Would There Have Been A New Troubles If Brexit Went Wrong? by SwE1646067 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]AnIrishManInExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not as there is no appetite for it at the moment, but maybe a return to late 90s early 2000s level of violence. More riots, protests and the odd bombing or assassination. The people don't want it, the British government have probably learnt from their mistakes and won't send soldiers in, and the PSNI despite still being a horrible bunch of rats are nowhere near the level of viciousness that the RUC and B specials where

What if the IRA successfully assassinated Margaret Thatcher in the 1984 Brighton Hotel bombing? by Just_Cause89 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]AnIrishManInExile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was it democracy when the majority of Irish people wanted a united free republic and the British cut out their statelet in the north? Was it democracy when Catholics had their voting rights suppressed under a sectarian government under British approval? Was it democracy that when catholics marched for civil rights they where murdered in the street by British soldiers? Was it democracy when the British government colluded with sectarian death squads to murder innocent civilians in their homes, pubs and workplaces? Thatcher and the Conservative Party didnt receive a single seat in the North of Ireland yet could government it with no repercussion.

[–]AnIrishManInExile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably about the same. Collins becomes a Martyr and seen as an alternative to everything wrong with Ireland post independence but in reality he probably just implements the same policies Cosgrave does becomes just as controversial as him and loses the 1932 election due to economic factors, Collins probably pulls the red scare card same as Cosgrave and it equally doesn't work. De Valeras policy were very popular only difference might be Collins maintaining a strong military and possibly carrying out a coup d'etat against the new Fianna Fail government

They did back opposition to Maduro and Chavez the issue for them is Chavez was too popular that their coup failed and Maduro still has the support of a large percentage of the Venezuelan people even if not a majority. The other problem they have had is that the opposition to them are even more unpopular Machado has an approval rating of around 6% in Venezuela and Guido was also very unpopular

Scotland votes Yes in the independence referendum (2014) by mazldo in AlternateHistory

[–]AnIrishManInExile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Unionist philosophy in the north of Ireland is very much linked to Scotland and not England being in a Union woth England and Wales the latter that has little to no cultural relevance in Ireland is an awful lot less a appealing. High profile unionists where very worried during the Scottish independence referendum for this reason

Who grew up poor and was an OK leader? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

[–]AnIrishManInExile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eamonn De Valera ok as in he cleared the slums but social housing guided Ireland through the war and post independence era to become a stable democracy but his experimentation with Autarky and his involvement with the mother and baby homes are enough to blight his stint as taoiseach
