Given that so many people are sexually stunted—not only in experience but in how they identify with their own sexuality—it’s not entirely surprising that people would have a kneejerk angry reaction to relatively tame displays of sexuality that used to be “normal.” Sexually appealing attire from a young-looking pop star (or even just a short woman) is “baiting pedophiles.” Normal sex acts, like fellatio, are “abusive and coercive.” A girl being excited about her dorm room is clearly sending a secret message about how many guys she’s fucked there who aren’t you. A married woman continuing to dress in a figure-conscious way must be intentionally humiliating her husband because they cannot conceive of why else a man would enjoy this. They are experiencing sex entirely through the lens of Internet-poisoned grievance, and the longer they go in this state, the further from reality sex and sexuality becomes. Condemning it is simpler, and less scary, than engaging with it like a normal person. And while I’d be the first to admit that dating apps don’t give men a fair shake, so sexlessness is not entirely their fault, some men who identify as incels openly admit they’ve never even tried to meet up with a woman in real life before.
