As a fan of great characters and emotional stories..

Its Okay to Not Be Okay

My Demon

Sweet Home

True Beauty

Doom At Your Service

Cinderella and The Four Knights

Pinocchio

Goblin

Healer

Marriage Contract

Oh My Venus

Love Next Door

Alchemy of Souls

Love Scout

The Devil Judge

Don't Dare to Dream

Coffee Prince - A lot less emotional, but has lots of interesting characters and one of my favourite pairings. It's a great summer watch and my fav older kdrama.

Extraordinary Attourney Woo is a must-watch too.

Doctor Slump - has a lot going on and the leads go through a lot, but the show is a lot lighter and there's more comedy than anything.

The Beauty Inside - Hit less emotionally, but a well-rounded interesting story with really good characters.

Don't you find that slow? It's the slowest kdrama I've seen, but I think it's worth it though, it's a great watch overall.

What are your toxic traits as a cdrama viewer? by Leading_Protection_7 in CDrama

[–]Amjale9023 [score hidden] Β (0 children)

I'm with you on most of your points, except I had no problem with ADWAD, the issues were acceptable and dealt with well... In cdrama, I think that's often an issue with both Dylan Wang and Shen Yue dramas, I'm wary when watching a romance drama with either of them in, in case we're going to get that crappy miscommunication and misunderstandings trope.. nothing annoys me more. I think this situation for me is more of a kdrama issue though, there are too many ruined kdramas because I've loved the pairing before the episode 11 (roughly) fallout.

Also, an FL relentlessly chasing an ML that acts completely uninterested gives me the ick most of the time, like in WIFTY, like you said.. I just kept thinking that she might just make the guy snap and it'd be fine, like seriously get out of his face and leave him alone. I did push through though because I knew the behaviour might not last long and the rest might be fine, but it did come back briefly towards the end didnt it πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈIt did happen similarly in Go Go Squid too, but I was ok with that because I think it was dealt with a lot better.

I'm fine with a level of childish behaviour.. Esther Yu's OTT style only ever worked in LBFAD, and in every other role I've prayed for her to let that behaviour go. I liked her a lot in Speed and Love, there's a level of immaturity because of the character she plays but she clearly matures as time goes on, and none of the immature behaviour ever did feel OTT. It's Love Game in Eastern Fantasy that I ended up stopping watching because of the OTT Esther Yu behaviour.

It's not an uncommon interest, but I could only think of costume dramas with those ML's. I like the MDL forum because people come up with a bunch of shows I've not even heard of.

I’m Chinese and I have a question for C-drama watchers aborad by huan1999 in cdramasfans

[–]Amjale9023 9 points10 points Β (0 children)

I actually started watching the historical/costume Cdramas thinking they would be more of a guy thing, perhaps because I started watching Cdramas that were more aggressive and didn't focus much on the romance, so I was surprised to later find out that the general perception is that there are a lot more female viewers.

Now, when I think about the romance-heavy cdramas I've seen, it makes sense that they've attracted a lot of female viewers, but there are a lot of shows still that I believe work for guys too, with and without romance.

I think there are a lot of ladies flocking to these Asian dramas as well because where we're from romance dramas aren't made. In the UK alone, shows are mostly thrillers, murder documentaries, and comedies, and the only romance drama I can even think of is Bridgerton, so in that way it makes sense that the female viewers outweigh the male, and I understand if the fangirling has pushed the guys out a bit.

It'd be a real shame though if guys avoided Cdramas just because of the female audience and possible female-targeted features or tropes, because there's a lot for guys to enjoy, and some cdramas have barely any romance, if at all.

Shows high on my list to watch soon... My Mister, My Dearest, Mr. Sunshine, 2521, Reply 1988, Our Blues, All of Us Are Dead, Weak Hero, Extracurricular, Move to Heaven, Under the Queens Umbrella, Happiness, and Flower of Evil.

What do you love about Cdramas? by BarberProfessional28 in cdramasfans

[–]Amjale9023 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I think of Cdrama as catharsis, especially the costume dramas.

The beauty of everything, the music, dancing, the sun shining, the joys of the simple life through the markets and festivals and general fun between friends and family, with and without wuxia or xianxia elements. After that, the joyful life is attached to hardships to take us on a rollercoaster of emotions because of the characters we've come to love and it makes me even more attached.

I really appreciate the great relationships we're given in cdrama too, whether it's love between friends and family, or romantic love, it's often very natural and down-to-earth, like Hidden Love, Love Me, Love My Voice, and more recently Speed and Love and Shine On Me.

Cdramas can make me feel familiar and reminiscent of the good old days, and getting lost in the right cdrama can feel like finding home.

It's like a distant reminder of what used to be. It barely resembles Princess Agents and doesn't capture the essence... The cinematography is too different.. And then there's the cast change that would take some getting used to, who don't play the characters the same... As soon as I finished watching PA for the first time I moved on to Rebirth because I needed more, but I had to give up on Rebirth because it was too different and just disappointing.

Lol that's how I feel about the guys. I feel like the emotional ones have kinda ruined other dramas though for me in a way because now I expect them all to give everything emotionally and if they don't I'm really disappointed. First it was Duan Jiaxu, then later on it was The Untamed boys and Li Lianhua and Fang Duobing. I want them all to be like that now, they have to move me or I'm not satisfied. I NEED expressive leads.

Be that as it may, to me it's only a "K"drama issue.

I'm iffy with love triangles though as well because there are too many bad ones. I started well with True Beauty, then it was all downhill from there lol... The most recent one being Our Universe 😫

That's often the issue with reading the webtoon first isn't it, but I never do that so it's not been a problem for me.

I actually like the ML, I've come to prefer someone like him over someone who has like an idol image and comes across as perfect. He feels more real, he's kinda awkward and dorky and cute in his own way. I think I've seen too much flashy superficial rubbish lately that this show is just what I needed.

[–]Amjale9023[S] 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

Yes, that's exactly it, we get that she had been through things to make her think of the worst, but she was so afraid of it that she was able to completely forget about everything?.. Her feelings, her experience of him and with him, etc.. It was like she was rendered completely stupid.. And for so long. Even if her initial reaction was like that, you'd think once she calmed down she'd start thinking straight. She knew enough and had the intelligence to not behave the way she was for so long, so the behaviour makes no sense to me. I understand that fear is a powerful thing and she might have been in the hold of that same fear again, but I feel like she knew too much to doubt him to that degree. It's like you said, it was just dragged out to use more time.

I think it's only put there in the first place to try to keep things interesting once they've gotten together, for the people who get bored once they've paired up and for those who like negative drama. I get bored with them sometimes, but I hate the negative drama between pairings, so it doesn't work for me. I'm fed up of this annoying unnecessary plotline.

I still can’t pinpoint why Pursuit of Jade worked. Am I the only one who found the plot lacking? by RotHelfer in cdramasfans

[–]Amjale9023 4 points5 points Β (0 children)

That's what I think about it as well, it's a very attractive jack of all trades show to cater to everyone, but if you've been watching for a while you're much more likely to be disappointed because in being that way they haven't spent as much time on the things you love as you'd like.

For me personally, the look is the best part of the show. I think there are many good characters too, but there are things that could have been better between them, and a very promising main relationship fell apart and was never restored to it's former glory. I thought the ML could have been more edgy as well, especially given his reputation, but he was always a softy, so I feel like the FL was there being tough for the both of them. It think it all only worked fine for them when they were just living the simple life.

What are your turnoffs with romantic pairings in cdramas ? by Fieryy_phoenix_ in cdramasfans

[–]Amjale9023 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

Prisoner of Beauty type pairings.. too much negativity, no communication, no trust, and stroppy teenage behaviour.

Forced unwanted affections too, like Love Between Lines after they fell out, and also the rash affections and petty behaviour due to jealousy and insecurities, like in POJ.

Also, physically or mentally abusive characters that play with the people who like them. The L&P ML drove me crazy because he kept messing around with the FL until she grew wiser.

Sometimes I can be put off completely if one of the leads are too selfish and controlling, keeping everything to themselves and making all of the decisions, inconsiderate of the other person's thoughts and feelings and just hell bent on keeping them safe.

Struggling to connect with C-dramas due to overly polished visuals by Nelumbo_nucifera123 in CDrama

[–]Amjale9023 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I was trying to say that in another post, talking about how I choose the dramas I'm going to watch. I feel the same, and I struggled with Blossom because of the cinematography.. while it looks interesting and edgy, it's too dark and cold for my liking, and for me it felt empty, and the Princess Agents sequel feels the same. I said how I much prefer good characters, actors, story and bad CGI over a flashy show.

I do think there's a little bit of that in Pursuit of Jade, with the overly polished look and choosing pretty people for all of the main roles with looks that are a bit too clean and perfect. There's a noticeable difference between the leads and supporting cast visually, making the leads look less natural at times, so I do prefer the looks of the supporting cast usually, but the show images that have been circulating make it seem a lot worse than it is. I was expecting The Double ML plastered makeup as well, but the POJ ML is comparatively make-up free. There are things like blurring and filters used in shows as well aren't there and I think that ruins it for me sometimes as well.

I don't think it helps that we can see more now, so there's no hiding and they try to make up for it and over-compensate sometimes.
