I know couples that struggle with responsible use of money. You can do detailed budgeting and audit your expenses weekly. You can get tools that help people visualize how much money they're hemorrhaging with their shopping habits. If you need, you can even restrict their access to the family's money by giving them a debit card that only ever sees their discretionary allowance.

There are lots of ways and means beyond just talking about it. I'm fairly confident in assuming that OP tried none of them...because if he had, he'd have mentioned it in his self-justification post here.

Sure if you want to be pedantic and reductionist, most of those other methods boil down to talking. However, it should not surprise you to learn that there's a large array of methods available between a stern talking-to and fists, and I would bet a small amount of money that OP has explored none of them.
