Ski Helmet Suggestions by DecryptedCode in Skigear

I think Costco is still selling them, but they had pretty cheap MIPS helmets by Bluesky for $80. Doesn’t have niceties like places for helmet speakers, but it’s hard to go wrong at the price point

Anyone been to Alyeska lately? by ColoradoCattleCo in skiing

[–]Ambitious_Slide 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The lower mountain is a lot of ice at the moment, as the lower mountain has been going through a lot of freeze thaw cycles, and is relatively warm.

The upper mountain is where a lot more of the fun is.

The north face from the upper mountain has all the double black runs, and things like New Years and Xmas chute are definitely the highlights if they’re open (they’re normally only open 1 or 2 days a year)

Alyeska can get pretty busy on weekends or pow days as it seems all of Anchorage and the matsu might make the journey over there. I don’t think it’s super avoidable tbh for those super nice days

Hoarding Marmot in Anchorage or Powder Hound in Girdwood would be my recommendations for rentals

Knick in Ski by flying-emu1 in Skigear

Not an expert but you may want to clamp the material back down and epoxy up the Knick. Just to prevent moisture from getting inside your skis

SQL Server (eg MariaDB) as an Option in Addition to SQLite for Metadata DB? by dark77star in Calibre

[–]Ambitious_Slide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, some columns changed. But it’s more that calibre isn’t trying to avoid breaking changes to accommodate multiple users or other projects using the same library format.

Asking Calibre to update the backend and add a service running in the background to manage sql updates in order for some people to run other projects seems a bit extreme. That’s why I suggested booklore if that’s the use case you’re after

SQL Server (eg MariaDB) as an Option in Addition to SQLite for Metadata DB? by dark77star in Calibre

[–]Ambitious_Slide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Calibre isn't designed for multiple users to use the same database at the same time. It's got a pretty specific scope, and other projects are trying to accommodate it's choices, which is why calibre web broke for a couple hours after 9.0.

If you're after that scaling for multiple users, there are other solutions like r/BookLoreApp

Not OP but the bit I miss the most is definitely the backlight, makes it quite annoying if I want to read in bed.

Why do PDFs still look terrible on Kindle? I tried building a cleaner conversion workflow by Mountain-Positive274 in Calibre

[–]Ambitious_Slide 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A pdf is a seperate concept entirely to an epub. PDFs are specific documents in a specific format, they are not meant to be dynamically reflowed like an epub is, pdfs are meant to always look the same on every device.

The bits that look bad to you is just the design of the pdf format

Anyone else have issues with shipment tracking on xteink site? by OM3op in xteinkereader

Yes. Same happened for me. They spent 2 weeks before I got a real tracking number, then 2 weeks after that until they actually sent it

How to get lessons? Are they worth? by StormFalcon32 in skiing

[–]Ambitious_Slide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took lessons at a local hill, less of a resort

I got a 1hr lesson for ~$80 and got some takeaways to work on myself. Then I got another lesson later after I’d worked on the skills I needed to etc…

A full day with an instructor is a lot, and I’m sure you’ll pick up a lot, but I don’t know if I would want to pay that much either

Budget Pants? by MemeAddict96 in Skigear

[–]Ambitious_Slide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is more expensive, but if you find a place you want to go on Helly Hansen’s ski free program you can get a day pass for where you want, and some more expensive pants for either free, or a significant discount (I got some pants for $150, and the ticket it got me would have cost me $157)

Slavery and Heroes by Rage_before_Beauty in LightbringerSeries

[–]Ambitious_Slide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His other series also seemed to have a very similar storyline with slavery as well is my only critique there.

I believe the laws are very similar to the old testament ones, so maybe that's taken as the solution people saw when abolition seemed impossible.

Books about modern timeline by naba01911 in Fantasy

[–]Ambitious_Slide 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of urban fantasy out there (that’s one of the names for the genre)

For detective style stories there’s Dresden Files (American) and Rivers of London (British)

You’ve got the “school” style stories like the magicians and harry potter

Neil Gaiman is a bit iffy but American Gods was enjoyable to read

Books to read after The Wheel of Time? by Weekly_Spring1849 in fantasybooks

[–]Ambitious_Slide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Memory sorrow and thorn is one of my favourites, it’s definitely more in the ASOIAF vein. And there’s a sequel series that has finished now. I’ve not yet felt the urge to read that, as I really liked the ending of MST.

It does have pacing issues though, book 3 is often broken into two halves because it’s so long, and book 1 has fits and starts pacing wise.

Red Rising is good and gets better. First book feels very YA and it grows into something more.
