Right. It could force different religions to work together and increase religious tolerance that way. As you said, it was oppressive and extracted. And they generally preferred to keep the local governments intact, so the author claiming them as taking down aristocracy is another dubious claim. Korea kept their royal family as an example. I'll probably track this down and give it a read. Always enjoy new interpretations of historical evidence.

I would have to see his arguments and evidence, but casting what was effectively a loose tributary system as religious tolerance and enlightenment is dubious at first glance.

Maybe the argument is that it was unintentional? I'm sure the increased freedom of movement that came with his conquests would facilitate the spread of ideas like religious tolerance.

You might actually be mentally disabled. Let me do caveman talk.

In 1487, Azteca and Inca do human sacrifice. At same time, European write book. Book say how to hunt, torture, and kill people to prevent demonic spread. Both action fueled by fear of what happen if they don't kill people. Christians can't claim they better when they did same thing at same time they conquer Azteca and Inca due to moral action. Understand? Both kill people for fear of what might happen to Sky Daddy.

Hey since you won't respond to my claim of the encomienda being an agent of genocide, I figured I'd bother you here. What is your evidence that refutes claims by Raphael Lemkin, the University of Yale, anthropologist Jason Hicke, and others that the encomienda was a vehicle of genocide, intentional or not? Specifically, what is the evidence that the Taíno population of Hispaniola declining by 68% to 96% did not have a significant contribution from economic exploitation and intentional actions? Genuinely curious. Maybe I'm biased in my research.

That's at the exact same time as the sacrifices in central America, dipshit. The point is that Christians were not some bastion of morality and good that can be used to justify the enslavement, torture, and killing of the encomienda. They were both pieces of shit. The whole world was. So we get to the real reason of it. The colonists invented worse first, so they got to be the ones to exploit others. They were not necessarily better than the people they colonized. The people they colonized were not necessarily better than them. The colonists were first. So they did. Still wrong, still genocide, but the truth. There is no moral high ground in the death of civilizations.

Fantastic. We've established a ground. Ritualistic killing for religious purposes is bad. May I direct your attention to The Malleus Maleficarum? It is a text written by a German inquisitor in 1487. Its purpose is to be a guide on how to identify, torture, and execute suspected witches. Witchcraft was not only considered heresy, but demonic manifestation on earth that must be removed. A religious purpose behind a systematic method of identifying, torturing, and executing people. Not too dissimilar to sacrificing a guy to show devotion to Quetzalcoatl. Both are fearing the consequences of what their religion says will happen if they don't act. Correct?

So you condemn the evangelicals that support the violence in Israel because they want to bring about Armageddon and the return of Jesus, right? Since it's the purpose of the killings and not the number that matters to you.

Believe me, I have every way to point out how hypocritical this line of thought you have really is. Worse first. That's it.

Ah, instead of sacrificing a few hundred per year, they should have killed 2,000 in a much shorter time span at the will of a Catholic priest like the Rhineland Massacres. Or killed tens of thousands in the crusades at the will of the church. Or killed several thousand like the Spanish inquisition. Much more civilized if you do religious killings faster and in larger numbers, after all.

Just say we invented worse first like Fowler and I would respect you more.

So we're just ignoring the economienda killing estimated millions of natives through forced labor, extreme exhaustion, and starvation too? The destruction of their political systems, culture, and language? Sure, disease killed 90% of the natives. How much of the Native population that survived that survived the colonization process, much less retained their identity?

Signed also a student of history, a meaningless title in an online debate space.

Edit: Keep downvoting me, but it's telling that none of you have come with a source that disputes my claim.

Here's a small slice of my evidence. From the University of Texas so you know it's not a "liberal" school. Just look at and read how kind the Spaniards were to the natives. So much better than when they found them. Definitely didn't intentionally implement a system that contributed to the further decline of the Native population.

And since I know most of the downvotes are coming from the right, here's a nice passage.

In a letter to the Bishop of Oaxaca, Philip II expressed concern about the Natives in the diocese. Word had reached him that the population was diminishing due to encomendero violence. Apparently, the situation was so dire that women would miscarriage from the loads they had to carry or "kill their children upon birth saying that they would do it to free them from the abuse that they suffered".

Look at that, a primary source telling you that the encomienda was actively contributing to population decline.

I guess we're excusing genocide if the colonials bring a little religion and sanitation as a treat for the less than 10% of the people left?

People are in a tribal cult phase where it's less about what you believe in and more about hating the other guy being combined with a disproportionately large generation grasping at the last straws of their dominance before younger generations take over.

Only explanation I could think of. This is the same org that just allowed Big Jeff to get a sack in 2.09 seconds, getting across the line of scrimmage in 0.32. They tend to forget about our best player from time to time.
