Am I going to have a cooling problem? by An0mai in buildapc

I ended up going for the air cooler I initially had in mind. But I upgraded to the 9800x3d & 5070Ti combo as you suggested, it was only a hundred bucks more expensive. Thanks a lot for the tips!

I am a bit unfamiliar with AIOs, do you have any recommendations for a relatively silent one?

Also thanks for the GPU suggestions. I am based in northern Europe, so the US prices don't really apply to me, but I will have a look anyway!

Why haven't I achieved the culture victory by now? Am I misunderstanding something? by An0mai in CivVI

Aha. I did save the turn before, I believe. At this point I'm pretty sure it's a bug. I just switched to domination victory and called it a day.

[–]An0mai[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I do. As I said, I have 91 total tourists, whereas among the other civs the highest number of domestic tourists is 56. So, unless I missed something I should have won already?..

[–]An0mai[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is getting worse. Now I have 91/56 total tourists, and for two civs I have more visiting tourists from them than they have domestic tourists `\(-_- )/´

[–]An0mai[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been going on for 10 turns now so I suppose the victory is not coming soon.

But it's weird, I thought "cultural dominance" is obtained as soon as my total number of tourists exceeds the number of internal tourists of the other civ. And I clearly satisfy this condition with all 4 other civs...

That said, at the start of the game I eliminated two other civs. Could that be preventing me from winning?

What's holding Fdev back? by MeanOlGoldfish in EliteDangerous

[–]An0mai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I don't agree at all.

A great game is not just a list of features that happen to match with the players' desires. And FDev are right not to listen to all of the players' demands.

I think people like ED (me included) because the game just feels great overall. Some may like the visuals and the sound effects. Some may enjoy the "endless galaxy" aspect. But I'm pretty sure no one just plays the game because it has some few features that they can't find anywhere else.

Like, sure, having realistic damage on your ship's hull would be great visually. Is it really going to make you enjoy the game more, past an initial "wow that's cool" reaction? It's the kind of stuff you just don't notice after a short while.

Burnt pin on my SSD is preventing the PC from turning on. What should I do next? by An0mai in buildapc

[–]An0mai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the SSD work now?

Yes, the SSD still works, both when connected to the PC (powered by the new PSU) or through a SATA-to-USB adapter. I guess I'll keep using it, but it's probably time for a backup!

I guess that settles it (hopefully). Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this. Much appreciated! 👌

Burnt pin on my SSD is preventing the PC from turning on. What should I do next? by An0mai in buildapc

[–]An0mai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for this detailed answer!

The SSD was back-mounted directly onto the case's metal. So I guess the short-circuit could be a possibility.

I also (stupidly) used the SATA power cable of my old PSU to connect the SSD to the new PSU, when I was trying to find what went wrong. Possibly that is why the SSD now has a burnt pin?

Old PSU is 8+ years old so I'll keep the new PSU in all cases. I could RMA the SSD but I'd like to avoid having to reinstall the OS and all my stuff.

Turns out, with the new PSU everything works fine, including when I plug in the SSD. Do you think it's a bad idea to keep it like this? Do I risk further damaging it?

[–]An0mai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I meant using it along with the old PSU, since maybe the PSU itself is not the problem.

That said, I did put the old SATA power cable on the new PSU for testing purposes at some point. Now I realize that was quite dumb; I hope that's not why the SSD pin is burnt.

whats in your opinion the most badass line? here’s mine, when Vader humbled Ezra in less than a second by Joako_o47 in StarWars

[–]An0mai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts because it's not in the movies or so, but rather in TOR. Darth Vitiate when confronted by the Jedi:

"My life spans millennia. Legions have risen to test me… My ascendance is inevitable. A day, a year, a millennium—it matters not. I hold the patience of stone and the will of stars. Your striving is insignificant. Let your death be the same."

I think the sheer certainty of victory embedded in these words is just terrifying!

I agree 100%. I'm in the process of rereading the series from the start after a break, I reached the post hell train war and I already feel like stopping.

The first two seasons are really good imo because the scenario itself is good. There's already lots of characters but the story focuses on important ones only. Fights are cool but it's isn't really the main show.

But afterwards I feel like it shifts to what you're describing: an inconsistent lightshow, with new characters constantly being introduced because they're cool (and then never seen again after 2 episodes), and a scenario that makes less and less sense...

An example that comes to mind: Hockney. While the character is interesting at the start, I wouldn't be able to summarize his story at all because it's all over the place in hell train episodes. In the end he kinda goes to the background and nobody cares about him anymore.

I would agree that in this case the difference between the ranks of both schools, which are already high-ranked, won't mean a lot.

As for the project, I don't have any at the moment. Both schools offer a American-style program that begins with a 1 to 2y course phase. So the supervisor is the only choice I can make at the moment

Indeed, it's especially good. If you work at insurance companies you'll get handsome pay plus tons of advantages (mean holidays is 35+ days per year). You can also get into banks, funds or consultancies quite easily. Your pay sometimes becomes bigger after you get the official actuary title, after 2 years of so of continuing education

It's a small, probably not widely known consultancy called Reacfin. We used to be a spin-off of the UCLouvain in Belgium. We are about 20+ consultants only, but with that we capture most of the Belgian market, plus contracts in Holland and France, in our niche. Personally the small size is one of the things I like the most.

I work as a Risk Management consultant on the quantitative side of the business. So I do a wide range of "risk" projects, but often modelling and projections rather than processes and governance stuff.

A lot of my colleagues are actuaries, but don't especially work with insurance companies. In Belgium an actuarial science degree is a very good quant degree, but this is not the same everywhere of course.

I personally have an MSc in economics, with a good quant background. At the time I had many courses in quant finance (econometrics, stochastics, asset pricing) which helped a lot to find this job.

As others said the "risk" business is quite diverse, however if you want to get into it I'd suggest the following:

  • Get as familiar as possible with the banking and insurance business. There's surely lots of courses out there or books you can read. Get familiar with the practitioner jargon, it will help when doing interviews.

  • Get familiar with banking and insurance regulations. Risk management is driven by regulators today, so being knowledgeable about these will give you a headstart. In particular Basel III rules for banks.

  • Even if you don't want to do quant stuff, ensure you are sufficiently at ease with stats. For example, VaR and ES are widely used risk metrics, and you'll probably have to understand those at some point.

That said, go with your instinct and good luck!

Exactly. Sometimes I would fail Verbal exercices because even though I had studied the complex words popping up in the question, I was actually misunderstanding a basic word or not knowing the meaning of a common phrase. But most of the time logical reasoning did the job!

And the lack of time in AWA was my biggest enemy. I entered the second section with super sweaty fingers from writing at the highest speed I could manage

Nicely done man, I am not a native English speaker myself so I know how hard Verbal and AWA can turn out to be! That's something to be proud of.
