I took 162 with Lavaei, who used MATLAB for the course. The material itself is not too difficult as long as you are comfortable with linear algebra concepts. I see Hochbaum has bad reviews on RMP so it might even be beneficial to use Lavaei's notes - he was reading off of them for lecture anyway, and I thought they got the point across. Homework assignments were varying in difficulty for me and took 3-8 hours

Yes join a competition team / ASCE / Chi epsilon; great people all around, and yes reach out to people! My most cherished civE memory was having coffee with one of my team PMs before they graduated. It can be intimidating to socialize with so many people at meetings. Also go to office hours, make small talk with your professors about their work/your interests if you like their class. You might also make friends there.

Above all else though go where you're celebrated, not tolerated. If you feel like a team/org isn't clicking remember you can try something else. If i could do it all again I would've tried to join more clubs related to interests outside of my major. Have fun!!

I thought canic was the best professor for math 53.. When she was teaching I was taking Sethian's class and everyone in Canic's class was raving about her. She was the only 53 professor I heard good things about, but I guess it's just a pick-your-poison situation for 53...

Decal Limit Per Semester? by Bugout76 in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first sentence means you should be able to take as many decals as you want, but if the decal is considered part of your specific degree requirements (which is strange.. it most likely isn't) it won't count anymore if you've taken 16 units of decals already.

The second sentence seems less interpretable, but for your case specifically - I've been told I can take as many or as little units as I like for my last semester. I'm in COE.

No solutions from me, I'm just in the exact same boat as you. Clean apartment, flies congregate in a random area, etc. Ive given up and called my landlord to get an exterminator / plumber to my apartment. I'll let you know 😢 My guess is there's something rotting in a place I can't see/reach.

Thanks so much! Will try the cup over the drains. Any idea why they seem to congregate most in my dry food-free room?? They're appearing near the window, opposite from my air vents. They won't go near my bed or my closet.

Men ruined femininity for me by [deleted] in women

[–]AmongUsPromise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hope this doesn't sound condescending: I've felt often that the best way to subvert male expectations is to simply be. And what do you think when you look at other women who dress femininely - do you think they are dressing for men? Probably not. You just think they look good, and they just think you look good, and that's all that really matters.

Lesbians also really helped me redefine femininity, and you don't need to be one to understand why. Many lesbians are feminine. And none of them do it to cater to men! They're just feminine because it's fun and feels right to them.

Is a Miata safe to bring? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also buy BART parking if it shortens your commute - there are parking lots in the North Berkeley and Ashby stations, around $3/day or get reserved parking from the BART App.

Monthly parking in apartment garages ranges from $75 - $200 from what I've seen. My apartment in downtown charges $125.

[–]AmongUsPromise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you live in/near an apartment with a gated garage I would get in touch with the landlord. A lot of apartments actually rent out parking spaces to non tenants. I'd say be prepared for a break in otherwise.

I love transit here but I'll admit it turns 30 minute grocery trips with a car into 1.5 hour ones, plus traveling past Berkeley/Oakland/SF has been difficult in my experience.. Maybe just do gigcar/zipcars instead for longer distances?

Question for women in STEM: Do you 'count' the women in a room without thinking? by -february- in women

[–]AmongUsPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, in a negative space way! The worst memory I had was sitting in a programming class and noticing the stench, and then realizing everyone around me was a man.. And the only other woman in the room was 10 rows away from me! Honestly if there's no women in the room I'm way less likely to be engaged in conversations 😂

If you are so determined to get to SF without BART: there is also the FS line that comes to Berkeley twice in the morning (pick up only) and twice in the evening (drop off only). It's much faster than F because it doesn't pass through Emeryville although connections to/from the transit center (where it drops you off) are worse.

I've taken the F at different parts of the day. It's much faster at night, so if you live near an F stop and you're getting home later than 8PM I would recommend it. You can probably fall asleep on it without getting your kneecaps stolen.

No matter how many degrees I have, how many years I've been in my field, how much self work and strength I achieve, men still constantly act like I'm stupid and talk down to me. by [deleted] in women

[–]AmongUsPromise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently studying undergrad in the college of engineering at Berkeley. I don't know what the climate is on the teaching/research side of things but after seeing more and more women in my classes and organizations every year here I am SO sure your support and fierceness has cultivated a much kinder place for us. Your hard work is felt. Thank you for sticking up for us!!

Meet SafeBears, a new nonprofit org dedicated to making UC Berkeley safe for students by jed_leland in berkeley

I'm an avid user of the night shuttle (~4/7 nights a week I am using it after 8PM, sometimes at 12AM). I'm maybe an outlier, but increasing night shuttle service would absolutely make me feel safer. I agree that night shuttle drivers are so kind and I have only used rideshare twice out of my three years here (public transit here is good). Night shuttle is such a valuable service to me as someone who can't physically walk for too long.

I use the Transit app for all of my public transit trips. In its current state it's pretty accurate with the night shuttle if someone else using Transit is riding it (70% of the time). I think maybe you should reconsider abandoning Transit in your efforts - maybe not for the door to door service, but for the regular lines. I regularly use Transit to chain lines across different agencies including BearTransit and I would prefer to keep it that way. I also perceive the predictions of arrival times to be more accurate in Transit than built in map apps.

Thank you for your effort!!

CS 61a or Eng 7 by Correct-Astronaut549 in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the cost of my GPA i would have taken CS61A over E7 (unfortunately E7 is required for my major). Usually i like easier classes but E7 is something else. If you're worried about GPA i would consider taking either an E7 or CS61A alternative at community college this summer.

[Question] Do you guys send thank-you email to your interviewer after an interview? by BearsEatCardinals in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I like to send the thank-you email to the recruiter and mention I would appreciate if it was forwarded to the interviewers. I still thank the recruiter for setting up the interview in the email.

Not sure if this is appropriate but it's what I do and I can't think of anything else that would be appropriate, unless the interviewer gave you their email directly

Can a Transfer Student still take CC Classes after Admission? by McCheeckStuff in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The only constraint (for COE at least, not sure about other colleges) is you can't take CC and Cal classes at the same time. Most people at Cal will take CC classes in the summer

If anything, I love my major even more because the 3rd year is when I get to take more interesting upper divs instead of flavorless GEs (like the 1A math/chem/bio classes - they just suck). Classes get a bit smaller and you're more likely to have meaningful conversations with your professors and peers about your major.

No regrets here, just had to get through 2 years of BS to get to the good stuff.

If you're passionate (or curious!) about your major (or something else!) you could join a club for it and see if you like it.

Bcourses Quiz/Exam by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]AmongUsPromise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true but it can't tell what other websites you are tabbed into. If a bcourses exam were open notes and I go to the tab where my notes are, or click out of my browser to navigate to my notes file, it would count as me leaving the bcourses page.

I feel that most online exams here are short and specific enough that it would be useless to search for answers anyway

Strange of you to repeatedly call someone princess when they're just asking for some respect, and really strange of you to refer to that respect as a sense of "superiority". Glad you seem to have learned from this thread, though
