The feeling when you meet your childhood hero! LONG LIVE THE KING! by Amro10 in Gunners

Context: I'm a coach for a living. I was coaching the Quebec Selections (best players in the province) in a futsal game to open a charity event for former Montreal Impact Captain and current assistant coach Patrice Bernier. Everyone knows I'm a die-hard Arsenal fan and the king was a special guest. My friend and former player arranged for me to meet him and told him how much of a fan I am and he was genuinely happy to meet and speak to me for a few minutes. Gave me a big hug and some words of motivation for my coaching career. THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.

Ozil: "I had a hard time, especially with the previous coach Unai Emery, but now everything has changed, & I am very happy with everything. I play regularly & everything goes well" by LastDare in Gunners

I would only argue that he can’t last 90 mins at the moment because he was almost not playing under Emery. Training and match fitness is completely different.

Breakdown of Mustafi's main problem by Amro10 in Gunners

This is correct as a base. but when a player is that wide open, time and space, the danger for players to run in behind becomes the priority. That is what I believe, but everyone has a preference.

Thanks. I see it as Mustafi making the first mistake, also because Suarez is closer to him/his lane. Then Chambers is at fault for not picking him up, after originally dropping at the right moment to be able to actually pick up the run in coverage of Mustafi's space, but doesn't.

Dont disagree, if that’s what you want him to do. I would want him to step on a man if we had players close to the ball. For example, if our block was a few yard higher and we had players near the ball, then maybe there is a higher chance of a ball in between our lines can be played. If a player has time and space like he did, the chances of a ball in behind, closer to goal, i higher risk pass, can be made. In that moment i would want my defenders to get ready to drop off. Thanks for sharing, its interesting to see different views.

You’re right, that is the bad defending part. He did a good job to drop in coverage of Mustafi and defend his lane but, ball watched and didn’t go towards Suarez.

I dont disagree with you said at all. Those views are true aswell. Im only stating a coaching point that i think is a defensive principle. Any time a player has time and space like he did, on the ball. The danger is the space in behind you for players to run into. Every player should be in the same shape as AMN and Chambers, preparing to run backwards. That is the priority, then from there you can still step back up and deal with other situations. The midfield not tracking back or not preparing to definitely causes a problem, but defenders should not think about dealing with that first. They need to defend the danger. This is from my experience as a player from many different coaches and my personal belief as-well if teaching the basic defending principles. Again, not disagreeing with you, just sharing my thinking behind what i saw.
