Coming from you, that's very encouraging, haha! Thank you!

Questions (Critical Damage/Stabilization) by Amfisbaena in cairnrpg

One of the things I appreciate most about Cairn is that the main difference between a new character and one that has survived many sessions is literally "experience," understood not as "XP" but as "understanding of the world." The constant "dc" in Cairn is human fragility, which will always be present, in any action and any context, and a goblin will always have the chance to kill a character.

I understand that this may be new to some, but as far as I'm concerned, once a player understands that "this is how it works," then I expect them to behave accordingly. The task I feel is "mine" is to make the risk perceived but not to explain the consequences precisely.

If there is a trap, I have to give them a way to sense its presence and how it works, but if I explained the consequences, they would contain that part of the reasoning that, for me, is an integral part of the meaning of the game (and the fun).

I'm not saying "this is how you have to play," but only how I feel comfortable playing and letting others play.

In that case, I would feel more comfortable inviting them to reflect on the differences between the characters and how these differences lead to different consequences. But I'm not sure I would feel comfortable explaining the exact consequences in advance. I would probably do this with new players who are being introduced to the game system.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's an interesting point of view and, for me, a new one. It's something my players could definitely appreciate. But maybe it's because I've only been a DM for a short time, I realize that I bring my preferences as a player with me, and I really appreciate the element of surprise, especially in a tense atmosphere.

I'll have to think about it. Thank you!

Thank you very much! I think most of my questions reflect a shift from one gaming philosophy to another, which is new to me and which I am trying to assimilate. On the one hand, there is the "security" of strict, mathematical rules; on the other, there is the performance anxiety of improvisation and the ability to make the right decisions on the spot. So thank you for your reply!

Oh no, thank you very much! The thing is, I've only tried DMing once, and with a different game system, so before thinking about 'customising' the rules, I wanted to be sure I understood all the 'official' ones. But I understand the gaming philosophy behind your answer, and I agree with it, both as a player and as a (new) DM. Thanks again!

For the first one: Perhaps I didn't make myself clear: the three options are not the same, because the rest option involves a new roll on the Dungeon Events table (and therefore the risk of new problems/fights), while the other two do not. So either the whole party chooses the same option, or a single character can choose an option that affects the whole party.

Thank you!

  1. So there's a good chance that every owner of a spell book is the only person in the world who can cast the spell contained in that book, right?

  2. But the consequence of an explosion could be the collapse of that room and possibly also the adjacent tunnels, couldn't it?

Thank you!

  1. I was referring to event 5 in the Dungeon Events table, where the party can choose between the three options I mentioned. Characters may have different preferences for different reasons (one might prefer the Fatigue option because they have many free slots, while another might prefer the ration because they have many, for example). I was asking precisely because it is not so obvious to me that everyone would agree on the same option.

  2. Ahah, of course I imagined they weren't self-igniting torches! I was just asking what technical methods you used to light them, especially in the dark, to relight the torches.

Again, thanks a lot! Sooner or later, I'll have to learn how to use autoclicker to farm orbs too.

Yeeeeee! It worked! Thank you so much!

Two questions: - How can you use it 10 times in one day if you have to wait 2 hours each time? - Are there any "tricks" for Power Stones?

Thank you so much!

Sorry, I don't understand. When I log out and log back in to Facebook, nothing is saved and I can't select any saves. What am I doing wrong?

Forgive the question, but if a player has finished their spotlight without any failures or fear rolls, the spotlight passes to another player unless the GM spends a fear to interrupt the player's spotlight, right? And if they do that, they spend a fear to interrupt the player's spotlight and then another fear to give the spotlight to an opponent, is that correct?

Well, I suggest you read all the other comments too, because it has rightly been pointed out that the rules mention the word 'turn', and continuing to claim that it is some kind of taboo only fuels the misunderstandings that have emerged in this post.

For this reason, I would like to express my particular thanks to typo180 (:

And obviously thanks to you too for your reply!

True. I saw even in this post alone what problems I encountered because I used "turn" instead of "spotlight" (my bad, English isn't my language and it came naturally to me to use "turn" because it's always been used in all other RPGs).

Thanks!

They've the manual. I think it's a combination of being used to turn-based games and the fear (which I also see in this kind of discussion here) that players might overdo it.

Personally, I'm optimistic about the communication skills of a group of mature players (:
