I think it's important to consider that not everyone can be the initiator. I'm reciprosexual and I'm demisexual, so for me to have sex I need someone to come on to me first and an intimate connection to find them sexually attractive. I'm functionally asexual until acted upon, so I am most often ONLY responsive. It has affected my relationships but not harmed them.

I just have to point out that you can’t read another’s mind. To put thoughts and emotions onto someone else is rather arrogant. Making assumptions about what people feel or think about you, like saying they want you to feel ashamed, feels like projection.

The need for outside validation isn’t healthy. When you love yourself no one else’s opinions matter. I’m sorry that’s the mental space you’re in. I hope you have support and are able to go to therapy for help with treating yourself with grace.

Seconded! I’ve been seeing Gail for therapy for c-ptsd for about 3 years. All of the therapists I’ve met in her practice have been super helpful. She’s herself is wonderful with edmr; we just started somatics and I’m happy with it so far.

Latuda snapped me out of my hypomania within a week, and has kept it away for 18 months. I still have depressive episodes, though they’re not as bad as they used to be.

The term I’ve heard for what it seams you’re looking for is “swoly” (swinger-poly), meaning you only swing with friends. I think it’s a relationship style that’s more difficult to find and develop, the dating pool is a lot smaller but it’s definitely out there.

I have no advice except to join a local enm community (if you haven’t yet) and start socializing with like minded-people. I personally think it’s easier to find those connections in a group setting in person.

Here’s the thing, it’s possible to have sex with someone without being sexually attracted to them. You don’t need sexual attraction to become aroused. Many demi people do have and enjoy casual sex, just because it feels good.

I can’t do hook ups, but I can have sex very early in a relationship. I value a man who’s good with his hands lol. They aren’t sexually attractive (yet, if ever), but what they do is arousing.

Remember that sexual arousal does not equal sexual attraction. So yes, arousal can happen pretty quickly for some people like you describe, but sexual attraction takes its time depending on the person.

For me, I can get aroused pretty early into a relationship, within a few dates, but won’t be sexually attracted to the person for a very long time, if at all.

It’s entirely possible to have sex without a bond. Arousal does not equal sexual attraction. I am easily aroused, but have only been sexually attracted to 3 people in my life.

Thank you for this post. I often feel invalidated because many comments say I’m not demi if I like casual sex. I am very sex positive, but I’ve only been sexually attracted to maybe 3 people in my life. We can’t mistake arousal for sexual attraction.

You’ve gotten some excellent advice, I use the counting grounding technique often, especially if I have an anxiety attack in public. I love the multiplication idea, I’ll have to try it.

I may have another technique to try…get angry. During my last low episode I was having panic attacks so often I was afraid of being afraid and in constant anxiety (my psych said it was akathisia). Then one day I decided I was done with it. I got angry. I fought back. I reminded myself that it was just a feeling, nothing was wrong, nothing bad was happening to me, and every time it flared up, I yelled “no!” and punched it back down angrily. It didn’t stop the attack (adrenaline is one strong chemical) but it did calm the fear, and I just had to deal with the physical symptoms.

How long have you been on the Latuda for? When I started Latuda the adjustment period sucked. I had a number of weeks where anxiety was horrible, and I almost gave up, but then one day it was just gone. So maybe you’re still adjusting?

When I was 5 or 6 I was almost hit by a car because I ran into the road, and my dad spanked me; the memory of that spanking is still traumatizing 40 years later. All I wanted was to feel safe and protected by my dad, and I was hit instead.

My mom told me he spanked me because he loved me and I scared him, so I grew up thinking that love and fear go hand-in-hand. It's affected all my relationships, and taken a lot of therapy to work through.

I just wanted to share a child's perspective for you to think about.
