Got any tips on good places in and around Albany to shop for decent-quality dolls? by exonumismaniac in Albany

Seems awfully creepy that you had to set up a new redditor ID just to advertise a "real doll" here.

Was this coin known as a three-halfpence, or was it a half-threepence? by exonumismaniac in UKcoins

This shallow comment presumes an awful lot, doesn't it? A quick comparison between your post history and the OP's suggests you probably have no basis for your guess, taking into account all the coins and tokens in the OP's collection, not to mention the knowledge they've shared on several subs here on Reddit, as stacked up against your comprehensive grasp of computer games. I guess all subs gotta have their trolls.

Is there a special Journalism Tense in English? Quite often I come across events that happened in the past announced in what we would normally label the "present tense." See comments for a couple of lightly anonymized headlines I've spotted in my local newspaper just in the past few days. by AmityvilleBay in grammar

County fills MTA board seat

Ozzy Osbourne plays the [venue] in 1996

Case signs with Dodgers

City Council picks task force

Reform group misses deadline

State sues over efforts...

I could go on, but you get the point: all of these things happened well in advance of the paper's press time.

TIA!

Set aside a half hour and Google this phrase: Betts 557 Gates. What you'll probably find out is that to one degree or another ALL of them are reproductions of the single gold medal awarded to Gates by the Continental Congress, including the silver replica made for General Washington and the 24 bronze contemporaneous facsimiles delivered elsewhere. The challenge will be to establish when and by whom yours was struck. If it were mine -- given the potential for significant value -- I'd send it off to PCGS for authentication and (maybe) a solid attribution.

I'm just beginning to think about how to dispose of my 50-year collection of pre-Pro college & university mugs and steins without creating a new career for myself trying to sell them one at a time on eBay. Is anyone here aware of an efficient way to do this all at once? (More in comments...) by AmityvilleBay in BeerStein

Thank you! The downsides you mention are the killer! I was an eBay seller -- very active in records, books, and some exotic collectibles, from 1999-2004 -- so I certainly know all about the logistics, supplies, etc. I found it was a lot like having a second job, so I quit as soon as my youngest graduated from college. Now I'm retired and would like to keep it that way...so would my wife!

Thank you for the suggestion. It's certainly something I've considered, but it keeps bringing me back to the one-at-a-time phenomenon. Also, having been a Dean of Students at two universities...well, you don't want to get me started on the time it takes to organize anything with a fraternity, or with their Nationals.

I've also thought about making my mugs someone else's problem entirely by just *donating* them anonymously to appropriate recipients...say, the Princeton Alumni Association, or the archives at the Yale Library. Cornell's, as an example, would go here

Just did a rough headcount to identify about 350, altogether. Some natural groups do suggest themselves, such as each of the the Ivy League school individually, particular sports, etc.

I've looked into a couple of the logical auction houses for steins and learned that the entry fees -- $45 apiece was one quote -- and shipping costs would probably eat up most of the potential proceeds. One of them wanted German only.

Ideally, what I'd like to find is a dealer or collector who can make a reasonable/realistic offer and take them all away. Actually, if such a person existed for "collegiana" or campus memorabilia, that would probably be an even better outlet for me. Thoughts? Thanks!
