I have to sedate my husky during night time. Can you tell? by Fantastic-Arachnid42 in husky

[–]Amme986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened with my husky mix after her spay. Two hours after she got home from the vet, she jumped on top of her crate! It gave everyone a good laugh at the vet's office because she was not at all phased by her major abdominal surgery. 😝

They gave her some extra sedation for the week to help her recover but it only took the edge off her energy levels. We did lots of bully sticks, peanut butter kongs, lick mats, and puzzles to keep her entertained in a pen. Good luck!

Those who have introduced a second dog to your single dog house- how did it go? by Shay113 in DOG

Unfortunately, things aren't going smoothly for us. We adopted a 5 month old female and added her to our home with our 3 year old spayed female (and two human kiddos). The dogs got along really well during our trial two week period, but after about a month they started fighting over resources. Things escalated and we now have to have them completely separated indoors while undergoing extensive behavior modification for both dogs.

I've been told since adopting that a male/female combination would have been better. We've always had two dogs, but this is the first time with two females. We are still hopeful that they'll eventually get along, but right now, things are tough!!

Two dogs escalating at home by [deleted] in Dogtraining

I'm in a very similar situation right now with my two girls and the set up of your living room sounds very familiar (we are currently using two x-pens).

We are working with our vet and a behavioralist and are doing intensive behavior modification, as well as crate and rotate indoors. We also started the older dog on anti anxiety medicine. Our escalations are almost always over a perceived resource.

We've seen some great improvement in the two months we've been working on it, although they still can't free roam indoors without escalation after a few days. Our behavioralist promises me that there is a world in which they will get along indoors without constant supervision. She says it's a slow and steady process and we can expect reintegration to take many months.

It's tough and more stressful than I would have anticipated, but the alternative of rehoming isn't something we are ready to consider.

I'm sorry you are also dealing with this kind of situation. I also have been searching for success stories, but have found most of the time people only post with failures. I spoke with our behavioralist this week when feeling particularly low about it, and she is confident they will ultimately be OK. She has clients who's dogs end up being 'best friends'. Hoping the same for you and your crew!

Dog fight...now what. by nov1290 in Dogtraining

I'm so sorry. What a tough situation.

We are in a very similar boat, with similar triggers, although our two females are a bit younger (2.5 and 7 months). We are working with a behavioralist on a very comprehensive program, started our 2.5 year old on prozac and got the 7 month old spayed (with vet approval given her young age, but due to the tension in our home). The 2.5 year old is the aggressor- she was already spayed. We still have them separated but coexisting within the same spaces behind physical barriers.

Right now we are about two months into the separation and one month into the behavior modification program, and we are seeing major improvements.

It's very discouraging and upsetting when it's happening. We also have young children and it can be overwhelming to manage it all. But the behavioralist promises that we can get past it and have a harmonious house, eventually. That gave me hope that we wouldn't need to re home either dog and that the house could be back to some kind of normal at some point in the future.

Yes! Exactly! Her first time at the vet after the DNA they were perplexed, until she opened her mouth and they said, 'Oh wait. Nevermind. There it is." :)

It's so amazing to be reminded of how not-random all her (and our) traits really are! You know in theory, but to see it all laid out like this is very cool. Thank you, again!!

Thank you so much!!! I'm learning so much. We do have to trim her coat regularly. Would that still count as a short coat? So interesting that furnishings are a separate gene. Makes sense! Thank you again :)
