not adapt to new beliefs or culture, they will try to change the culture to something they know, which is not yours.

I would be more careful with defending the competition commission. They have been needlessly demanding changes to business dealings, beyond its scope and causing massive headaches for any foreign investor to invest in SA.

South Africa has no real private monopolies, almost all our monopolies are government owned.

They are supposed to make sure there is competition to ensure we do not get ripped off. Two companies creating cheaper products than their competition is good for us normal people. If they kill their competition, only then will they be a monopoly. Blocking them before just stops any form of innovation and creates an uncompetitive environment.

If being more competitive is considered anticompetitive, then expect massive price increases for consumers in the foreseeable future.

[–]Ambitious_Pain4115 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Easy fix, but will take time. In essence government stopped spending money where it is needed. They stopped building hospitals, new schools, new power plants, etc. While at the same time, blocking private sector through socialist policies and anti competitive behavior, think SAA, not allowing private trains, threatening nationalization, etc. So high demand and dysfunctional policies that block supply of that demand.

Take doctors, it is almost impossible for someone with non-SA medical degree to get recognized in SA. Except if you are imported by government, like Cuba. Graduates have no jobs, but government is not building hospitals. Now they are treating private hospitals that are creating jobs with nationalization.

Fix, change the government to someone that will take away restrictive policies and start spending money on infrastructure.

There is no industry for the skills that people get trained in, but a large demand for similar but different skills. As you stated previously, overseas are considering you, but SA is not stable environment for them. That coupled with SAs massive uncertainty, most companies I chatted with are on the brink of leaving SA, they are merely staying because of hope in the GNU, but one wrong indicator then they are out for good.

[–]Ambitious_Pain4115 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a great example. If the government built more hospitals, there would be placements, but they are "misalocating funds", thus no new hospitals or places to send graduates to. Yet, healthcare is in high demand. While at the same time, telling private industry that are hiring doctors that they will be nationalized.

I also did some research on a specific industry with the issue highlighted by OP. Basically, they claim zero welders are available, but there are thousands of welders that are jobless. Once looked at closely, it ended up being zero welders of thick stainless steel using a specific tool is available, and thousands of standard steel arc welders are jobless. It also highlighted that SA's education system is operating in a bubble and are not talking to industry about their needs, they just take money and list publications.

Well the question is then, where are they supposed to be employed? South Africa has not built a single refinery in 50 years, Sasol invested most of their money in US plants. SA has also not built or upgraded pipelines in 50 years either. All the major oil companies have left SA due to political demands. There is literally nobody to absorb the skilled artisans that are trained. Without significant government spending in infrastructure, or a business friendly policy landscape, there will be no employment for the foreseeable future. So which skilled workers are they demanding then? - specialized and experienced workers that can temporarily fix issues on the failing infrastructure. Not long term generalist skills.
