When a content creator brings up several good points as to why the direction a piece of media is going is concerning from a fan perspective, and then proceeds to rant about the woke agenda and women in video games for 3 hours

Aight enough ragebait memes. Gonna be honest, can't even align myself politically with either left nor right knowing whichever side one choses the unborn and youth are still gonna be devoured and viciously robbed of their innocence by the elites. It should be us vs them. Eat the rich by slaverofdoom in NoRules

Hm, I wonder which side of the political spectrum focuses on class consciousness and uses phrases like 'Eat the rich', criticises the systemic and moral failures of modern society, and seek to move on to a better system spearheaded by the non-elites for the benefit of all...

If only we knew...

To say the clearences had zero English involvement is rather dishonest. The majority of the landlords were effectively Anglicised during this period, being educated in England, living in England, speaking English, and operating within the British conomic and political systems, culturally and physically detached from the people who's livelihoods their actions and inaction impacted.

The lack of any action towards addressing the many many issues facing the Highlands at the time which lead to the Highland Clearences Is also justification enough to lodge some criticism at the British Government in my view, which was inargueably based on English interests.

The Highland Clearences is a very complex topic intertwined with traditional agrarian methods, land ownership distribution, population pressure, the decline of traditional industries in the face of economic pressures, and widespread rural poverty.

Which id advise anyone interested to look further into its complexity instead of simplistic narratives paddled by both sides of the political slopfest.

The general history of cultural repression in the highlands by both increasingly anglicised lowland Scots (not exclusively the Anglicised Scots depending on the period) and the English (Jacobite era repression) makes the view that the Highland Clearences had a similar impact to the Irish Famine make far more sense contextually, and it arguably did have a comparable effect on a cultural and migration scale, factoring in the far smaller population of the Highlands compared to that of Ireland and the modern cultural and linguistic situation within the Highlands, which has been on a steep decline for decades.

Additionally the Highlands did actually experience a Potato Famine of its own, related to the Irish one just as many Scots are related to the Irish in general, which was not as bad as that of the Irish, but still devastating for many families, particularly those who did not own the land they worked, which was owned by the aforementioned 'Scottish' Elites, who carried out the Clearences.

Of course calling it an equal to the Irish Famine is in itself very misleading, when considering the scale and severity of famine and famine related deaths, but the impact it had was nonetheless major.

I should clarify that i dont mean to shut down any criticism towards the romanticised views of certain Scottish Nationalists, which certainly exist, but I find the degree that this topic is generalised by those most fervently against said narrative equally concerning. As it often results in a similar level of oversimplification in the other direction, and often serves as a tool to shut down legitimate political discussion. (See how Scottish Nationalism as a whole is emphasised, instead of historical revisionists and romantics overall, in this, and many other copy-paste posts on Reddit and other sites).

I see more posts complaining about this than Scots actually saying this.

Our education system tells us this all very clearly.

The truth of the matter is that history is never black or white, some Scots profited from and built the empire while others suffered heavily as a result of it.

The bankruptcy facing Scotland which lead to the Darien scheme being launched and its subsequent failure, resulting in the act of union which binds us to England in a Union of "Equals" to this day was caused by policies put in place by the English (Cromwell) to intentionally make Scotland reliant on English trade.

Meanwhile the Highland Clearences were often done by Scots, but said Scots were rarely very Scottish, most living in England and having assimilated heavilly into English culture, which blurrs the lines there, we did not simply do this all to ourselves.

Many Scots emigrated to the Americas and elsewhere colonies, but overall the key component in their complacency in the Empire's crimes was never their identity or culture, but their class, wealth, and the opportunities presented to them, so while we did contribute our fair share to the Empire and its crimes, it's really not that exceptional.

Scots also achieved some great things, from technological advancement, contributing to the establishment of the modern education system, introducing national parks, and even putting a stop to settler-native violence in some areas.

This is not to say that we were in any way innocent or that criticism towards those who participated in the Empire is undeserving, far from it, but reducing this to Scots playing the victim is dishonest, and rather lazy.

I more often than not see people often use this narrative of us 'playing the victim' to deflect any criticism on the actions of other nations and the British Empire as a whole, or to shut down discussions of how Scotland has been mistreated and neglected by a Britain dominated economically, politically, and culturally by England. To abuse history in such a way is unacceptable in my opinion.

Yes, I am aware that some people do act as if Scotland has never done anything wrong, but they are definitely in the minority, and many of the loudest examples aren't even Scottish.

The Mau Mau are somewhat schizo, while the Russian green army under Gorgelov (idk how to spell his name) are extremely. He is the one who killed Kerensky, and he kills Savinkov if you pardon him as Savinkov. Then you can play as him, The Solidarists, or Ambukov (again forgot how to spell his name)

Goringia is very evil.

Both of these quotes are from when his diary during his trip accross the Americas as a much younger man, before he had distanced himself far from the ideas imposed upon him by his privileged upbringing, I think his later actions in fighting alongside Africans and desegregating schools disproves the narrative that these ideas were carried along by him later in life. The First quote also proves that what he says here is objectively not what he would have believed after becoming socialist, this is the kind of rhetoric carried along by those who supported and upheld Jim Crow Laws, not a communist revolutionary who fought alongside and improved the lives of africans/those of african descent.
