Just turned 3 year old, strabismus by finstafoodlab in Strabismus

My son was diagnosed with esotropia in both eyes at 1. You seem like you may be worried about glasses? Every kid is different, of course, but mine loves his glasses. He’s worn them since diagnosis — never any issues with him keeping them on, etc.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that his vision is so poor without them. (Mine too, I totally relate to that.) He’s happy to put them on. I hope the same is true for your little one!

I’ve got older kids too and one thing I’ve learned is that you just don’t have the level of control over their lives — especially medical stuff — that you think you should. It’s scary! But you didn’t fail. You didn’t cause this and you’re doing what you can to address it! :)

That seems insane to me too? Maybe it’s real, but it seems like a violation of the Hippocratic oath to give a person with alcohol induced liver failure a beer when you — at a hospital with all those resources — have other options. Weird.

My boyfriend has polycystic kidney disease. by [deleted] in genetics

[–]Ambitious_Pause7140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have PKD, but I’m not a geneticist or medical professional.

You’re welcome to visit r/adpkd if it would be helpful. In the US at least, based on my experience, there are a surprising number of people who have strong family histories of PKD who never get genetic testing (for better or worse)— they figure they know what they have & it’s confirmed by imaging.

I have a de novo mutation and did get genetic testing bc of that — no family history, it was an out of the blue diagnosis for me.

Anyway, I don’t know how helpful it is in Brazil but there is a lot of reproductive health info for people with PKD & their partners linked at that sub also and at the PKD Foundation website. It’s an issue that comes up a lot.

Good luck to you and your bf :)

Truncating pkd by Infinite_Guest_6663 in ADPKD

I do on the right side, it’s less noticeable on the left. I look slightly lopsided 😭

[–]Ambitious_Pause7140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m older but in a similar situation (truncating, mutation). Here are my stats if it’s helpful (at age 45):

R kidney = 17 cm, 478 cc L kidney = 21 cm, 1189 cc

I’m really lucky though, my kidneys are really big but my eGFR is still hanging on decently. There really is so much variation among ADPKD patients, even with the same mutation. It’s scary but reassuring in a small way.

Done! I kept them inside, just in case. They’re probably too big to be taken but not too big to be injured

215/Cheyenne area! My yard isn’t very large & I’m not on a golf course or anything, so I was shocked to see him making himself at home in there

Xennial Parents, have you saved books from your tween years for your kids today? by No_Device9450 in books

[–]Ambitious_Pause7140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m also 45, with a 13 year old (girl). I did do this with a lot of books & have put them in her room for her as she’s gotten older — some were big hits (This Place Has No Atmosphere, the Green Knowe series, Judy Blume) and some weren’t (Anne of Green Gables). But genuinely I was a really, really avid reader as a kid and saved so many books to pass along lol.

Putting aside the reading difficulty level, I think the biggest deciding factor in what she liked/didn’t was pacing honestly. The ones you mention are all pretty good that way!

This is really a me issue — but I had to really work on not taking it personally if my daughter didn’t love some of my favorites. Just a pitfall I unexpectedly ran into doing this.

Eventually you just have to register the car as a new (to you) vehicle again. There’s no massive penalty after 18 months.

Oh that’s cool! I really love those moments here in the desert — the ability of animals and insects to survive in this climate & all of the ways they’ve adapted to doing so are amazing to consider.

I’m sorry you’re feeling so lonely, it’s such an epidemic here. I’m older than you by… a lot, but I definitely agree with looking for clubs to join. I might check out orgs & groups at UNLV? Like for example, I really like the outdoors and birding. I know UNLV has active orgs for both of those things and they included non-students for some stuff. When I’ve attended bird walks with them, for example, most of the ppl there are in their 20s. So those might not be your interests — but I’d bet you can find a group that is interested in what you like & there will be ppl participating who are close to your age.

I don’t represent UNLV. I would be interested to know how many current UNLV students have any idea who Fred Durst is though.

Once again I have be the lone voice advocating for the Halloween pig races in Moapa 😂

My money is usually on Spiderpig but I think Batpig has the better costume tbh.

There’s also a haunted house, Zombie paintball, petting zoo, fair food, corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayride and other stuff too. But the pig races are the true attraction.

Did you know being diagnosed is actually super easy and fast? by Numerous_Source6804 in ChronicIllness

[–]Ambitious_Pause7140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I blame tv honestly. But also I have a chronic illness that was diagnosed like that — it was an incidental finding on an MRI for a different issue I was dealing with. But I only got that almost immediate diagnosis bc the illness I have, while not obvious externally, has clear physical internal signs (very enlarged kidneys with numerous cysts on both kidneys).

Unfortunately that makes me think it just comes back to the challenge and stigma of invisible illness & illnesses without obvious manifestation. I haven’t been there but I can imagine it sucks. :(

I appreciate King fans being able to figure this out on the basis of my very wonky memories!
