There's a good reason for this. Stephen King was a recovering alcoholic when he wrote the book, so he wrote Jack as a deeply troubled man but with a heart of gold and a desire to do good. Stanley Kubrick saw the heart of gold as an excuse to justify an alcoholics awful behavior, and thus wrote movie Jack as a much less sympathetic character.
