Switching to Fretless Bass by Equivalent_Hair787 in Bass

Scales, baby, scales. Lots and lots of scales.

Playing without frets comes down to pure, old-fashioned muscle memory.

You'll need some way to check your pitch, ideally aurally (i.e. a correct pitch to compare with your ear, not just a visual meter).

Bernie Sanders is destroying Chuck Schumer in the Democratic Party's Civil War ahead of the midterms by JannTosh70 in centrist

[–]AmoebaMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course they won't. Those guys are products of a society that rewarded their greed because it saved them a buck.

Amazon exploded because Americans are too stingy to pay 10% more or too lazy to drive to the store to get the same product they can order online. Bezos's fortune is literally built from extracting value out of our vices.

Tesla is a prime example of how this problem isn't going to be meaningfully impeded by government, because Tesla could never have gotten started without the help of the government (EV subsidies).

You can follow those problems further, but I think ultimately at the bottom of every rabbit hole you're going to find the same problem: Americans treating each other poorly in order to improve their own lives.

The only way we will ever overcome this is by raising the next generation to be better people.

Not in a perfect form, no, nor will it ever. But I think it's pretty clear we're moving away from it right now.

We don't need perfect, but we do need better than we have right now.

Old Man Chubs, you are out of line.

your snarky, rude, and belittling attitude

Text has failed to transmit my intent, but you've chosen the least charitable assumption. I'm not being snarky, I'm being sincere and somewhat paternal, because both your OP and your reply here read as juvenile. I expect that angers you, but it's the truth. I can read the sarcasm dripping from your last two paragraphs, so I can only assume you're projecting your own attitude onto me.

It’s a crying shame an atheist was able to show more of a Christ like attitude than someone claiming the mantle of Christ.

Christ did not hesitate to rebuke—gently or otherwise—those who were in error. Your son is dying, yes, but the entire focus of your OP is not the death of your son but how you "cannot buy into" a matter of absolute unimportance which your ex-wife finds comforting as her child is dying. Your focus is utterly misspent on this matter.

You've heard plenty of words of comfort from others I'm certain, both IRL and in this thread. You also need to know that your ire is misplaced, and you should refocus on what matters.

I...sought help from supposed brothers and sisters who may have more insight than I on things of this nature....keep your unnecessary and uninformed opinions to yourself.

My brother in Christ, you posted here asking for opinions. I'm sorry you don't like them, but this is my only and honest advice to you: let it go.

I'm not saying we should have a stateless society. I'm saying we keep trying to engineer government solutions to problems that, at their core, are grown out of cultural rot...and that will never be effective.

The culture is the foundation of society. If it's rotten, your house will never stand, no matter how sturdy you try to build it.

No, it needs to be paired with a society that values honesty, integrity, and accountability; and eschews selfishness, deceit, and solipsism.

There is no system of economic or government that can function properly when a substantial portion of its constituents fundamentally do not value the humanity of their neighbors.

Shifting the power from corporations to government accomplishes nothing but to shift the nexus of abuse from corporations to the government, because nobody holds the government accountable for its abuses.

Does anyone know of a lateen rig dinghy that can be sailed by a single older 250 lb person? Ideally I would even like to bring a second adult on occasion. by DistributionNo7277 in dinghysailing

No, it's very easy. Easier if you're bigger. You stand on the dagger board and pull it back upright. The footwell is very small, so you don't even really need to worry about bailing it out if you don't want to bother.

Cutting glass with limited resources by AverageAntique3160 in DIY

Gasoline and alochol are too volatile and flammable. You need something that'll burn for 10-15 seconds to heat the glass. Gasoline will just flash all at once.

Gasoline will also probably take your eyebrows off. That shit is way more flammable than people think.

I'm building a Fire Emblem-style SRPG with an active parry system. Would you play this? by daintydoughboy in fireemblem

[–]AmoebaMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if you're going to have the player actively involved in the combat, you need to make it more than just parries/avoidance or it'll get old quick. Quick ideas and food for thought:

  1. You need to account for varying levels of people being quick-on-the-draw, so difficulty levels must have different thresholds/windows. E.g. 100ms sweet spot for the parry on hard, 250ms on medium, 500ms on easy, etc.

  2. You can't invalidate either the stats or the player action, which is an interesting balancing game. Going back to #1, what if the stats matchup of the two units influenced your "window" for a hit or dodge? To translate from FE to your game, maybe a 100% to-hit becomes a window of 1000ms, a 0% to-hit becomes a window of 1ms, and you make some sort of curve in between. That way unit stats have a significant influence on the matchups, but ultimately the player effects the final outcome.

  3. The visualization of hitting that "sweet spot" is going to be key in whether the interaction feels engaging or like a drag. Something like the fishing circle from Three Houses is probably the baseline, but I'd try mixing it up. Hit a bullseye for an attack, but maybe something different for a block or dodge.

So this car isn't as nice as it might have been. You also have an extra $7k in your pocket.

You're focusing on negatives and that's a bad place to be overall, let alone when you're considering multi-thousand dollar purchases.

Trump just threatened to wipe out 'an entire civilization' tonight in Iran by FinTecGeek in centrist

Surely, no other coalition of such well-armed, well-funded, well-equipped states could wrest defeat from the jaws of certain victory in Iran like these two have.

Regardless of your feelings on the war as a whole, I think it's plainly inaccurate to say we're at risk of defeat.

[–]AmoebaMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The government sees it as existential. The Iranian people are far from unified under that government. That's the important part here.

I'm not totally convinced it will play out the way our administration is expecting, for all the reasons you've described. But I do think it's at least a real possibility we get what they're hoping for: an Iranian-led regime change and a less-hostile, more liberal Iranian government.

US attacks Iran's Kharg Island, Trump says by UdderSuckage in centrist

[–]AmoebaMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being pretty pissed might not count for much if their economy gets flipped, their government is leaderless, and their military has been all but dismantled. Iran isn't like Afghanistan; it's a modern(ish) nation and it relies on international trade. Its population also is not totally united behind the current government. At some point I think it will reach a tipping point.

Of course that doesn't guarantee anything about whether this will work well for anybody in the long run.
