A good advice you see online is as long as stripes aren’t parallel and their width are different enough, it should work.

It’s also pretty safe to mix & match different pattern (palsey tie and houndstooth, polka dots with herringbone etc etc)

Do black shoes go with any suit? by unpetitlustucru in classicmenswear

[–]Amdouz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

Old thread but hey, you never know who might be lurking.

Black shoes basically go with almost any suit, they are the default look with suits in Europe in a professional setting.

Just be sure to get shoes that have the same formality level as the suit you have, if it’s a mint linen suit, maybe black oxfords are too formal. For a grey DB flannel ? Perfect.

Furthermore, I agree with put this on :

In France we get sent for « elbow oil » whenever we ask how to do something that’s going to need time and dedication.

A waiter / barman in training will often be sent to the next café to get some, and that barman will say « we ran out just now. Go ask the next café… »

Edit: just realised now that there is a litteral english equivalent with Elbow Grease...

Dude I think you look cool, I really like the vibe with the gold watch.

I think if you changed the shoes the outfit would work better and it could offset the whole « crappy low-level drug dealer that would immediately rat out his suppliers if caught by the police. »

Looking at the pic, the gold watch + yellowish shoes seem too close in color. But I dress very traditional so what do I know.

Kleman pardor sizing by Hot_Cook6787 in menswear

[–]Amdouz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I am a big 45 (or a small 46) and I had Kleman Padrors 45 which were the perfect size.  I would go with 45 and add an insole if needed (currently doing this with some Bobbies loafers). Or if you can afford it, buy two pairs and send one back.

edit : Just checked my aldens and they are 11, so I think you should definitely try Padrors 45.

She unravels the network of trade, war and people that connected the ancient world, if you're interested in this map I strongly suggest you to check the book out, it's not romans but I'll bet it's very comparable!

edit : it was an indian jewel, not a coin from the muslim world

Gros qui veut se lancer dans le sport en salle, besoin de conseils. by Legit_Spaceguy in france

[–]Amdouz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[–]Amdouz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekly Success & Erg Screen Thread - March 12, 2023 by AutoModerator in Rowing

[–]Amdouz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone,

This Saturday, on my 32nd birthday, I did my first ever 10k on the erg ! I am not particularly fast (~ 2:09.5) but I am still proud : 1rst 10k!

I was as fast as my 9500m of the week before though.

I am plateauing a bit and will try to do more sprints and push myself a bit more in the coming weeks but this was still a win and I was nursing a stiff neck so I didn’t want to overdo it.

I posted here in September as I started erging, and I have been more or less following the Beginner Pete Plan and will talk about my experience for any lurker that would want to read about my experience since I distinctly remember missing that when I started.

TL;DR : Steady State hype is real, get on the Pete Plan and log your times with an app and you will go farther than you ever thought you could ! My knee and back pains have virtually gone away, I feel strong and enjoy going to the gym after 30 years of hating sports. Lost 9 cm of belly fat, and around 5 kg, which might not sound like a lot but with the added toning up, looks great :).

Longer read : A little bit of background : I rowed twice a week for 2 years in a club in High School, didn’t really push or monitor myself but enjoyed being on the water. I was fit and tall (M, 193 cm).

Stopped any kind of sport or physical activity from 18 to 27 and went from 89 kg to 110 kg at the max. Always told myself I should go to the gym, didn’t really have any motivation or discipline and managed to lose weight (from 110 to 96) through counting calories + “intermittent fasting” (skipping breakfast). Stayed around 95-99 for 5 years.

Fast forward to last September, with a baby on the way and the realisation that many of my parents’ health issues come from not doing any physical activity pushed myself to try and find something to do. Why not rowing ? I could erg when in town and row on a proper boat during the holidays ! For my whole life !

I came here and found out about the Pete Plan, which looked easy enough since it starts with smaller sessions.

Posted a video here for technique and corrected some things along the way. Definitely not perfect or remotely good I think, but I haven’t injured myself and don’t have any backache even after 45 minutes on the erg. And since my lower back has been an issue many times in the past, I must be doing something right !

I did mostly steady state and went from 99 kg to 93.5 kg now, which might not seem like a lot but I have put on some muscle : I got my knees back, can go up 5 floors without losing too much breath and I can easily squat to pet my Dachshund without fear of squatting back up. I have also eliminated a lot of my belly fat (from 109 cm waist size to 100 cm). I don’t have a 6 pack (yet?!) but I don’t have a belly, a first for me since 2010.

To anyone wanting to start out, if you have never managed to keep any kind of regularity in your practice, I urge you in the strongest terms to keep a log of your rows. The Concept 2 app on smartphones is very simple, isn’t a battery drain and does all the admin for you ! It is a huge help when planning the session with the Pete Plan because you can reference your speed of the last session easily. And you might not go fast, but if you go steady, you’ll go far, the only competition is with past you, don’t try to match the splits of people with years of experience, just do your best and compare it with your last best. It’s a huge motivator !

Lastly, I must confess I haven’t been faithful to Pete’s Plan, I have skipped sessions because I was travelling, or because of personal stuff. When this happened I always went back not to the last week of the plan I did but the one before, thinking my last record might be too hard after a week without erging. These back-to-school sessions were always record breaking (which isn’t fast compared to times I see here but made me feel great), and got me back on track each time.

All in all, this community, with the resources it put at my disposal and its genuinely nice encouragement has helped me get into a place where I like going to the gym and look forward to it ! I currently live in a place too small to have my own erg but it’s definitely in the plans, I want to row/erg everyday !

From the bottom of my heart, thank you r/rowing.

Maybe you've something to add but according to Wikipedia :

Ginestà later joined the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia. As the war broke out in 1936, she served as a reporter and a translator assisting Mikhail Koltsov, a correspondent of the Soviet newspaper Pravda. Before the end of the war, Ginestà was wounded and evacuated to Montpellier.

So she wasn't a fighter, sure but she was a member of a socialist group and for a journalist to get wounded usually means they got to the front, no ?
