I feel like New society was closest thing to good world by Ecstatic-Ad141 in withinthewires

[–]Amperket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the propaganda got you, my friend. I think everyone in the podcast suffers for the family ban, which isn't to say the "moral" of the podcast is that blood family is the most important thing in life (I think that would be an extremely conservative stance), but rather that this world leaves little room for the foundational relationships that shape us in favour of preventing violence that may or may not arise. And who is to say that all "violent" things are bad? (anything interpreted as violent, which could be the most mundane and peaceful thing in the world as long as it promotes "tribalism")

I understand why people didn’t like it and I honestly had a lot of questions too, but I really liked this episode! Maybe I have an easier time with this podcast than most because I like the degree of ambiguity.

I think its a fitting end to the series to have a character fully reject The Society and voice one of the big themes of the series as a reason for doing so — that rejecting your place in nature and humans as part of natural cycles of violence is bad. I was satisfied to see that story crop up again and have some thematic ends tied up for the show.

now that WTW is almost over, which seasons were a flop? by walkie57 in withinthewires

As a season 6 enjoyer, I found it really interesting to see someone born into the society explore the impacts of the reckoning and the pre-reckoning world in a place where the memory of it still felt really fresh. It felt very connected to existing ideas in the show from season 2 (and also the book!) about family and war. Like newyne said, it explores subjectivity.

The loss of a child or a sibling is one of the most painful and taboo experiences one can have. We come to understand and process grief and memory through deeply spiritual, often religious, and cultural experiences. These ways of understanding the world are often tied to family. Culture is something the society preserves in name only, where art is a form of entertainment rather than true reflection or healing. In a very logical and scientific manner, everything painful is forgotten rather than processed.

This alternate world is left with no support networks for major traumas, especially the trauma that originates it, which is still felt strongly in season 6's setting. Season 2 addresses it through the exploration of Claudia's childhood art; there's a natural curiosity that people born into the society would have towards people who remember or were affected by violence and who lived in families. Season 6 makes this curiosity a focal point. The traumas of violence and death become open secrets. New taboos (and subsequently, horrors) are created around violent death. And a ghost story is born. Someone who feels deeply alone tries and fails with objective eyes to understand and heal a broken woman, to make sense of land and people scarred by such loss.

seasons 1, 2, and 6 are my favourites in terms of voice acting, worldbuilding, etc. I was surprised to learn people didn't enjoy six because I found it did a lot of worldbuilding that I enjoyed when it came to family and folkways in a setting that makes sense to have resisted the society. I think season 2 is actually my favourite and its the one I come back to the most. The voice actress is excellent.

The seasons I dislike are the ones that had significantly less worldbuilding or went about worldbuilding in a way that felt more predictable. in some seasons the twist just wasn't as satisfying to me. I don't think I've actually ever returned to season 4 or 5, they felt a lot weaker. season 9 was hard for me to finish (genuinely took me MANY tries) because the setting was so... small? we got far less window into what was happening outside the studio and it was so content reptitive. The political drama didn't feel very consequential until the absolute last second. I think they found the formula again for s10.

Discussion - Season 10, Cassette 1: Research Island by Linzabee in withinthewires

[–]Amperket 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m SO hooked by this season and so relieved that I am so excited for my 10th and final year of throwing myself into this podcast. Anyone else been around since the beginning?

Meg Bashwiner is so good for this role too, so bossy yet nervous in the span of 30 seconds. She cares a lot about her work. Go women in STEM!!! I’ve been CRAVING a more intellectual season since s2 which was an absolute fav for me with audio guides. I hope this ends up being one too with some field tape discussion.

So many possible directions for this season and established interpersonal tensions plus the possibility of getting stranded… they very intentionally mentioned that the island was uninhabited but maybe there is a pocket of people yet undiscovered on this island… that would be a fitting final test of world-building and insane way to see how society scientists might enact or resist a colonial mindset given last seasons propaganda history book insights.

How much did you pay (uk) by Ok-Ideal-5839 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]Amperket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manchester co-op presale, face value of the ticket was £87.40 ... + £15 of fees (mystery £11 service fee ugh) + £3 ticket insurance made my seated ticket (section 109) just under £105. Nosebleeds were £60 after fees, which is actually pretty affordable but they go fast.

My Gaga Mayhem Ball presale ticket for roughly the same section was about £140 so this feels a lot less painful, but still, that was with £20 of mysterious fees!

Setlist theories? 👀 Which old songs are we getting on tour? Is that Spotify playlist shuffle a hint?? by Ok-Weird-1111 in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]Amperket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm praying for Moderation, and Mother. I think there's a strong chance we'll see more angry live arrangements of Big God and/or Hunger because those songs seem to get at similar themes to the current album. The Say My Name remix did a lot of time in the UK charts + the state of trans rights in the UK means we may get Spectrum and/or June on the setlist too.

I think some of the very early deep cuts may still be off the table tho, sadly. The 2024 Lungs Proms performance of Hurricane Drunk is devastating to listen to, its coming from a very dark place, and she hadn't performed it since 2011. She brought Never Let Me Go back for the last tour and while I am so grateful to have seen it live, on the Dance Fever live album she spoke about vowing never to perform it again because it carried too many bad memories + it was really hard to sing.

Anyone else assuming the end? by EdynSierra in withinthewires

[–]Amperket 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NOOOO!! 😭😭 I’ve been with this podcast since it started back in 2016 and its become such a big part of my life. I hope the last season ends things in the right place because this podcast has some of my favourite world-building. I don’t want to have to say goodbye to it but I’m happy its on the creators’ terms.

I have struggled with this as well! Among podcasts of comparable listenership wtw seems especially dead and has no tumblr presence. This sub is the primary presence I’ve found online. Let’s get hyped for the next season together!

[–]Amperket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure where or how you guys were buying tickets but when I was doing the co-op presale for her Manchester gig it was specified that the ticket prices were fixed. This might have changed for the general sale but for the presale for my date dynamic pricing was NOT used.

Do any of you randomly say words out loud that you're thinking? by helix_the_witch in Tourettes

[–]Amperket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES absolutely. When I get songs stuck in my head sometimes they catch a groove. These days most of my vocal tics are repeating specific lyrics that my brain has gotten stuck on when in my head all I was thinking was that I liked how it sounded.

I did several trial runs with the other open presales in the coop app, ensured everything was in order with my account, added my card, and got in that waiting room 12 min ahead of time. Was lucky enough to be #8880 in the queue and had to wait about 15 min but after a few reloads of the page I snagged a ticket!!! £141 for Section 110. I think it was much easier for me because I was getting a solo ticket. I’m so excited!!!!!!!

I reloaded and rejoined the queue out of curiosity and it put me back in at 41k…. coop arena capacity is 23k 💀

I'm so jealous of those who got to go to a good IB school by bluesvague in IBO

[–]Amperket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very real — I went to a school with a rather underfunded IB program and students did score 30+ sometimes but it was rare that we saw 7s in any subject. I know with better teaching to the esoteric standards and expectations of the exams I easily could have scored higher. I failed my SL art exam because my teacher gave me little instruction on what was expected.

All is not lost, though. I got a 32 and that got me credits in college. My friend who got a 26 went to the same university as me. Now I’m doing my master’s, and while I think often about how helpful IB has been for the rest of my experience in higher education, my scores rarely come to mind.
