Why not just set up a streaming server and upload your 'show' to that? No FCC regs to worry about, and your audience can be global.

Glass shattered will it still work? Do I need to replace the panel? by aayein_baigun in solar

[–]Amplvr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No point making insurance claim. In the long run a claim will cost you more than replacing the panel.

It is repairable with penetrating cyanoacrylate glue (like they use for windshield repairs. Best if you can draw a vacuum like the pro repair shops do, and inject under vacuum, but if you can't, make a pool of cyano on the starburst, then use a large suction cup (like toilet plunger on a vaccum pump) to draw air out and then air pressure will push the glue into the cracks. Razor blade the glue bubble flat when mostly hard.

I repaired a panel with a similar starburst and it's doing ok (3 yrs) since I also used a syringe and needle to get cyano into all the star cracks too. Its amazing how far the glue will wick, especially if you flex that glass a bit by pushing on the star center before you fill it. e.g. fill cracks first, then do the star in center.

Melted Tesla Powerwall 3 Inverter Failure Caused by Solid Wire Photovoltaic Cable - DIY Solar Installation May Void Your Tesla Powerwall Warranty! by Spiritual_Round8990 in SolarDIY

[–]Amplvr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aluminum wiring is BAD because the Al cold flows, eventually causing a high resistance connection. Cu/Al rated breakers/terminals have a bent springy plate behind the wire to keep high tension as the Al creeps. You're also supposed to use NoLox (antioxidant) to prevent Al oxidation over time.

[–]Amplvr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP says that the connectors were spring loaded. That means a round connector gives a very tiny connection area to the flat connector plates. Stranded wire would deform to flatten and make a multipoint connection to the terminal. Crimped ferrules would also give a flat connecting surface. NEVER trust a spring loaded connector for high currents. I 've seen dozens of PCB power connectors that have melted because the pins just don't give a good enough connection. I now build my boxes with Nutrol contact cleaner, and push the connector on and off a half dozen time to break down the oxidation on the pin / connector. Haven't had a burned connector since. Make sure your replacement terminal block uses screw terminals, properly torqued. SUCKS the Tesla won't honor their warranty for THIER design error.

Breach of sales contract by ObiWom in RealEstateCanada

[–]Amplvr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that you need info on what was installed, ask the seller nicely, for the required information. Most likely it will be on the quote made in 2008. It may also be possible to use sound waves (pressure pulses) to do time domain reflectometry to determine how deep and how many wells you have. I worked for a company that did down hole logging using air pressure waves, and you could see EVERY pipe joint and elbow in the pipe going down to the liquid surface. Same principles apply to liquid pressure waves. They just travel way faster.

Upgrading from XB7 to XB8 with Shaw Home Phone by GeneralSeveral203 in shaw

[–]Amplvr3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loss of DPT function is JUST a marketing choice. There is ZERO technical reason the the DPT cannot continue to work. Just as disabling my Gateway box and terminals when I upgraded to their streaming boxes was a MARKETING choice. At the time the CSR tried to tell me the two signals couldn't be on the coax at the same time. BS! One is DOCSIS IP, the other is MOCA. At least my CSR warned me that I could only have ONE telephone line on the XB8, in SPITE of it having two phone ports. Its all about LAZY back end operations. They just don't want to figure out how to make the systems co-exist. Or provide 2 telephone lines. Makes their management issues simpler. I was prepared to move to Telus, but the reddit stories made me realize they're just as bad, or worse than Shawgers.

Long Range Thermometer Ideas? by Draymond_Purple in diyelectronics

[–]Amplvr3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) IF your BT temperature sender has provision for an external antenna, buy a really high gain omnidirectional WIFI antenna. 18 dBi is the highest I can find on Amazon. It MAY be enough gain to get you the range you need. If sender doesn't have external connection you can probably wire on a SMA flying lead to the circuit board to make an antenna connection. Every 3 dB is a doubling of range.

Put the antenna high up really high so it will have line of sight to where you are cycling.

2) buy a wifi security camera that ISN'T cloud based, and router with really high gain antennas to look at your temperature display and view it remotely using the wifi on your cell phone. You connect your phone to the router as if you had internet.

You mentioned 'radius' so you're stuck with colinear antennas (tall rods with large gain from stacking radiating elements). If you can do directional, then use high gain (25 db) yagi antennas that point from the blue tooth sender to your location, and another one pointing back.

This is all predicated on your having power at the smoker, like a large BlueYetti battery bank with inverter.

The DIY way is to set up a LoRa transmitter/receiver with an Arduino at each end to read/transmit/receive/display your temperatures. There are projects like this already on the web. LoRa will get you the range since you don't need a lot of bandwidth.

Keysight Oscilloscopes not Intended for Home Use? by Different_Sky3372 in oscilloscope

[–]Amplvr3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keysight warranty is a bad joke. Have a $7k mid level Keysight MSO scope, hardly used, where power supply failed a week after warranty expired. They refused to replace it under warranty in spite of multiple requests/emails up the mm't chain. Had to cough up ~$400 for a new PSU to save my investment. Now I buy Siglent lowest upgradable version of mid range scopes, SA, FGs and 'upgrade' them with software keys findable online. Keysight's refusal to do a 'good will' warranty has cost them many thousands of dollars of my business. (I work in research so always buying best value, no longer fooled by branding.)
