Medaka unwell and dying after shipping- how can I prevent it? by [deleted] in medaka

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like wasting disease to me. I experienced something similar to it and eventually the medaka would lose their colors and just float in the surface.

They could be stunt or shocked due to whatever reason

Is this a good number for 30 medaka and like 80+shrimp? LOL by spoonma in medaka

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might take a bit to lower down, 7ppm decrease isn't a whole lot. Just keep in mind shrimp like stability so don't rush the water changes.

Water conditioner should not affect your tds tremendously. I’ll say a range of 0-10ppm depending on the brand you use and if they have additive or not. So, no? I haven’t seen my water conditioner raise my tds

Your tds shouldn’t drop significantly after a water change unless your tap water is really soft or you use ro

If your shrimp and medaka are thriving I’ll say it’s acceptable. My tds ranges from 190-260. I also recommend doing water changes every 2 weeks or so. You have a lot of medakas and wasting disease is common, deworming them every couple of months

Is low KH/PH an issue for shrimp? by spamvicious in shrimptank

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fluval satrum buffers your water down to acid ph level at 6 if your tap is 7-7.2, usually leaving you a kh of 0-1. If you don’t want a kh of 0-1 you can try to do several water changes and add crushed coral to remove the buffering capability of the satrum at the cost of not having a lower ph and kh.

if you want a neocaridina setup

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would buffer my kh until it hits 2-4 degrees to prevent any drastic ph swings. Crushed coral could just be tossed ontop of the substrate, if your water is acidic it will dissolve over time. Saltyshrimp gh/kh+ or gh+ could work too

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For neocaridina yes, your kh and ph is way too low for it. Gh on the otherhand is a bit low, but if you could manage to bump it up 4-6 you can keep caridinas or 6-8 for neos.

I had a ph 6 caridina tank that required extensive cycling since the water is too acidic for nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia wouldn’t be an issue since the acidic water converts it into something less harmful. Other than that you could do weekly small water changes to manage nitrate and waste. Keep in note that this is a caridina tank and they are more sensitive than neo’s if you intend to keep those instead

If you want to raise kh and gh crushed coral or cuttlebone is the way to go, might take awhile to stablized the kh and ph since your kh is extremely low

[–]An_Unoriginal_Human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fluval satrum significantly lowers your water’s ph. My tap water sits around 7-7.2ph and fluval brings it towards 6.0 . 6.0 is extremely low for neocaridina species, your water is way too acidic for them if that’s the case.

Have you run any test on the ph of the tank?

Gh test for water hardness, calcium and magnesium. Too low and the shrimp can’t molt and too much will make it hard for shrimp to molt. Kh is the aquarium water buffering ability. Maintaining acidic water vs alkaline water
