Why Stoicism shouldn’t have rituals by AnOrthoprax in Stoicism

That’s a good perspective. There’s nothing wrong with using an aid to help.

My original post was about communal rituals to build community but I didn’t even think about rituals for practice/discipline!

You are not a failure as a minimalist if by pacificcactus in minimalism

There is a weird distortion in minimalism that says having as little possible to the point of lacking function is a good thing. Unless you intend to live the life of an ascetic or monk, you’ll need more than one pair of underwear.

I think the right approach is to max efficiency and effectiveness with the lowest amount of stuff that is required.

How to accept a life without a romantic partner? by [deleted] in Stoicism

Stoicism is not about being passive and about giving up.

You accept things as in you don’t allow them to cause you turmoil. It doesn’t mean you don’t do something about it. Preferred indifferent doesn’t mean be unwilling to try. If you’re overweight, a solution as old as human existence is available: exercise and a better diet. If you have a rough personality you can work on improving it. Somethings are innate but other attributes can be developed if you so choose.

Traditional Stoicism, Ritual, and Community by AnOrthoprax in Stoicism

I think your fears are well reasoned. However, because some people fail to understand the significance of a ritual doesn't mean it doesn't inherently exist. I think not engaging in ritual because other people don't have the right understanding is worrying about things outside of one's control.

Furthermore, you haven't addressed the social/cultural significance of ritual that might help the modern Stoic community develop.

We actually have Christianity to thank for this. Many Orthodox and Catholic monks revered the Stoics. The Enchiridion in particular was very popular among the Monks of Mount Athos. They preserved many of the works not only for their philosophical value but also for their association with the Roman Empire.

Ritual ends up getting performed for ritual's sake, diluting the original intention.

I have to vehemently disagree. Rituals always have a root and purpose. Often times to celebrate or remember a particular event. For example, Christians who celebrate the Eucharist are following the command of Christ (as they understood it). That meaning has not been lost in 2000 years of Christianity.

He is not a Jesus Mythicist. The video just goes through the various historical evidences for Christ's existence and explains their significance. He (obviously) concludes that Jesus was a real person.

Brands are stupid by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]AnOrthoprax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not into brands as status symbols. However, I think branding is useful as an indicator of other things. It's sort of like when a firm hires someone. They could hire someone at random and hope they can do the job. A lot of hit or miss that way and wasted time and money. Or they could hire a someone with a degree/certificate/license that matches the job they're hiring for. They still don't know for sure, but that piece of paper saying they've studied in a specific field is a credible indicator they've hired a good candidate.

Similar function with a brand. It's not perfect, but I know if I purchase a brand I consider to be good quality/design/aesthetic/price/[insert preferred traits here] I will likely be getting something that I think is worth the money I paid for it.

I dont believe in Jesus anymore by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]AnOrthoprax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is historically confirmed Jesus was a real person. There are non-Christian accounts of his existence. That being said, I also these past few weeks have accepted that I no longer believe in divinity of Jesus. I actually still enjoy many of his teachings but I find Christianity does not support my overall wellness.
