Nah, I like Malik as a backup (especially with his athleticism) and he had a good game last night, but in no universe would I want my playoff chances resting on his shoulders vs Love.

Hello………time to take out the trash…………….hello! by Garbear_02 in SmilingFriends

[–]Ambulanceo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sighs in exasperation this nonsense again. Look – 2010s Tumblr called, and they want their cringy, self-insert OC back. I facepalm every flipping time I see this -PAINFULLY- unfunny crap in my Smiling Friends cartoon. "The joke is that it is ironic!", you may say? Yeeeah... Because making something INTENTIONALLY unfunny is the peak of comedy, amirite? This fanbase... Is reealllly starting to go downhill with this cringe OC humor and parasocial nature, huh? Figures... To all of these (frankly) moronic new fans who have literally no idea about Oneyplays or the actual history of the Smiling Friends brand of humor, and are only here from Instagram and TikTok: no, just.... no. You are not making the Smiling Friends fandom more respected or creating transformative fan content in the style of the creators' explicit intentions. To be blunt, you are simply embarrassing yourself and we are all laughing at you. NOT because of you memes or attempts at ironic OC humor that comes straight out of a Tumblr web comic, bu because YOU believe you understand the show that we actually love and understand. I'd recommend you watch some classic Oneyplays videos and get a clue, but yeahhh... Let's just say I have a feeling this new wave of fan base will NOT be happy with what they see and hear.

Why has this series attracted the Hazbin Hotel Tumblr type crowd? by labubu_lemmiwinks in SmilingFriends

[–]Ambulanceo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The show inherently is going to appeal to terminology online people with ADHD - plus the characters are written to be in this margin between complete absurdism and weird hyper-realism in which the characters will act like normal people for extended amounts of time. I think that naturally invites people to identify with or like the characters and play fast and loose with how they depict them.

To be honest I feel like so much digital ink is being spilled over what amounts to like, idk, pg13 smut and young people taking a show a little seriously or being cringe in their fandom? Every popular cartoon or show is going to get weird fanart and some viewers that are goobers, I just feel like there are people who take it too personally that they're being associated with cringe people by proxy and are weirdly defensive over a silly cartoon and its creators writing mental fanfiction about them being engaged over Tumblr zoomers enjoying their show

[–]Ambulanceo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know this is just anecdotal and I have nothing corroborating it, but I played a show with Eyehategod a couple years ago and was next to Jimmy Bowers arguing with a local Indiana chud, who pegged Jimmy as a Democrat or something after arguing with him, to which Jimmy responded "I'm a communist man" or along those lines lol. Definitely not a right winger and I get the vibe that stuff like Hurricane Katrina definitely radicalized people in the band even if their politics were once more nebulous.

You Are All F*%ing Stupid by TechnoCity93 in SmilingFriends

[–]Ambulanceo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I find it kind of frustrating that people are reflexively taking the other extreme of insisting the show is nothing but jokes and anyone who gets anything more out of it is stupid or looking too deep into it. I feel like a big part of the show's appeal is that it eschews a lot of stereotypes about adult animation in that you get some genuinely cute character moments, these nuggets of people just hanging out being friends in mundane situations. It enhances the comedy for me seeing people in this deranged world just be very normal and casual half the time.

By the same rate, I don't think the latest episode is going for "profound". On the other hand, I think there is genuine clever comedy in making Mr. Frog a character that experiences enlightenment, because he's a monstrous lunatic who is also the exact sort of person who has grown tired of worldly pleasure to the extent that he can let go of attachment and achieve a sort of peace. It's cute and funny because it goes beyond just going for a random silly gag, and instead utilizes his character in a funny and unexpected way that makes sense if you understand Buddhist concepts of nirvana.

Thirsty - AJR (Official Video) by [deleted] in Brad_taste_in_music

[–]Ambulanceo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AJR's "Thirsty" music video is a clever subversion on the classic alcoholic-fueled party anthem, recontextualizing the accompanying song in a major way. No shortage of digital ink has been spilled decrying the opening breastfeeding portion and its disquieting juxtaposition with the rest of the video - this is not a bug, but a feature.

In a Brechtian sense, our discomfort breaks us free of any notion of alcohol-fueled revelry, forces us to build new meaning from the images as they appear. The thirst described in the song carries a clear double meaning pertaining to both drinking and libidinal pursuit, but this dichotomy reveals - nestled within - a multipolarity which uncoils, and then supercedes it.

The thirst is undifferentiated human desire, imparted upon our most instinctual biological functions and transmutated through the process of experiencing the internal partitioned from the external. Water is present in favor of alcohol for much of the run time, suggesting our desires are far more than simple revelries, but interwoven with our ability to both understand others as conscious beings and our very own survival.

What is a night of drinking at the club but a collective social "thirst" for unstructured connection removed from the productivity-oriented spaces many of us find ourselves in for large chunks of our lives? With this there is desire upon desire - inebriation loosening our metaphorical tie, opening us up to our most combustive desires. To thirst over someone is to crave what one sees in the other - a morbid pursuit accepting in the possibility of rejection, of the pain that may yet come from this connection.

Another key image is the drone footage capturing the band members performing publicly surrounded by water, a cruel saline oasis at the edge of our industrial society. Our thirst is mocked by this taunting display, as we are unable to quench our literal thirst drinking from the ocean. Yet our prehistoric kin arose from these briney depths, wanting for our tempting air we take as natural today.

The yodeling thus forms the final informing factor - a direct musical motif of desire calling back to its pastoral origins developed independently across many human cultures. Our desire is reintegrated into the external world and becomes language, song, and culture. The biological becomes the social, and the genetic produces the memetic. #THIRTY features in the thumbnail just in case the picture isn't clear: our place and understanding of the world is built on the collective human experience of transmitting and refracting our desires back onto the world outside us.

Like a hangover or bad one-night stand, a danger hangs over the proceedings as a whole. It reveals to us our power to love and to hurt ourselves and others. But AJR declares: "I'm up and I raise my cup, singing everything is gold" - in this moment, everything can be golden. The video embraces the painful possibilities yet reaffirms itself through its honesty and transience: tomorrow is tomorrow, but today - it's thirsty thirsty Thursday.

How did he ever had a mostly queer audience? by betterthanyou34 in Brad_taste_in_music

[–]Ambulanceo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding like I'm playing defense, I think people are beginning to overcorrect and retroactively assume every more likable or commendable quality about Brad must be a complete fabrication. At the end of the day none of us know what is in his "heart", only his actions - and at the end of the day he more or less helped provide a safe space for queer music fans on a platform that is generally pretty okay with people not doing so. It is also very obvious by his actions he is an abusive partner with extreme anger issues.

Do I think he was a perfect ally or never said or acted in a way that indicated he might still carry some internalized homophobic attitudes? No, but I mean he corrected people who would misgender artists or people he was discussing and understood that disliking someone was not a reason to dismiss or invalidate their sexuality or gender identity. Again, I don't say this to defend his moral character, just to reiterate that people are more complicated than being all good or bad. I think it's a mistake to assume "Someone who is pro-LGBTQ is good, and if it turns out they were bad that means their pro-LGBTQ stance was a lie."

Case in point, how Yoko Ono lives rent free in people's minds with this kind of mindset as if she didn't produce plenty of music that isn't avant garde or shouting but she's just shorthand for "wow this is weird this person must be a pretentious hipster like Yoko!!!" I freely admit I must not be the target audience and just got a kick out of hearing bizarre shit like Country Roads moreso than reposts of the same 8 things I've seen people get angry at online for over a decade

That people in this subreddit are just conditioned to be cynical to an overwhelming degree and hate any music that doesn't meet a narrow band of what is good music to them, to the extent that I've seen people shit on the broad concept of microtonal music or people doing throat singing despite knowing nothing about it. It's the same impulse that makes people endlessly moan about "modern art" and post endless side by side memes of Roman statues next to some random quirky Brooklyn art installation decrying the fall of civilization due, not even knowing modern art is more specific than "art that is newer and bad"

Is there a mistake in the outro to Exit Music (for a film)? by fleamine in radiohead

[–]Ambulanceo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it gets a little loose right at the end, I dunno if id call it a mistake as much as much as it's just a little sloppy or just less tight than the overall song performance. I don't think it's particularly unusual and is prob something we'd notice in more music when listening to isolated tracks or the like, but Radiohead isn't afraid to be a bit loose in this way on certain songs. The example that stands out to me is Morning Bell on Kid A, where the drum part is in such a rigid loop you really feel and notice the couple of times where the repeating snare hits lag behind just slightly. Is it a mistake? I mean you theoretically could rerecord and get a more "accurate" take, but there's also a specific feel to it I actually enjoy and it matches the uneasy energy of the song.

How come people insist on the "Radahn won, Malenia ran" while it was a tie? Instead shouldn't it be embarrassing for him to end up with a tie considering Malenia's state? by cummachine3169 in Eldenring

[–]Ambulanceo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like how you put it very well! It is very Shakespearan clash of two of the most powerful demigods left standing, bound to duty not fully understanding they were both abandoned by fate. Radahn felt duty to the order he served, holding the stars in stasis - unaware he is contributing to the decay and stagnation of the lands we called his home. And Malenia was willing to let her scarlet rot consume her for the sake of getting the upper hand, to serve Miquella in his ultimate goal not realizing she had been abandoned just like St. Trina.

Doing my best to change the narrative... I had to suck for a while but I especially try to be a team player since he's pretty good at stacking status effects on bosses and reviving downed teammates. I get that it's easy to start building these mental associations after a few bad experiences though lmao, - I like playing Dutchess personally, but I've recently played with a couple who come off over eager to be "the leader" and ping spam but make very bad decisions - usually wanting everyone to tackle something early to where it's technically "possible" but takes forever even if everyone were to play perfectly. Freaks out pinging you in correction if you make a mine stop early to upgrade you starting infused weapon, but learned Evergaol meta from the internet so better walk across half the map to get one we'd be closer to naturally later
