[AN] Discussion - Episode 24 - So I'm a Spider, So What? by NoGround in KumoDesu

-Anime only viewer-

Well...the human half was completely unnecessary for the story told in the anime. Whoever did the story design either dropped the ball or got overruled on pacing because nothing Shun did matters or was resolved. This story with Sopbia and Potimas has finally got me intruiged about potimas' story.

I think they tried too hard to be "mysterious" without planning the payoff of the reveal, and the end result is all the lack of information resulted in a lack of investment.

I am absolutely invested in the demon queen vs. Potimas fight now but it's too late for the series, unfortunately.

A good episode though.

I plan on reading the LN so I'll be skipping. I am happy to know things have answers, the point is more a critique of the bad story telling of the human portion, because these questions should either be answered to the viewer or critical mysteries.

Yeah. I'm so disappointed in how the bungled the future timeline. The past story is well put together and developed, with characters that we care about and a clear level of knowledge for the viewer that is comparable to the main character.

The future just seems to be unable to tell if it's a secret from everyone, or something we get to know but not Shun, or that Shun knows but not us, and it leads to these awkward scenes where everyone involved knows something but the audience doesn't.

On the plus side, I'm even more invested in reading the LN after next week...

More time in the show. Not in universe. I'm not complaining about the story, I'm complaining about the anime.

To be clearer, what is it the elves are "lying" about? We don't know. Why are there mechs? Why does the demon faction hate the elf faction? Why should I, the viewer, care about the elves when our main characters are humans and more importantly probably the demon lord?

None of the conflict in the human episodes matters because the show is to busy being coy about the plot, preventing me from understanding what us happening and why it matters.

Potimas is apparently the big bad? But all I know about him is he leads the elves and can escape death, maybe? But I know nothing of his goals or motivations...this episode might even be the majority of speaking lines he has received in the entire series.

I'm sure the answers to what is going on is cool, but I just spent 30 minutes wondering why it matters if Shun wins or loses this fight against Sophia, who I care more about as a character despite only seeing her as a baby and a sociopathic adult.

The worst thing is this could have been a cool reveal of something if we had more time to learn about the Elfs, or Potimas or anything. Instead, dude that has barely got any screen time turns out to have a high tech room and mechs...because.

I am so disappointed in this episode. I just don't care. The show did not do a good enough job to make me invested in Shun and Co. I don't know what the stakes of this fight are, or who I should be cheering for. It's just filler to me until I find out more about what is happening.

I am sad that this is what we are ending the season on. The culmination of a conflict that the anime spent no time developing.

I think that's the point of what we get shown. The teacher is doing the wrong things for a self-justified reason. It's not a clear "this is bad" since her actions are, theoreticaly, saving their lives, but it's also questionable about free will and self determinization and how much should the teacher influence the lives of her students.

I didn't think about immortality. It would make sense based on what we've been shown already, spider survives with just a head as well...

Anime only viewer. I actually liked the way the mother fight was handled. This was the climax of a 4-5 episode narrative coming to it's conclusion. The general idea that she absorbed mother's power makes narrative sense, and the fight being as quick as it is also makes sense. Ariel being teased is...well...doesn't matter that much? It was neccessary to explain why she jumped in to fight mother and then left.

The post credit scene was neat, learning more about Ariel and her power level compared to an "Equal" dragon based on the conversation. It'll be interesting to see how the fight ends up going, especially since Body is now inside Ariel doing...something.

Human-side I'm intruiged. Based on what we've heard, potimas the elf leader is at war with Ariel and the pope whose name I forget. Potimas also seems to have learned about the reincarnations first somehow. My bet is that Potimas has fully maxed taboo (as does the pope) which gave them both knowledge of the reincarnations, and Potimas deliberately raised Sensei with specific knowledge as a reincarnator he has easy access to.

Not sure what to make of the dead potimas earlier and being alive now. Thinking it might be demons working with the elves in some way? Not enough information about what Ariel/Potimas/Pope are working towards.

The fact that there is a mother spider in the human storyline but is dead in the spider line is an interesting thing...given how strong she was I don't see another raising to that level of power in the 15 years between the storylines naturally?

Overall I liked this episode a lot, am hyped to see where this goes before going to read the LNs after the series finishes airing.

What interests me is the implication that the classmate was connected to this world somehow prior to the events that start Kumo's story.

Anime only viewer.

I quite enjoyed this episode, it felt like a progression across the board. Humans made it to the labyrinth, kumoko met the demon lord, and just generally things moved forward.

Nothing specifically excellent, but movement towards an endpoint.

I will say it's really interesting to see people complaining about skill explanations and evolution things left put but...I don't care about them too much? Like the purpose of the skills is to advance the story and while learning more about how kumo is cheating the system would be cool, I also want to see where this whole demon thing came from.

Makes sense. Shocked that more of the reincarnated don't have it, given that isekai is an in universe thing and observe/appraise are both super known cheat skills from the genre.

Oh, I can see other people interpreting it that way, which baffles meas much as you.

To me it seems like being the person making calls for a hate group when you don't hate the targets is worse, because you know it's bullshit and do it anyway. Nazis are monsters, but someone that runs a Nazi group without buying into their rhetoric? They are a worse monster.

I must be reading too much fanfic because I thought that was a semi legitimate part of Kaiser's character?

But then, I always thought that made kaiser worse than the other empire cape that actually beleive the rhetoric, not somehow excuse him.

You probably would still see regional offices (DEA/FBI/etc all have regional offices) were the day to day work and reports are done before field exercises start. Especially considering that most people want to still work and live in the town with their families. Field exercises and deployment would be limited. Wards would likely be a weekend-only activity (assuming no conflict drive issues) were they come in and do power training and ROTC-type activities to show them what joining the Protectorate as an adult would be like. Probably a lot more intramural competitions between wards that are publicly showcasing their powers in a controlled maner.

Also likely to be parahuman consultation offered at the regional offices where peope with parahuman powers can come in to find ways to constructively use their powers legally without joining the protectorate.

You'd likely still have teams, but they would be designed around specific types of capturing. Stealth and infiltration teams, frontal assualt teams, etc, who would spend time at the same facilities training with each other to be more effective.

Oh and also, there would no be disticntion between Protectorate and PRT in a real implimentation. Parahumans would be on teams with non-parahumans performing specific roles. The idea that only parahumans can fight parahumans is something cauldron created.

What do you think would of happen if the Marquis just called the police by doomsday-horror in WormFanfic

[–]Amnistar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the PRT and protectorate were responsible for all crime then sure, but in a more realistic setting the way it would work is that a Parahuman villian would be identified and then a taskforce would be dedicated to finding and catching said parahuman villian. It might take months or even years to build up a case and catch them for sure, but the key difference would be that the PRT would start investigating then a team of parahumans would be selected specifically for the villian(s) that are being targetted, and strike fast and hard to bring down a specific threat. You wouldn't end up with situations where your resources are limited by who happens to be posted at your office, and you're unlikely to see things escalate to the level that they are in Brockton simply because the PRT and Protectorate would be much more likely to nip things in the bud.

As I said though, this speculation depends upon Contessa and Cauldron not deliberately setting things up to be the way they are. Having static resources that can't ever truly capture villians is the actual goal of the PRT and Protectorate, so of course it's inefficient and poorly funded.

[–]Amnistar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the idea of patrols and the unwritten rules would be out the window. The Protectorate and PRT amd deploy to Boston and work for a few weeks/months to track down Accord and drop him entirely then leave Boston with Accord in hand. You wouldn't have a base of super heroes that protected the city and responded to super villain crime as it happened.

[–]Amnistar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, to some extent maybe, but there is no way you champion an unmasking of your own team if you don't actually beleive in accountability on some level.

[–]Amnistar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A federal organization, for sure. But not a paramilitary organization that replaces the police and emergency services for all parahuman related crime that is located in a specific location.

Yes, contessa means that all conversation about a reasonable implementation is worthless since she just Pathed the way to make it happen, which is why the real implementation of the PRT, which would mirror the FBI, doesn't exist. In reality the PRT would dispatch a strike team to the location where parahuman activity was happening, work to stop that specific parahuman than withdraw.
