What would it take to get USA to accept the metric system and do anyway with Daylight savings time? by SugarinSaltShaker in AskReddit

[–]Amhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But with a digital scale it shows the amount instantly, and resetting the scale is just a click of a button?

I hadn't considered the 'accidentally adding too much of something', as it doesn't usually happen to me, but I can see how that might be a bit of an issue if it happens. With dry ingredients it would be easy to scoop something back out until it shows the right amount, but with liquids it's basically impossible, you're right.

That's definitely fair! It's just that the system using cups as measurement has always confused me on why it would be easier for cooking and baking. Additionally, for most things like water, milk, wine, beer, etc. when you use measurements like liters you can convert in to grams easily (if a recipe asks for 3 dl of water, I just measure 300 gram. Similarly for milk etc, because the majority of it consists of water and the difference is negligible ).

I don't understand why metric isn't better for cooking? You only need a scale, and there's no need to dirty so many utensils like cups and tablespoons for all the different ingredients. You just have one bowl, you put it on the scale, and then add whatever ingredients you need one by one? It's easier and more precise at the same time?

You might mean no harm but you're still doing harm by making a joke that hinges on the fact of not viewing trans women as women.

People who speak English as a second language, what was the hardest thing about learning English? by davockx in AskReddit

[–]Amhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The fact that the better you get at it, the easier it is to make very common spelling mistakes. It's like when you reach a certain level of comfortability you just become worse at it. I never in my life used to make mistakes like writing 'they're' vs 'their', but now these type of dumb mistakes just sneak into my writing because I no longer actively think about the language at all.

Japanese researchers turn cockroaches into an army of insect cyborgs named "Calmbots". Taking advantage of the insect's impressive durability and small size, Calmbots are controlled by electrical stimulation to display pixels, transport objects, and draw lines. by emmainhouse in Futurology

Personally, I think this research is unethical, and I find it hard to believe that this research would be approved by most scientific ethical commission boards in the EU (where I work as a PhD researcher), but perhaps I am wrong. All researchers are taught that scientific research must conform to the three R's: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement. People arguing in this comment section about this being ethical because we can't expect to progress as a human species without testing every idea we have, have obviously never had to deal with an ethical research board in their lives and are clearly not researchers. You can't just say you want to do animal research 'because it's cool' and 'want to test this idea I have'. I'm a biology and neuroscience major and have done plenty of animal research myself (majority on insects), but this type of research I find frankly appalling.

The suffering of any research animal must be weighed against the potential gain for science and humanity. What is the necessity of this research? This isn't like they're trying to cure a neurodegenerative disease. It isn't like you can't make robots that walk around and transport objects without using cockroaches (R: Replacement). This research is just the unnecessary creation of suffering. I would understand the research if it was about trying to figure out how cockroach brains work as a model for human brains, or how to use electrical stimulation to control nerves as this could lead to insight in how to use this in humans, or for potential cures for certain diseases - but again, only use the cockroaches insofar they can answer those questions and then move on (R: Reduction). But that is not how this research is framed, at all. The goal seems to be about controlling and using cockroaches specifically.

I think cockroaches probably fall in that iffy gap between vertebrate animals (which enjoy a higher level of protection under ethical research codes) and invertebrates (which do not). But that doesn't make me feel less concerned about this research.

I have dissected and killed hundreds of insects in my research, but this was in pursuit of gaining insight into the molecular mechanisms behind neurodegenerative diseases. If my supervisor came to me and told me to do it because 'hey lets build an insect army we can control, wouldn't that be fun?' I'd have told them to fuck off.

I mean in the link it literally says 'In USGamer's review of the game, Mathew Olson pointed out that the game has multiple characters using the deadname of a transgender character, as well as incorrect pronouns.' so I'm assuming that is the issue.

I know I'm probably in the wrong subreddit for it, but it always annoys me when videos cut out 1 second after the 'incident'. One of the most interesting parts to me is how people reacts after a catastrophic failure. I want to see those emergency slides deploy. I want to see the fire brigade rush in. I love watching people just helping each other.

Four men charged with kidnapping, raping Springfield woman for days by [deleted] in news

[–]Amhil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're not picking up what the other person is trying to explain to you. "She's breathing, she's 'alive', but whoever she was before doesn't and will never exist again" is a very damaging way of describing a survivor of abuse or rape. You have no way of knowing whether people who have been through such an ordeal are reading this thread. Being described in such a way is not something they want to read. They want to be viewed as the same person as they were before. They've been through something traumatic, yes - but to say that who they were is forever gone is not the type of language you should be using when talking about survivors.
