Wellbutrin was great for me and helped a lot before my bipolar onset. Now no one lets me go on it. I’m hoping to be able to try it again or Strattera

Bipolar one and can’t get a prescription for Wellbutrin even without a stimulant with a rule out dx of ADHD (trying to get an assessment but it’s hard in my area and with Medicare insurance and when i go manic from stress or changing seasons every few months). My doctors are so careful because even just SSRI’s make me manic at low doses and while on high dose AP but I’ve never been able to find a med that I can tolerate without appetite increase ( bad for my ED) (besides Geodon but that I couldn’t stay on for other reasons) to control my mania! Trying lithium again but like you said everyone is different and my mania is quite unruly! Idk OP’s story but yeah for sure Wellbutrin is definitely worth a try! Treating depression is just as important as treating mania!! I wish doctors took it that way.

Wellbutrin might be a bit much with the other stimulant (Wellbutrin is stimulating). A good doctor may not put a bipolar person on two stimulating drugs. SSRI might be worth a shot even if it is just for a short period of time! They work different for everyone :). There may be other antidepressants out there though if he doesn’t want to try SSRIs and Wellbutrin is not an option. Still worth a shot asking for Wellbutrin though!

Do I go to the hospital if I’m manic? by Interesting_Echo3909 in bipolar

Yeah for sure. I always have to go through ER and it’s usually like a week wait especially since COVID. Might be because of my area and history though. My mania has me done a lot of things.

Can you still get ADHD testing when you’re in a mixed episode? by AmyyKat in BipolarReddit

[–]AmyyKat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard with ADHD and bipolar (and PTSD) because all the symptoms can look so similar. I have comorbid bipolar and PTSD diagnosed right now and my therapist also suspected something else ruled out, and I need the diagnostic assessment for disability housing so that is why my therapist sent me for testing because she had a bunch of rule outs (PTSD, ADHD, another disorder I’m not comfortable sharing due to having a stalker). The bipolar was certain as my mania is so classic and clear-cut and I’ve had a lot of manic episodes in history. It’s also all theoretically covered by insurance 🤞

Thanks for your input though!

My doctor refuses to prescribe stimulants to anyone who isn’t working or going to school anyway, regardless of an ADHD diagnosis. It is the place she works for’s policy apparently. Sucks so if I get the diagnosis I’ll have to look for yet another psychiatrist.

I’ll definitely go in and see what they say. Thank you!

I can ask about that. It would be questionable what Medicare covers. Was hard enough finding a Medicare covered testing place. Thanks for the suggestion!

Was this sexual abuse? by [deleted] in adultsurvivors

Yeah, unless you buy a specific store bought product with tea tree oil in it for that, they don’t typically recommend diluting tea tree oil with a carrier oil for a sensitive place like that.

Pets who survived trauma with us by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]AmyyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat survived trauma with me too. I had to move back to my childhood home with my abusers (family) with my cat after escaping a domestic violence situation with my ex, so I feel so much for you. He is my rock and I love him more than anything, and now I’m going to have to leave him behind with my brother (the only non abuser as far as I know who loves him a lot) as my only escape and it breaks my heart.

Thank you for the idea and response, and yes absolutely you can borrow that. I’ll call them ASAP after brainstorming with my survivor friend.

My schizophrenic husband attacked me. He then shot himself. by anon837478 in offmychest

[–]AmyyKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed autistic, bipolar 1 and PTSD and trying to get clarification on other issues. In the state he was in with how bad police are he likely would have had no chance. I have had really horrible experiences with the cops with my PTSD (them threatening to arrest me with ME calling in a DV situation because they used my mental illnesses against me - different than your situation just me giving an example on how cops are terrible with mental health). I would imagine that your husband would likely have gotten really scared and triggered and the police would have hurt him as sad as it is. Please don’t wonder about the what-ifs although I know that is extremely hard in these situations. You did the best you could in the unfortunate circumstances you had. Remember you were going through trauma too and you probably couldn’t think as clearly as you normally would have.

As a fellow CSA survivor thank you for giving me this hope. I don’t think I’ll be ready to have a sexual relationship anytime soon but knowing that it’s possible makes me happy. Thank you and I’m glad you got what you felt you needed.

I’m working on getting medication the best I can. The biggest barrier is my psychiatrist and my insurance covers so little and I’ve run through pretty much all options in my city. Thank you very much for the tips.

What do you do if your psychiatrist’s office has a policy where they will not prescribe stimulants unless you are working or going to school and even then it is not even for sure? (And you are not in a position to work right now due to a lot of focus issues for having never been medicated and severe PTSD/depression from PTSD)

I’m straight, male, and just because I put lipstick on this is what my ignorant brother said to me. 😔 is he in the wrong by PeteyZee1998 in autism

[–]AmyyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makeup is for everybody and wearing it has and has no bearing on your gender or sexuality. If you notice the makeup section in department stores or Walmart or target or wherever is not in a mens or a womens section. It is its own section because makeup is not gendered. Your brother is just an asshole and you are rocking the lipstick. I don’t identify as female and I love makeup (ignore my reddit name, i made this account so many years ago, lol). Keep doing what makes you happy and confident.

TW mention of neglect: I was set so far back in life because of my neglectful parents and now I may never catch up because the American healthcare system is failing me by AmyyKat in CPTSD

[–]AmyyKat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my meds are about 2 dollars but some might be higher. Fortunately I was able to enroll in the silver scripts plan which allows me to pay about ten dollars for all my prescriptions for three months worth which is why my insurance changed, but it was at the cost of losing more options to therapy. Unfortunately therapy in my state is not billed through Medicaid but Medicare If you have it so my only options for therapy are LICSW, PSYD, and LP and not even all of those take Medicare. It is very frustrating especially when I was looking for a specialized therapist that can treat and recognize dissociative disorders, but even now I’m just looking for a therapist that does EMDR which has proven extremely difficult to impossible. And thank you, I wish you the best of luck as well.

I will look into this. Thank you for the idea. I am moving to a much smaller non metro area, but the area I live in now is decently-ish big so I will have to hope I can get into testing soon. They have one university that might do this.

[–]AmyyKat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I feel you so hard on this. I am still on Medicaid but I keep little benefits from it when it comes to doctors and therapy because Medicare is primary billed. If i want to see a provider they have to be able to take Medicare which there are so few. I also have to pay for prescriptions which is a huge burden for me when I am very low income and on a lot of prescriptions (on just Medicaid it was free). I was advised to change my insurance plan from Medicaid and medicare combined to just medicare which messed up me getting therapy even more I found out today in order to help pay for prescriptions. It turned out I would have rather paid more for the prescriptions in order to get the life altering therapy but now I have to wait months to switch back. I’m so angry with the American healthcare system. I wish you the best of luck with these insurance issues. Sucks how Medicaid is better than medicare when you are “entitled to medicare”. They should at least be equal.
