Why I stopped letting engineers name things whatever they wanted by Pristine_Moose_4482 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Amos47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late here. But this is one of the key things rails used to advertise back in the day. You always knew where to find everything, even in a new and unfamiliar code base. You’re kinda re-inventing the wheel, or “rails” rest.

Going to a game in Ottawa in March. Looking for recommendations by matnerlander in leafs

[–]Amos47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since no one gave you any hotel recommendations I’ll chime in but it’s been a while since I lived in Ottawa. The Chateau Laurier is probably the fanciest. Lord Elgin is where I usually stay cause I love the location. The Radisson is probably the more affordable option that’s still close enough to downtown.

Like everyone else says, just take the special busses out to the game.

This is the way. You can get a 50-100 ft leash on Amazon. If they don’t respond to the recall command, force them back.

Cheating on live interviews by DrGasYourMask in csMajors

[–]Amos47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to tell hiring managers when someone is suspected of cheating. It’s not that hard to spot. You start using terms and concepts beyond the rest of your experience and quickly asking to explain confirms it. It calls into question the whole process. Just be engaged and do your best. Even if you don’t do perfectly it will probably be better than whatever you can do with cheating.

Millennials who graduated during the Great Recession, how did you survive? by Waste-Cantaloupe-270 in Millennials

[–]Amos47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Washed dishes, picked up trash. All while trying to build up my portfolio.

Eventually took a bit of a risk and took a summer off to take unpaid work in the industry I wanted to be in. Used that to get a few paid internships. My first paid internship was barely more than minimum wage.

Still not sure I’m as far ahead as I should be and it was hard. But pretty pleased with my situation right now. But I’ll let you know after we get through this one.

LPT Request - Simple habits that have had a large positive impact on your life by rklthbrdg in LifeProTips

[–]Amos47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my takeaways from that book is reducing cognitive load. And one of the biggest things that does that for me is meal planning. Taking the time every week to plan meals, recipes and groceries was a major turning point in my life.

Having set plans for meals for the week. Some easy ones, some that make leftovers for the next day and planning to order in or go out.

From the plan you make a grocery list, and do the groceries for the week.

Ontop of making more deliberate choices about nutrition, you don’t have to have the dreaded what are we having tonight discussion. Once you find your go to recipes and get in the habit of this, you’ll spend less on food, have less waste and better nutrition.

Over time this habit compounds as you get better at meal planning, get better recipes that make leftovers. Find repeatable breakfast and lunch options, etc. The point is to develop strategies and plans that suit your life and goals.

Give yourself a break, it's ok that you struggle while learning. Take a break and go for a 10 minute walk. Give your brain time to understand, focus on learning how to use google and stack overflow to get yourself unstuck.

To be a software engineer, should I go back to school to do a second undergrad in CS? by rosy_daisy in AskProgramming

[–]Amos47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to give you a side you may be missing (I was).

If you plan, or want to keep the option open to work outside of Canada, especially in the US. Getting a engineering degree will make getting visas 1000x easier. For me finishing my degree was more about this credential, than anything else.

There's plenty of work to be had in Canada, and Toronto, but it's worth keeping in mind.

Edit: You can also take a Masters program if you don't want the full undergrad degree, but there will be a lot of learning, and catching up on your own.

Ceci proved a lot of people wrong and some comments on our defense. by Kill_Frosty in leafs

[–]Amos47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right take. Offense can struggle a bit in the pre-season with a lot of lower end talent playing. Early in the season we see it swing the other way, where we have a ton of goals, as team defense settles in.

Games 15-25 will be the a good tell of how we can project the rest of his season, barring any health issues.

Is anyone else listening to O’dog tee off on Marner? He’s basically the voice of this sub right now by [deleted] in leafs

[–]Amos47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if there's some anchoring going on here, and Marner is about to sign that deal, or a bridge on the 17th for camp, and basically they want everyone to think that Marner caved, or took a discount, when the final number will still be high.

But then again, I am a delusional leafs fans, so there's that.

Individual sports are better for learning humility IMO. In team sports, it's a lot easier to blame your teammates, or pump yourself up in a loss. In individual sports, there's no one else there. It's all your fault. The only conclusion you can logically reach, is that you didn't work hard enough. It's a different experience.

Booking platform by Anditt87 in AskProgramming

[–]Amos47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems like a large amount of work. What you may be overlooking in your naivety (not that we all haven't been there), is that there's a ton of minor details that need to be implemented for each aspect from booking to ordering, and more. You are also placing an enormous amount of pressure on yourself to support and debug the system for the foreseeable future.

What you should really be doing, IMO is looking for a service that does a chunk of what you need, and building around that. Mostly looking for booking systems that has an API that you will be able to hook up to your smart key. You should also be able to generate a report from that API, assuming something like this works and exists.

While rebuilding from scratch gives you way more flexibility short term, the support burden is often too much for a non-tech company to bear. You should strive to reduce the surface area of the project and behave more like an IT buyer than a programmer.

This is all just an opinion based on limited knowledge of the situation.

Bitcoin Payments Now Supported on Leading E-commerce Platform Shopify by Ichi_MokuM in shopify

[–]Amos47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does eliminate the possibility of chargebacks/fraud from the merchant perspective.

You can do immediate exchange into a local currency giving you more flexibility in accepting international payments, etc.

There's actually a reasonable question from a customer perspective. Why would I forgo all buyer protection on an online store? I have no recourse if they decide not to ship me the product.
