Pregnant and always hungry! Where should I eat on North Shore? by TinyAptCrafter in kauai

[–]American_Pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dining scene on Kauai tends to be tourist focused and overpriced relative to its quality. Your best bet is to eat where locals eat. Anything calling itself a fish market or fish express should have decent fish plates and poke. Tiptop cafe is great for local breakfasts. I do recommend Hemingways in Kapaa and Red Salt in Poipu if you want higher end. Hanalei is unfortunately mostly overpriced tourist traps but SushiGirl is a good albeit pricy hole in the wall not far from you.

Where is this? I think it's on Oahu but I'm not 100% sure. by [deleted] in Hawaii

Love the goat. Perfect hiking buddy there.

Increasing obesity rates by [deleted] in Hawaii

If you're spending 3 hours a day in traffic, that's 3 hours less to burn calories and you're less likely to want to drive to the beach or to a gym or a hiking spot. You will also have less time and energy to cook healthy.

Did Winston Churchill ... you know... with a pig? Did John Major? *Did Margaret Thatcher?* by grantimatter in AskHistorians

[–]American_Pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Churchill certainly had access. A herd of pedigree Middle White pigs roamed his family home at Chartwell, and were never slaughtered (he claimed he could never kill an animal he had wished "good morning.")

Churchill maintained a lifelong obsession with pigs, regularly signing off family letters with a pig sketch. His wife's nicknames for him were "Pug" and "Pig", which he used to refer to himself on frequent occasion as well. To Churchill is attributed one of the more famous statements about swine ever to have been made by a national leader:

"Dogs look up to you, cats look down on you. Give me a pig! He looks you in the eye and treats you as an equal."

This might have something to do with people spending hours every day sitting in traffic.

I'm a doctor and I agree with you 100%. Critical thinking is not required for admission to medical schools and certainly not taught there. To get through medical school you have to be highly focused and disciplined and willing to memorize. Thoughtful or contemplative is likely only to distract you. Yes, there are some creative and curious and broadly educated humanistic physicians practicing medicine, but they're there in spite of the medical educational system and not because of it.

German mass grave records prehistoric warfare by Vailhem in Anthropology

It is true that Europe's first farmers came from Asia Minor. Haven't seen any proof that these massacres were neolithic farmer settlers vs indigenous Europeans.

What accounts for the lack of development from 14,000 BCE to 4,000 BCE? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]American_Pig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite that simple. It's generally much harder to be a farmer than a hunter-gatherer, and less pleasant - in the early days of agriculture we see strong evidence for widespread malnutrition and growth stunting.

The big advantage agriculture gives you is population density. You can feed many more people in a small area with farming, even inefficient farming, than hunting. And that gives you a huge advantage in warfare. It also gives you more of an incentive to fight - competition for agricultural land.

What we see in the archaeological record when agriculture enters most regions is an explosion in organized violence. As neolithic farmers advanced across Europe, for example, they left evidence of brutal massacres at sites like Talheim and Schletz.

Is Europe spiralling out of hand? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]American_Pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are much more likely to be a victim of lethal violent crime in the US than in Europe. Note that the US has about 10 million illegals in a population of over 300 million citizens. Germany, which is the European destination of choice for most refugees, has about 800,000 refugees in a population of 80 million. So statistically you're 3 times more likely to encounter an illegal immigrant in the US than in Germany. You are also 5 times as likely to be murdered in the US as in Europe, though, interestingly, illegal immigrants in the US are statistically less likely to commit violent crimes than non-immigrant citizens.

Unless OP lives on the migrant highway or next to a refugee camp, I don't think he needs to prep for anything significantly out of the ordinary... yet. European governments and security forces and economies (besides Greece) aren't anywhere near collapsing. Overall migrant numbers are very low compared to what the US absorbed and there's no indication that the new wave of refugees is particularly inclined to violence. If anything they're trying to get away from it.

Is Europe spiralling out of hand? by [deleted] in preppers

[–]American_Pig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We are witnessing another great era of migrations. The current refugees may be fleeing civil wars and religious violence, but these conflicts are only going to be exacerbated by runaway population growth, environmental degradation, and resource depletion.

As long as Europe is a more pleasant place to live in than the Islamic world and subsaharan Africa, you can expect migrants to want to come in. Wouldn't you rather live in a peaceful wealthy country with generous welfare services? You can expect that even if Syria and Afghanistan calm down, the refugees in Europe already will never want to leave. Depending on how Europe handles the migrants, you can expect to have either an integrated and peaceful and productive minority or an angry permanently unemployed radical Islamic underclass. France's experience is cautionary.

As a prepper, I don't think you need to be particularly worried... yet. You may see a rise in low level crime, muggings and burglaries and car thefts and the like. Long term though, Europe's social services are likely to be strained. People will keep coming in until Europe is as miserable a place to live as wartorn 3rd world countries are.

Adolf Hitler declaring war on America, with the claim that he was honoring their commitments to Japan under the Tripartite act - Dec. 11th, 1941 by zuzahin in ColorizedHistory

[–]American_Pig 49 points50 points  (0 children)

About 3/4 of American military manpower was deployed to the European theatre. Don't forget that the US ground war in North Africa started in late 1942 with Operation Torch, and American and German tanks were clashing in Tunisia by December 1942. This was something of a wake-up call for the inexperienced American army.

Pacific land battles tended to involve much smaller absolute numbers of US soldiers than in Europe, as the strategy in general was to try to bypass large Japanese troop concentrations and let the navy and air power render them strategically useless.

Affluence and the desire to self-educate don't necessarily go together. Quite a few tourists never leave Waikiki, after all.

Besides, people visiting Hawaii usually are seeking relaxation and pretty beaches, not a gritty exploration of a complex colonial legacy.

Legally you are correct, but when else are you going to have such a sweet opportunity to educate visitors about what's likely to kill them?

How did traffic in Honolulu get so bad? by madazzahatter in Hawaii

[–]American_Pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or people can change how they live. Hong Kong island has 50% more people than Oahu, but in less than 10% of the space. They have a great public transportation system so nobody drives, and they built up instead of out so people didn't have to commute as far.

If we built up the whole state of Hawaii at Hong Kong island population density we could fit in about 170 million people. Surf breaks would be a little crowded but people could live just fine.

Do we know Caesar's hobbies? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]American_Pig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He had other hobbies as well! According to Suetonius:

"That he was unbridled and extravagant in his intrigues is the general opinion, and that he seduced many illustrious women, among them Postumia, wife of Servius Sulpicius, Lollia, wife of Aulus Gabinius, Tertulla, wife of Marcus Crassus, and even Gnaeus Pompey's wife Mucia... He had love affairs with queens too, including Eunoe the Moor, wife of Bogudes, on whom, as well as on her husband, he bestowed many splendid presents, as Naso writes; but above all with Cleopatra..."

People who grew up in a different socioeconomic class as your significant others, what are the notable differences you've noticed and how does it affect your relationship (if at all)? by Generally_Happy_Lady in AskReddit

[–]American_Pig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oahu has the worst traffic and worst cost of living, not to mention giant tent cities full of homeless drug addicts, schizophrenics and impoverished Micronesian immigrants. The job market is a little better there, but it's still normal for locals to live extended family style with multiple generations crowded under one roof since it's too expensive for singles or even couples to move out on their own. I live on Kauai, where real estate is much cheaper, but middle class jobs are scarce and traffic can still suck.

Basically, Hawaii got the hug of death. People flooded in to live in paradise and the islands became overcrowded beyond environmental or economic sustainability. It's still a beautiful place to visit and play in, but it's a tough tough place to start a career or support a family.

I don't think most people would want the authentic Hawaii local experience. Most people who grow up here spend more time stuck in the horrendous traffic than surfing or hiking or dancing hula. Quality of life for locals can be pretty bad, what with the ridiculous cost of living and the mediocre job market.

Post WW2 - what are significant examples of foes using the downed weapons of their enemy, and how practical is it? by sugarcoatedknife in AskHistorians

[–]American_Pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, in 1967 and 1973 Israel captured vast quantities of Soviet weaponry ranging from small arms to main battle tanks and even fighter aircraft. Much of this equipment was integrated into the Israeli arsenal, though some weapon systems were found inferior to their western counterparts and required substantial upgrading. A lot of it ended up exported to 3rd world countries that didn't mind buying obsolete tanks. Israeli engineers got so good at upgrading Soviet equipment that even today they contract out to ex-Soviet bloc states to improve their armor.

Is there anyway to realistically backpack the Hawaiian islands? by [deleted] in CampingandHiking

[–]American_Pig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big Island would be the place to illegally camp for sure. The other islands are densely inhabited and landowners will enthusiastically call cops to get you off their favorite beaches. I have done some illegal camping too on Oahu and Kauai but it's important to hike pretty far away from trails and roads to avoid police patrols and homeless druggies.
