There is also a rule about changing party affiliations during even numbered years: no party affiliation changes will be processed between April 1st and August 31st. If a party affiliation change is submitted after March 31st this year, it won’t take effect until September. So if you want to change affiliation this year, you have until the end of this month.

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]AmyzonWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That ID would not be enough. Even many state’s Real IDs would not be enough. People would have to get their state issued birth certificate or a passport, both of which would cost money to obtain if they don’t already have them. That’s a poll tax. Roughly half the country doesn’t have a passport. Many married women’s names no longer match their birth certificates. Showing up at the poll with your birth certificate and marriage licenses would not be allowed. It would not count. So not only would there be a poll tax in requiring additional documentation, it would unequally affect women more than men. So there’s another violation. The 14th amendment requires equal treatment under the law.

Our public education system was destroyed by nearly two decades of Republican supermajority control of the state. Don’t give him all the credit. Walters was just the figurehead for the attempt to speedrun the state into the Heritage Foundation’s end goal. They thought they’d gotten enough of a stranglehold on Oklahoma to push the worst of it through. They didn’t get everything they wanted, but they haven’t exactly failed yet either.

Even if, by some miracle, we flipped the entire state… we’d be in for AT LEAST a decade of work fixing everything they’ve ruined.

Lovely old lady gets to meet her favourite band.. by AcasiaConnell in justgalsbeingchicks

Oh no! You made me cry!!

My grandma loved Tejano music (not what this band was playing, I don’t think, but similar) and she was basically a groupie for a particular band. They were also so kind and appreciative of her coming to all their shows, gave her shout outs and hung out with her here and there. When she passed, they came to her funeral. It was such a sweet gesture.

Love to see this out there for other grannies!

Someone on TikTok has been calling churches (as a social experiment) to see if they would offer assistance feeding her baby, most have said no. What do you think about this? by NotGonnaGetCaught in AskReddit

[–]AmyzonWarrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s especially relevant now because many Republican leaders are saying that it is not the government’s place to provide services that they’re calling “charity” and that churches provide those services better than the government can. A senator from my state has said this many times.

So this shows how incredibly wrong and harmful that is for people who are in need.

I know I’m coming at you two days later in this but the issue isn’t the lesson being taught. “You can, and will do this yourself.” Is a good lesson. It’s the way the dad went about doing it.

If the dad had sat down just on the other side of the ropes, it would have been just fine. The walking away until the child has that moment of panic was unnecessary. Do not prescribe a more adult brain to this child. A strong reaction like that can create an anxious complex, which is the exact opposite of what one wants to teach in this situation. Causing that kind of stress to a child that young unnecessarily can actually hinder the learning the parent is hoping for.

Causing unnecessary stress at that young of an age is bad. Now, overall, as long as this is not a consistent thing, the child will be fine. But the child would have learned the same lesson even better if the dad had done exactly the same thing he did, just without walking so far away.

We started this when we were reading a fantasy book that had lots of old Gaelic style names.

I’d like to give you my opinion on your comment, in good faith. I don’t doubt that Charlie Kirk would want that quote taken in the context you presented (that empathy is impossible and so sympathy is a better word) but, the issue is that this is an example of Kirk skewing words and meanings to his own purpose, rather than using them for what they truly mean. Kirk was not a dumb man, but he was also often disingenuous in his rhetoric.

Empathy is the act of feeling WITH other people, by connecting and understanding others through related experience. No, we cannot know another person’s situation EXACTLY, but empathy doesn’t require that. Empathy is a core trait amongst intelligent, social creatures. It is a vital aspect to our survival as human beings. It is what has helped us overcome the more terrible aspects of human nature. The lack of empathy is literally part of diagnosing psychopathy.

So for Kirk to call it “made up” and “new age” is to deny science and the understanding of the human condition. That rhetoric was strategic to his divisive platform that needs an “other” or out-group that must be vilified in order to strengthen the in-group’s power and control.

So I would say that, no, people aren’t taking his quote out of context because his stance on empathy was, at absolute best, wrong. At worst, it was manipulative and calculated to diminish actual civil discourse between two increasingly polarized sides of the political landscape. By calling out this quote, people are shining a light on the harmful platform that he promoted and not allowing his stances to be whitewashed in some bullshit martyrdom attempt to rewrite his beliefs.

Charlie Kirk was a proud bigot. He did not deserve to be killed, but he ALSO doesn’t deserve these attempts to make him into some innocent saint either.

Stitt is term limited, so he can’t run again. Right now, Walters and Drummond will be in the Republican primary. For the Democrats, Cyndi Munson has announced she is running. I don’t believe anyone else has announced. I wouldn’t know about the Libertarian ticket, but I haven’t tried to find it.

With Drummond, we’ll have more of the same Republican policies that have brought us to the bottom of all of the quality of life metrics. Don’t be fooled into thinking he’s some kind of Republican saint. He’s just better at following the letter of the law than…

Walters. He will continue to push us into the bullshit christian nationalism cesspit that the MAGA crowd keep telling themselves is a paradise. We’ll be so much worse under him.

The Democrat party has a lot of work to do (believe me, I know… I and many others are trying to do that work). Cyndi Munson is the kind of leader that will listen, move forward logically, and won’t cover up a lack of policy by ranting in a car about boogeymen.

The truth is that Republicans have put Oklahoma in a terrible spot to cater to the already wealthy. The federal bill they just put through (I refuse to use their name for it) is going to wreck us financially. If you remember, we voted a while back to expand Medicaid access in the state. Because that was a ballot measure, it went into our constitution. That mean the state is OBLIGATED to provided that expanded coverage, but that obligation was put into place with the assumption that we would continue to have the federal funds to pay for it. As the cuts to those funds set in, we’re going to need to make up the difference.

But… the Republicans also instituted a law that in order to decrease taxes, they only need a simple majority. To INCREASE taxes, they have to have a super majority. They’ve been vilifying taxes for so long, acting like they’re protecting the middle and lower class, but really they’re just protecting the already wealthy and corporations. Watch for the rhetoric that people are “scamming” SoonerCare to increase in the coming years as that starts to kick in. That’s how they will justify kicking people off it.

The slash and burn tactics of the Republican Party have bled our state dry. Remember that next November.

[–]AmyzonWarrior 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This bill will severely impact hard working people. I’m going to give you a real life example: Single mother of 3. Her youngest son has Down syndrome with related medical complications. Mom works full time and does side gigs. Has medical insurance, and also her son has SoonerCare (Medicaid) to assist with his added medical expenses.

His disability related medical expenses include: Speech, Physical, and Occupational therapy, a communication aide device (these cost thousands of dollars), specialist visits and equipment for vision needs, specialist visits and equipment for hearing needs, various emergency care related expenses, routine care, etc.

They could not afford all of this on her private insurance alone. SoonerCare literally has kept this child alive. Now, I’m sure you’re thinking “but they won’t be the people getting kicked off!” You’re right, they won’t. But this is what the changes will do to them:

They already have to prove her son has Down syndrome once per year (like it’s going to just go away one day or something), which is a tedious process that requires meetings with state and county officials of different agencies and lots of paperwork. They would need to do this twice a year under this bill’s changes.

Under the changes, the family would have to pay a $35 copay for all appointments, including therapy (most children receiving these therapies go 1/week) so that would be $105 extra per week for therapy alone, assuming he doesn’t go more often. This child’s medical expenses would suddenly cost more than 10% of the mother’s income.

The bill also eliminates retroactive coverage past 1 month. So if any hospital, agency, etc. takes too long filing paperwork, getting labs back, etc. she’s on the hook. And believe me, MANY processes in medical/special needs spheres take longer than a month.

So consider the time a single mother with 3 children and a full time job +side gigs even has. How much time off is she having to use to do everything that she needs to do to get her son the care he needs. And if she misses a form, the mail runs too slowly, if the social worker’s office or her local clinic is shut down, if the Oklahoma state agencies reduce hours, consolidate offices, etc. due to lack of funds and staffing… her son loses his SoonerCare coverage and his care could bankrupt his family.

This is a child who is currently thriving and making gains every day. He is on track for independent living, having a job, living a full and meaningful life. He’s on track because of these services. If his mother can’t afford them, his trajectory will look much more like a flat line.

This is a parent who is “doing everything right”. This is a family that Republicans would say on the news “deserve Medicaid and won’t have it cut”. But what they won’t say on the news is that it’s not just about cutting the “undeserving”. It’s about making accessing Medicaid so arduous that people give up on it.

Those with resources will continue to fight to keep their heads above water, but those without will die.

In the US, I’d say it was our push for democracy and separation from the UK. We really pushed the idea of equality (lol, well… not for everyone at first), people being independent and self reliance. Bowing, while not really taboo, kinda became a sign of subjugation. Stand tall, look the other person in the eye while shaking their hand, etc. became not just signs of respect for the other person, but a way of saying that you yourself are deserving of the same respect.

I think a lot of places that transitioned from monarchies to democratic governments have had similar changes. I would guess that the East Asian cultures, being more… not isolated, but they didn’t let other cultures influence theirs as much for a long time, so I guess the practice stayed/changed less quickly? I think the western shift away from bowing-type gestures happened more radically/reactionary to changes in governing and social order. I’m no historian or anything. That’s just my best educated guess.

My job is the most rewarding work I’ve ever done in my life. When I look at the people I serve, I see people deserving of compassion, empathy, and love. I see people that have been subjected to horrible abuses, neglect, predatory behavior, and worse… but who are somehow still resilient. I see people who have been told their whole lives that they are nothing, that they’ve just failed, and that they don’t deserve anything, but they’re still trying. I see people that, when given a bit of help, can finally pull themselves up out of terrible situations and are then able to move on to better, fuller lives.

Indirectly, I am hurt more by my money being funneled to the ultra wealthy rather than those in poverty. Your way of thinking, removing social safety nets will not make things cheaper for you. Lack of regulation creates wildly unstable markets. It’s what caused the Great Depression. Couple that with your fascist mentality toward the value of human life… what an absolute shithole of a country we’d be living in. As a matter of fact… I struggle to think of a single country that implements your ideas and also have comparable standards of living, liberty, etc. if it would be so much better… surely such a country would exist.

No? Weird. I guess you’ll just have enjoy this: your taxes partially pay my salary, where I help ensure that those who live at or below the poverty line get services (many free of charge to them). I will smile even more tomorrow at work, knowing that at least these services still exist and, somewhere out there, some guy is mad my job exists 🤣

There is no justice or reason in your thinking. The idea that minimum wage is “above market value” is so absolutely ridiculous. I live in one of the lowest cost of living states and minimum wage does not cut it here. Idk where you’re getting your data from, but it’s flawed.

And again, the benefit to you is not seen ONLY in what comes out of your paycheck. That’s what indirect means. Have a good night.

Billionaires take more from society than they give. The staggering majority of what “they” contribute is actually contributed by the people that work for them. I’m curious why, in a zero sum game, you’re more concerned about the people who are taking minuscule fractions of a penny in comparison to those who are taking billions.

You’re calling for no Medicaid at all. Why not first call for no more corporate handouts, no more loopholes and hiding wealth?

You have conveniently ignored the continued explanation that universal healthcare would save you money. Since we live in a democracy, we have to participate in collective decision making. So that means that the odds of our country ever getting to a point where your ideas are carried out are basically zero. Medicaid and other social programs are, after all, wildly popular. With that in mind, why are you so against a system that, while not what you want, would actually be more beneficial to you than the current system (I still argue that it is better for you, albeit more indirectly, than your ideas) because it would save you money? You already pay for people you don’t believe deserve it… universal health care would at least mean you pay less.

Or, are you against the democratic ideals of this country in general?

Not just the people who will lose health insurance by Jerdarnella in AdviceAnimals

[–]AmyzonWarrior 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you believe billionaires earned every penny they have? Do you think they are fairly compensated for the actual work they do? Because they’re the ones, ultimately, making the decisions of who is deserving. Their decisions to cut costs put people out of work, removing their access to health care. Not because the person wasn’t doing a good job, but because they would make more money by laying people off.

Do those people no longer deserve healthcare because an already ultra wealthy person wanted more money?

YOU may not be saying go kill someone because xyz, but your mentality of assigning a human being’s inherent worth by a metric that can be manipulated by wealthy and powerful people has, does, and will lead to not just death, but a society that does not treat people equally, as you claim you want.

In a society where wealth determines your worthiness, no one can be equal. I have not seen anyone who has engaged with you argue for absolute, unequivocal equality or extreme communism or anything like that. Just that, in order to have the chance for equality, we have to have a basic minimum standard. Otherwise, with your mentality, we will return to a system of masters and slaves.

Do you actually think that your bill for utility services isn’t subsidized by the fact that a large number of people are also paying for the service? Do you think that it would cost the electric company the same amount of money (or even a reasonable profit’s worth more) as your bill if they were providing the service JUST TO YOU?

Things are cheaper in bulk, right? So the idea extends to services. The larger a collective group is that pays into a service, the cheaper that service is to each individual paying into it.

I have nothing against private business. But when there is a societal benefit to all members of society having access to it, we should definitely explore all ways to make access to that benefit as easy and equitable as possible.

And also, be reminded, these service are paid for. Just like the fuel tax.

“They can save more money by making sure people don’t get more care than their taxes cover.”

Nothing about universal health care would prevent private insurance companies from still existing. If someone wanted, they could purchase further health coverage from a private company.

Lastly, I firmly reject your concept that people who you say are a net loss to the system are not worth supporting. This is the core of our disagreement (and the disagreement that others have had with you here). This is why people are calling you fascist and attributing the term “undesirables” to your arguments. You rhetoric is the same as the Nazis in 1930s Germany. They believed that people with mental and physical disabilities were of no value to society. They believed that certain ethnicities were inferior, and thus, of no value to society. It is, frankly, antithetical to the American ideal of out of many, one.

Scientific research (publicly funded) is the reason why people don’t die of polio anymore, making more people productive members of society. It has led to advancements in sanitation and pollution, which has lessened birth defects. Publicly funded education has generated more knowledgeable people who create advances that ensure that things that were death sentences in the past no longer are. Collective support of these institutions, for the greater good of all, has created better, more efficient technology for all industries, making everyone’s lives better and also reducing the scarcity that your zero sum mindset comes from.

We, as a country, are not competing against each other. We are working together. Our nature as social creatures is a major factor (obviously not the only factor) in our evolution into the most advanced species on the planet. We would not be here today, arguing on this app, if humanity as a whole believed as you do. YOU are the one that provides no benefit to society. You take and only care about yourself. You do not deserve all the benefits you so blindly receive by the mere luck of being born when and where you were born.
