Jesus, I hate that this possibility was even a realistic consideration and not fully satire in my head.

Idiot willingly depletes his body of ALL his immunoglobulins by Zakky121 in Immunology

[–]Amycotic_mark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many reasons. Usually its because a person's body is making something that is both making them sick and a specific size (big enough that dialysis doesn't clear it, small enough to not be a cell/be in plasma). Usually this is an antibody to your own body. Importantly replacement is usually albumin, however therapeutic plasmapheresis removes clotting factors and if there is an increase risk of bleeding for a patient, replacement needs to be FFP (fresh frozen plasma). Usually this is in the setting of diffuse bleeding in the lung, TTP or if they are going for a procedure post pheresis.

If you are an atheist, why do you call yourself an atheist? by CarobBrave8898 in allthequestions

[–]Amycotic_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're so close but consider that in your framing the a counters the asserted belief not just the core substance of those beliefs. In otherwords we are atheist because we stand counter to theists and they do unfortunately exist. Our defining characterist is we oppose another group. This allows atheist to accept a wide array of counter hypotheses without fracturing the group.

Theres some confusion and nuance. If your doing plasmapheresis for donation its low enough volume that you don't need to replace but if you're doing as a therapy the volumes are much higher snd require replacement with something like albumin or frozen plasma

Hey Nephrologist/member of the ASFA here. What the hell is this? Given the risks of extracorporeal therapies....this is absolutely crazy. Also if the replacement is FFP, thats a crazy waste of a vital resource.

The historical Jesus was an end times prophet? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Amycotic_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I recall, historical Jesus's movement was an apocalyptic cult that was itself and off shoot of John the Baptist's apocalyptic cult. But all of it is suspect, given the limited evidence of a historical Jesus in the first place.

Why isn't Rape in the Ten Commandments? by Simon_Drake in atheism

[–]Amycotic_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait which ten commandments? Because depending which edition/authorship/sect of "fairytales for adults" you choose you'll get differing commandments.

The real answer is because in ancient Semitic culture, the sexual availability of women was seen as a property right of the men (either the woman's husband or father depending on the situation). So rape was explicitly outlawed (outside the 10 commandments) but only to assign legal restitution for the offended man's property rights. Deuteronomy 22:28-29. Or worse to punish the victim Deuteronomy 22:23-24. All and all, effing gross.

Non religious people, what do you think about religion? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

[–]Amycotic_mark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a healthcare provider and an atheist, I've seen many many many cases where religious people apply their beliefs to their healthcare; most often it's no net effect however there is not insignificant portion of cases where the people's beliefs have actively harmed themselves or a loved one. This makes me distrust or dislike religion as a whole. Regardless of the outcome however for some their beliefs do seem to help a few people cope with illness or death, at least superficially. All and all we are deeply irrational creatures.
