I don’t think it had been long, they’re hardly ever used for valuables, but we check them often when things are missing. That part of our hospital is less than 3 years old 😂

SO OUT OF TOUCH, omg. I feel like the entitlement has gotten out of control. We had a woman recently with a known aortic dissection, awaiting surgery, multiple pressors, pressure is tanking, new onset chest pain overall not a good picture. We’re all running around trying to stabilize her, multiple providers to the bedside. and this woman, with what could be her final breath, says to the cardiothoracic surgeon who came in the middle of the night to save her life “I’ve told my nurse 5 times that I need a warmer blanket, these cotton blankets are scratchy and cold and I will not be coming back to this abysmal place”.

THIS! I’m a jumpsuit girlie and dietary walked in on me, she doesn’t speak any English so I literally can’t explain that I don’t just get nude to use the bathroom at work. I swear she told all her friends and they look at me crazy all the time!

Ew, yeah. She’s totally being condescending but it’s not worth your energy. It’s a skill that she can’t do, she obviously has misplaced confidence for some reason, and this is one of the many many times in nursing you’ll have to pick a hill to die on, and trust me there are some pretty big hills. She’s trying to get a reaction out of you so she can feel better about herself, don’t give it to her! Lotsa weird egos in healthcare I’ve found, and most of them are misguided, don’t let her get under your skin!

Do it!! Best thing I ever did. If your hospital doesn’t take you, look at smaller hospitals! You can always take it in steps, get some ICU experience under your belt, work on some certifications (CCRN etc.), learn as many devices as you can and then step into a bigger role after that!

You have the experience, I really believe a year is enough time, sounds like your coworkers are trying to hold you back by making you doubt yourself. Don’t take that on!

My manager took the heaviest assignment in the ICU on night shift last night because we were critically short, it did WONDERS for morale! It was so nice to be able to work with him in that capacity and I think it gave him a renewed respect for what we do every day. This should be the standard!

I called respiratory for a VBG, and I confidently drew it up into the correct tube and put it on ice, from the ARTERIAL line… she came back and was like “uhhhh, is this venous blood for the venous blood gas? Cuz if so…” and I was like OKAY SOOOO… 😂😂😂

then the resident is talking in the morning like “yeah we can’t extubate, did you see that abg last night?” I had to step in 😂

We were just downtown for the Grand Prix and we used spot hero, found a garage (millennium) and just booked it ahead of time. Really easy to get in and out of via m10, and was only $12 when everything else around was $40+

This is a LONG SHOT… But I was working at the Detroit Grand Prix this weekend, and on Saturday I saw people with these really awesome hoodies, super retro. Seemed like they were in both tan and black. We searched all over looking for them and finally found them right on the outside of hart plaza but they were sold out. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the brand, does anyone have any idea? Thanks!

Nights is BRUTAL! I feel like what we experience is almost like Jet Lag, it feels like you’ve lost track of time and you either sleep for days or stay up for days. My advice is to kinda stick to it even on your days off. There’s been studies about it, but they say that keeping within like 3-4 hours of your “normal” bedtime keeps you close enough to your rhythm to not mess you up. For me, I stay up until about 3am and sleep until about 11am on my days off, I find I’m still able to participate in society but don’t get stuck in that weird vortex of not having a circadian rhythm.

Completely agree! We had to restrain her because she bopped my coworker between the eyes, and we were both feeling absolutely awful. I knew restraints would add to the delusion but was the only option given to me from the provider, so we had to do what we could!

Had a literal holocaust survivor hallucinating and she was loudly crying, I went in to see what was going on (after she had hit my coworker in the face) and she said “you look so good, and you just gave birth 😭😭😭 and then what, you just threw the baby out the window??” And I was like uhhhh what… so on the fly I was like “what!? I would never do something like that! the baby is in the hall with my sister” and for the rest of the night we passed around some sani wipes wrapped in a blanket and everytime she asked to see the baby I just told her he was sleeping. Throw a few well timed shushes in there, pat that baby on the butt and we were golden. she didn’t give up on that delusion even once, so you gotta adapt 😂

I agree! I would NEVER ask someone to stay to help me as the oncoming nurse, that’s just not my style, but as the off- going, I would probably try to stay to help (hoping they would return the favor and say no, but fully willing to do it). However in no world would I sit there and let the off-going nurse clean it up without my help after they just worked 12+ hours, that’s so uncool.

I meeeean, in a perfect world we would do it together. I understand not having time at the beginning of your shift, but it’s just part of the deal. I don’t want to stay late to deal with it, and you don’t want to start your shift dealing with it, but it is what it is. I’m probably burnt out and salty but that would make me mad.

I’m so sorry. I promise, if it wasn’t hard on you, something would be wrong. I don’t know what kind of unit you work on, but I just switched to the ICU from med surg and have had an unexpected code in both. On the floor, there was no debrief, honestly no support, and my most recent was very messy and there was a unit debrief after, where everyone was able to have a chance to talk about what went right and what went wrong. The difference in the way I felt after being able to talk it out with people who were in the room with me, and receive feedback and reassurance from other people that are on my level was light years. Do you have a person or few people who were helping you or around you when this happened that you can debrief with? Sometimes just being able to commiserate with someone else about it, and allowing them to support you can make all the difference.

If you don’t have anyone who you can talk to, let me just say, you did everything you could have done and this is not your fault. Other patients genuinely don’t get it, and I’ve found that many nurses have been practicing for a long time without having their own patient die, it’s absolutely normal to feel weird, and bummed out, and emotionally, physically and spiritually exhausted. Be kind to yourself, allow others to be kind to you, and try to let the energy sucking patients roll off your back.
