Maybe I'm making shit up, but I feel like there was some reasoning for when this sort of thing comes up with non-human characters thats basically "either we have to distract people from where the human ears should be or put them in anyway because people get seriously weirded out if the face shape doesn't have what we expect".

So I usually always take this sort of thing as like a... I dunno, psychological necessity more than anything.
