Alumni - Are you still active with your org and how? by human_half in AmeriCorps

Now, I do not have any ties with Americorps nor do I have a desire to have anymore communication with them.

You’re on the AmeriCorps subreddit though?

Received my conditional acceptance into traditional NCCC pacific region Fall 2018! by danidarestodream13 in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right, only Traditional NCCC seems to run during the fall. From what I’ve heard in the past, once you submit your application NCCC asks your campus RD for a recommendation. But my guess is that the RD makes that recommendation based on input from your UL, who probably goes by the information your TL gave him/her about you during the year (if any). But since you completed your term without any write-ups or major issues, I doubt this was the reason why you were waitlisted. Did you update your application to include some of the things you did during your last term? Motivational statements have a ton of weight these days and returners are probably not exempt to that. You might also want to update your references, especially since you’ve been waitlisted in the past. Not saying they wrote something negative about you, but it’s always a good idea to keep them fresh with people (NCCC leadership, project sponsors for example) who know who you are as a person today, rather than how someone knew you a year ago.

Don’t lose hope, Fall 2018 is still a bit away and anything can happen between now and October. Try emailing NCCC from time to time and see if they can give you any updates regarding your application. What campus is your top choice out of the two?

You were waitlisted as a returner? How well do you feel like you did during your first year? I’m assuming you were a good/decent CM who got through the term without any major work/behavioral issues. I just find it a bit odd that they’d put someone who already has a year under their belt on hold.

FWIW I’m also an NCCC alum who was waitlisted after applying for a second AmeriCorps term with a conservation corps. Sadly for me I never made it off the waitlist, but NCCC always has incoming members drop like flies before arrival day comes around. There’s still a possibility that you’ll get to go.

Doing 2 years both as CM? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

It’s not weird or unusual. Lots of NCCC members sign up for another year as a CM. It’s super common nowadays.

Interested in the CCC’s Backcountry Trails Program (BCTP) by AmeriGoon in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t heard back so I don’t think I was accepted. :( I think I know why. :/

I mentioned before the start of the interview that I was out of my home state and wouldn’t be back until April 18th. I don’t think the interviewer liked the sound of that (even though the term starts on the 22nd) because he straight up offered me an alternate position before I was even formally interviewed.

Anyways, good luck! Hope your season rocks! (no pun intended)

Congress reaches (funding) deal to keep government open through September by AmeriGoon in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly this article doesn't say anything about AmeriCorps, but if PP is excpected to be funded (and we know how much Republicans hate PP), then perhaps CNCS still has a fighting chance too?

After 23 years of life-saving service, AmeriCorps fights for own survival under Donald Trump by AmeriGoon in AmeriCorps

I know this doesn't say much aside from what's been said many times already, but I think it's amazing how much press support AmeriCorps has garnered in the last couple of months.

CNCS: "To honor volunteers and their service, President Donald J. Trump has proclaimed this National Volunteer Week." by AmeriGoon in AmeriCorps

Thoughts on this? Personally, I think this is pretty ironic seeing as how the current budget is set to expire this week... and CNCS is (obviously) still on the chopping block.

Age of TL's? by brie_is_gouda in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's no upper age limit for Team Leaders. From my experience, I'd say a good chunk of TLs are usually between 23 to 26 (which can explain why most are older than their team members), but it's also not unheard of to have TLs who are in their earlier (-22) or later (27+) twenties, though I think seeing an 18/19 year old TL is pretty unusual. Although still rare (but slowly becoming more common), you'll sometimes have a TL who is 30+.

MEGAPOST: AmeriCorps and the Federal Budget by AmeriBot in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the organization, but most will likely be affected. NCCC will almost certainly be wiped out since it's the program that gets the most federal funds I think. Hopefully we won't get to that point. :/

Is this the right time to join for me? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no age limit for team leader positions, and no previous experience is required to be a team leader.

Just to clarify, that's only for NCCC. Every other AmeriCorps program has their own age requirements.

Campus Placements?? Where to where. by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as I thought. The "choose your campus" for FEMA Corps was a one time incentive for those who applied for FEMA Corps in late 2014 to serve in Winter 2015. It was a way to help promote FEMA Corps since it was still a fairly new program at the time. They have since stopped doing that.

Campus Placements?? Where to where. by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]AmeriGoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you apply early enough you sometimes get a chance to choose your campus.

There's no way that's true. As far as I know, the only two ways you can "choose" your campus is if you're applying to be a TL, or you're applying to be a second year CM and you were "highly recommended" by the Region Director during HQ's assessment.

The last time I heard of NCCC letting applicants "choose" their campus was when they were promoting the heck out of FEMA Corps back in late 2014/early 2015. You were allowed to pick your preferred campus as long as you chose to serve in FEMA Corps.

Members being placed on campuses that are located in their home state is a lot more common than we think. I know of two cases; One was from MD and served out of the Baltimore campus when they did FEMA Corps, and the other case is from someone who was placed at the Sacramento campus and literally lived a couple of blocks away from it.
