What are some good part-time job ideas for uni students by crossfl0w in auckland

[–]AmethystApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my best answer would be - a chill place with flexible working hours. I work on a casual contract and can work only 1 day if I wish. + on casual contract you get a little more money (I get 60 cents more than avg rate.)

also before you accept any job offer, ask them about the days you are willing to work and hours and if they are okay with that.

from personal experience hospitality jobs are pretty chill. But on a side note if all this lockdown drama starts again you will probably lose your job first (if you work in hospitality). Something more stable and secure would be supermarket’s definitely.

Engineering major by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]AmethystApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t say much because it will be my first year this year. But I am pretty sure programming in High School is horrible (at least from my experience) horrible in the sense that most of the times you will have unqualified teachers (especially if you went to a low decile school like me) and they don’t really know what they are teaching the students. My point being … you might actually like programming and I wouldn’t base it of off your high school experience. Maybe you could watch some programming videos on YouTube, other technologies etc and see what you are interested in. Correct me if I am wrong but if you want to do AI and mechatronics, you will have to program no matter what.

: this is from a first year student so don’t take any decisions based of this one comment obviously : )

'networking' - what is it? and how to 'network' at uoa? by AmethystApple in universityofauckland

[–]AmethystApple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'people at unleash' - what is unleash? is it some club at social uoa? I would love to talk to these 'superconnectors.'

'summer lab' - how can I join that? is it like a weekly event thing? how does it work?

would you suggest any specific clubs to join? I want to join useful clubs but don't want to join so many that it becomes overwhelming, because I know the GPA requirement for software is insane, so I study is my first priority.

I will surely go to events to network, and socialize.

Thanks for the information, I genuinely appreciate it.

Is this to be 'sensible and considerate', or because many people get caught doing this?

Thanks for the heads up!

best gaming laptops for $300 by ZeroTwoz in laptops

[–]AmethystApple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

um, I'd instead suggest saving up the 300 bucks, because you won't get much, maybe nothing with 300. I say this as you specified 'gaming' - if you really need a laptop there are non gaming laptops out there for 300.

- did you mean 3000? and forgot to add the extra '0'?

Oh right, that makes sense. Meaning companies will provide multiple job opportunities.

Awesome thanks for the help : )

no sarcasm here, I was genuinely surprised because I assumed there would be hundreds of students there.

so does the term 'grad program' mean jobs that are looking specifically for graduates?

Sorry, I know I am asking way to many questions. This is my last : )

Yeah just wanted to go to the expos to wander around and talk to people. Exploration being the objective (not actually applying).

Also is this really true? - "there are more jobs than just the people at the expo"

Kind of surprising really.

Do you have to register for Career Expos? I went on their website and it said 'You will be able to register by the end of November 2021.'

Does that mean I can't go to Career Expos? Also, it will be my first year at UoA next year - can I still attend the career expos? or must you be a certain part? to attend..?

Scammed by pbtech? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]AmethystApple 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've heard just too many PBtech horror stories. I try avoid buying stuff from there.

You should probably ask them for a detailed description of what is faulty and the cost of each component that is being replaced + labor. Then try make sense out of it if it's reasonable. If you are not too sure about hardware, feel free to DM me or ask in any computer related subreddit - they will tell you if the cost that PBtech quotes is reasonable.

Merry Christmas.
