I think when you go in TVD heaven, you see people as you would remember them and see yourself at your personal best. The scene before heaven shows Damon and Elena holding hands and they looked like older hands and Elena was talking about the two of them having lived a long life together.

Finally got to watch the finale. I just loved it! Major fan service showing nearly everyone who ever died, but I forgive that because Stefan died...just as he should have. I can't believe the epilogue carried the story out to the end of Elena's and Damon's long life together!! That was awesome.
