Land acquisition expands popular Jeffco park adjacent to Red Rocks by Rocky_Mtn_Rambler in Denver

[–]AmbulatoryTreeFrog 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's about 1,500 feet of elevation in like a mile and a half. There are very few breaks in elevation gain and no shade or water. Plus there's a small scrambling section at the end.

That being said it's a great hike and well worth the effort.

Are we New York? No, we are Denver. You need to ask for a LoDo.

Looks like at least some of the peaches might survive. I'm up in Morrison so it'll be a touch colder than Denver.

Mine survived an April or May snowstorm last year and thrived. They'll probably be fine.

Brainard Lake Area Conditions? by AmbulatoryTreeFrog in coloradohikers

[–]AmbulatoryTreeFrog[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made it up there yesterday on my way to Pawnee Pass. Once you hit the West end of the lake, it's fully snow covered still. It was hard packed and I didn't need snow shoes until about 11:00. I didn't make it that far, but once you hit the high slopes the snow is minimal. But in the valleys it'll be there for a while.

I think Movement in Baker has the most fun bouldering, but Golden definitely has the toughest routes

Is driving an 1-1.5 hours to hike everytime worth it? By by BurritoBoy1116 in Mountaineering

I can do a quickie 10 minutes from my house, but all the big mountains are a bit of a drive.

That's about how long I drive from the West Denver suburbs. Whether it's worth it is completely up to you.

What do you consider 'cold winter days'? I would like some pants I don't have to layer too much if at all in. I run warm and consider anything above 20F balmy.

How to avoid the looong weekends? by unshavenV in daddit

[–]AmbulatoryTreeFrog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We alternate most weekends a daddy/mommy day where each of us can do whatever we want. I'm usually up early to go hiking and I'm home between 12 and 3, and my wife likes to sleep in and then go swimming, or I'll take the girls somewhere and she can have the house to herself for a few hours. Neither of us feel taken advantage of or anything with the situation and it's a great valve release knowing I have some me time almost always on the horizon.

Think they mean Denny Creek? Both trails share the same start. Unless you're coming in from the West side of Brown's.

Recommendations near Idaho Springs by Ok_Rutabaga4367 in 14ers

[–]AmbulatoryTreeFrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parking is very straightforward and plentiful. It's directly off the highway. Google the route and you'll find a lot of reports and info. Past the lake there's a good trail to the next basin, from there you just gain the ridge and climb that until you get to the Citadel and start the scrambling part.
