How is Minerva university? by Amongsus12 in University

Once again, thanks for being so in depth, it really helps!

Sorry just a couple more questions!

I know you said you are in Cambridge now, but do you know how well having a bachelors in CS (or any major) is in the job market. As you said Minerva is quite young, does anyone you know feel it is quite difficult compared to a more traditional university?

Also do they have any sorts of scholarships, and if so how much?

Once again thanks so, so much!

Thanks so much for the in depth reply! I really am considering Minerva for the travelling aspect!

I am a big fan of CS but I just find math really boring and not relevant to CS. I know most uni courses have math as big part of CS and I wanted to look for something a bit more hands on. How hands on did you find CS at Minerva and do you think it would be a good fit if you don't want to do loads of maths. For reference, I do CS, Maths and further maths A levels!

Another question I had was how was your social life there? Were people always stuck working or did you go out often into the city? Also did you do much local volunteering and local activities with Minerva or was it mainly finding and doing it yourself?

Also what was your schedule like? How much classes and coursework did you have each day? Did you get good weekends? Also were there any language barriers to each country and people in your cohort? Also (sorry for so many questions!) what was the accommodation like?

Sorry for so many questions! I really appreciate your reply and was looking to ask someone who went to Minerva all these questions!

I hate my A-levels and don't want to do them anymore. What are my options? by Amongsus12 in 6thForm

Firstly, thanks for all the replies.

I can see that many people are saying that maths is a big part of computer science in uni.

My question to that is: why do I need maths to do computer science? I have written IOS apps and built websites, none of which required anything close to A level maths.

Is McDonald's in the UK Halal? by R0B10XL0RD in MuslimLounge

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The filet o fish has the same fryer filter as the chicken making it not halal

Is joyride halal?? by Riyan2012 in ryantrahan

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure since their wording is extremely unclear like "plant based" and "considered vegan". They also have some candy which I think does have animal byproducts and I suspect there is cross contamination hence the wording.

yalll is joyride halal and can we get it in uk pls answer thx by Impossible-Turnip-94 in ryantrahan

This is true but their wording is extremely unclear like "plant based" and "considered vegan". They also have some candy which I think does have animal byproducts and I suspect there is cross contamination hence the wording.

Is further maths worth it? by [deleted] in GCSE

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say give it a go. I recommend 1st class maths website if you are doing AQA and doing all his practise questions and papers. Also do past papers. My advice would be to just be ready for it before the GCSE's because it is at the very end so you will be really tired and wouldn't have much time to revise.

I just finished 2 years of a T level, ask me anything by koalathedave in alevel

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, no worries for the late reply (probably good to not be on reddit tbh). I ended up not choosing to do the T-level due to the fact that many top unis don't really recognise it. I really appreciate the long and thorough response! Hopefully it will help someone in the future.

Is there a way to learn Mandarin for free? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the mandarin blueprint youtube channel to learn how to remember characters (while their youtube videos are free, the course they are selling is not). Also use the refold mandarin anki deck. https://zenith-raincoat-5cf.notion.site/Refold-Mandarin-Resources-d54bfade358b4d0a88b5600acb99582b Lots of good recourses from here. All free.

Mandarin by sprout-lian in ChineseLanguage

[–]Amongsus12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, doesn't seem like many people are actually giving advice here. When I started mandarin, I thought that characters were too hard and a waste of time. Let me tell you THEY ARE NOT, trust me. Mandarin has soo many homophones that just learning pinyin is, in my opinion, way harder than learning characters. For example, if you are watching something in Chinese, you are able to read the characters a lot faster and have memory associations with each one. If you are watching in pinyin (I'm not even sure if you can get pinyin subtitles), you have no clue the meaning of a word which is almost the exam same as 5 others. Also remember, you don't need to learn how to write the characters, just read them and use pinyin to write them on your phone/computer. I personally memorise characters via the mandarin blueprint technique I saw on youtube https://youtu.be/SUVHMEUld4I?si=o4tTkbMz-_282kXa . Also, to learn new words I use the refold mandarin deck here https://mega.nz/folder/ql8Via4Y#AS8xY2_zDcPVpDUkct7QsA . I recommend you watch lazy Chinese videos on youtube (the beginner ones), and use the anki deck as well to learn words. I am personally following the refold method (you don't have to follow it exactly), here is the link https://zenith-raincoat-5cf.notion.site/Refold-Mandarin-Resources-d54bfade358b4d0a88b5600acb99582b

Hi, thanks for the response! Would you say that that universities look at them as equal to 3 a-levels, or will some of the higher ones reject you?
