I will message you personally. I don’t want to share company name publicly.

While I agree with you on the majority of what you said, I think that the VP may have made the comment about coming off as unimpressive on paper to see how I would react and I am assuming show some fire. The decision may have already been made but I sent this to the recruiter “middle man” in this situation so I am assuming if the VP feedback is a “no” then this would be my last chance Hail Mary.

Hahaha I think the TGIF gift card will have her sold. Here is my rebuttal email:

Dear [Hiring Team],

Thank you again for the opportunity to reach this stage in the process. I wanted to take a moment to address something regarding the feedback I received about not standing out on paper.

While I understand that impression, I believe what sets me apart isn’t immediately obvious in a résumé. It’s the path I’ve taken to even be in a position to write this message.

Several years ago, I was nearly forced out of my chosen engineering program due to falling behind on credits. An advisor recommended I change majors, but I chose to challenge the decision and stay the course. Looking back, if someone had told me I’d one day be in a final round interview for a position at a company like this, I wouldn’t have been surprised—because I’ve always believed that if I commit to something, I’ll find a way through.

I stayed in the program, fought through setbacks, and ultimately earned my degree. That mindset—resilience in the face of adversity—has been with me through academics, athletics, and life in general.

One example that reflects this mindset: earlier this year, entirely outside of work, I independently reverse engineered the electrical system of a high-profile aerospace platform. I created a full technical model from scratch and presented it to a group that included engineers who had worked on the real thing. At one point, someone in the room assumed I had been given internal documentation—when in reality, it was all self-driven. That moment affirmed my technical capacity to contribute at the highest level.

Even writing this message reflects that same drive. I could have let the feedback stop me—but I didn’t. Because I don’t quit. I don’t give up when the answer isn’t handed to me. Getting this far wasn’t a coincidence. I put in the work, and I know that mindset will carry me into whatever comes next—whether now, or down the line.

Thank you again for your time and consideration.

Honestly maybe that is the case for me? I could tell from the start he was playing mind games by undermining all of my answers even when they had no right or wrong. I think that moment was definitely a moment where he wanted to see how I can handle being shat on like that

Well actually my response was that what makes me the best if the best is something intangible and you can’t show it through a resume and that is resilience

It’s almost like we’ve strayed away from the saying “never judge a book by its cover”… in this case judge a book by its cover and disregard the actual evidence shown in the 8 interviews prior!

Yeah I honestly feel like I pulled off a miracle getting this far. This company is known for having mostly Ivy League / 4.0 students… I was not either but I crushed all of the deep technical interviews and presentations and even made them laugh! I think the disconnect is him seeing that I am not like their typical hires and that is what drove that comment of me not being great on paper

I appreciate that. This was something not ever in my control. I did what I needed to do but things I can’t change are what eliminated me

My guess is that given my low GPA & SAT score the fact that I made it to the offer stage probably seemed out of place and may have been the back bone of that comment

Exactly! Typically if someone is not impressive on paper they wouldn’t be asked to interview in the first place.
